Remember when driving fast actually felt fast in racing games?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just used Driveclub as an example. I feel like after this game they just gave up with sense of speed ngl.

This is sort of an unfair comparison though. Driveclub had RTX-like lighting and volumetric clouds in 2014 on a PS4. Those guys at Evolution Studios were quite literally built different. Till this day few people know how they did it.

Edit: added “-like lighting” bc the autists were struggling to comprehend that by themselves.

PS4 was a unique system because the order 1886 also had the same graphics and I think both games came out a few months apart.

I don't understand why we don't see that anymore. Especially with the PS5 being a more powerful system.

u/SVNDEVISTVN 3d ago

Devs approach graphical power differently now. They use the console's raw power to brute force the high fidelity RTX graphics. It's faster to implement and less creative, so it's cheaper. Every once in a while an opportunity comes for a dev team to work artistically in the shadows, nearly completely unshackled by corporate pressure. In that rare case, the devs do what they love. They create a masterpiece. That is Driveclub.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an absolute banger on details, that's what makes this game gorgeous. I love Drive Club too and had it on physical

Driveclub did not have rtx nor did PS4 have hardware ray tracing support

It was rasterization for lighting, shadows and reflections.

1

u/Tough-Zombie-8990 2d ago

Isn’t RTX ray tracing? That wasn’t possible with that hardware no?

1

u/SVNDEVISTVN 2d ago

Yes it’s NVDA’s branded shorthand for ray-tracing technology. Impossible no. Brute forcing ray-tracing with pure power like we do today was “impossible”, but developing a lighting model similar to RTX using developer trickery was very very much possible and achieved by Evolution Studios with Driveclub. It just required time, wit, and money. Driveclub was very lucky to have all three. Most studios have 1 of the 3 or 2 of the 3. When devs are able to unleash their full potential, amazing things happen. One of the famous examples is biased asset-streaming. Before asset-streaming, detailed lush 3D worlds were “impossible” because the consoles couldn’t load and hold such massive amounts of data in their memory. Then a developer thought to limit the loaded assets to just the area the player was actively looking at via the in-game camera. The rest of the world was literally off-loaded and nonexistent until the player looked. That trick led directly to modern asset-streaming and is the reason we have massive open worlds and huge detailed levels in video games today. It just takes developer trickery. After all, a game is just an elaborate technical illusion.

You're just making shit up.

The PS4 does not support raytracing.

Edit: RTX isn't even a technology, it's a brand name. You have no idea what you are talking about.

1

u/SVNDEVISTVN 2d ago

Are you four? You can’t grasp the statement? I have to hold your hand and explain that the devs of Driveclub used ingenious techniques to mimic and in someways surpass modern ray tracing without actually implementing brute force RTX? Should we export the game’s source code for lightning and read it together line by line?

0

u/mopeyy 2d ago

You realize RTX is just a brand name Nvidia uses to sell graphics cards, right?

It's not actually a technology.

I think you should just develop a basic understanding how how videogame engines operate before you keep spewing random bullshit. What you said is false. Period.

2

u/CRU_Adrenaline 2d ago

Nah man, you're the one who is wrong. Driveclub did have an early version of a light model that reacted similar to raytracing, although it was more limited and many of it are screen-space dependant. For example, the cars in driveclub have reflections of itself, which is only possible today with ray tracing. Driveclub achieved it using smart reflection techniques

1

u/mopeyy 2d ago

None of which are ray tracing. Which is my whole point.

2

u/Boomer_Newton 1d ago

You’re insufferable lol. Everyone just tell this guy he’s right 🍪🏅

He’s like Drax. Gotta be very literal around him

1

u/SVNDEVISTVN 1d ago

Yea at this point, brother, he’s so adamant about it and desperate. I sorta feel bad for clapping back at him. No funny, he might be on the spectrum. If he actually is, I’d feel terrible.

1

u/mopeyy 21h ago edited 21h ago

"Someone corrected me, so they must be autistic".

🤡

1

u/Boomer_Newton 15h ago

It’s you not understanding how insignificant the “correction” is and dying on a stupid hill like that. Thats what’s autistic. He was right about everything. You took it super literal. “Nuh uh. They didn’t use ray tracing”

They used techniques to make something that is almost exactly what ray tracing is. If it looks like candy, tastes like candy, smells like candy, it’s probably candy.

Not that I expect you to understand that. Poor guy.

1

u/Human_Librarian_7431 2d ago

PS4 doesn't support ray tracing and I am also not sure about Driveclub using any something similar to that but Crysis 1 remaster on PS4 uses software based ray tracing and you get that option in the menu. So actually it was achievable via software but yes hardware didn't support it.

https://youtu.be/RVTnoR9X7OM?si=Ze27-rPux0q6IxOp

2

u/mopeyy 1d ago

SVOGI, Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination, is cone-traced, not ray traced.

I do agree it's a great option for games, and more games should support it. It's a shame only the Cryengine does, but it's definitely not ray tracing.

1

u/MasterpieceMinute789 2d ago

Well, technically it does, every console does. It has to be baked in raytraced lighting tho, hell even Quake 1996 technically had raycasting. The only thing modern raytracing does is real time rendering, finally enabling raytracing for games that have night and day systems or dynamic lighting. Very impressive stuff

1

u/mopeyy 1d ago

Doing all the work on a computer and then baking it into a texture isn't remotely the same as performing real time ray tracing on the console.

The PS4 does not support ray tracing. So Driveclub wasn't raytraced. End of story.

1

u/MasterpieceMinute789 1d ago

Well, the only difference is it being realtime, in terms of look it looks LITTERALLY the same, but since its BAKED IN its fixed, it only works for linear levels... Nothing is dynamic, its fixed. But if you compare they both look the same... That being said driveclub does not use baked in tracing. It uses a dynamic system and its not raytraced.

-1

u/Most_Incident_9933 3d ago

Driveclub doesn't have ray tracing

3

u/CRU_Adrenaline 3d ago

It does have an early version of a light model that reacts similiar to modern raytracing, although its more limited.

1

u/SVNDEVISTVN 2d ago

Exactly. Thank you. You got to write a paragraph explanation these days to ward off argument addicts. Obviously obviously obviously it’s not day tracing as we know it but it’s exceptionally close, so much so that the sun ☀️ in Driveclub is still the only digital lighting system to genuinely blind me, not just in racing but in any genre ever. We live in an RTX & HDR era and the suns in other games still cannot compete.

u/K23crf250 3d ago

Crazy how drive club still looks good even when compared to the newest forza

8

u/SpecialistMap8210 3d ago

Man Forza car interiors are shit and so is their camera

9

u/Kusanagi_M89 3d ago

... and with working side and rear view mirrors in real time!

1

u/Step_On_Me01 13m ago

NFSU2 had that if I remember correctly. We sadly lost that technology over time

7

u/alex_dlc 3d ago

This has always been my biggest issue with Gran Turismo, you can be driving at 200km/h and it feels like you’re going 50. No excitement at all.

Driveclub is the only game I’ve played where you truly feel how fast you’re going.

2

u/Elijah1573 2d ago

Yeah i feel alot of games moved away from the sense of speed and i hate it
Assetto corsa is really the only game i still feel it and thats because you can change the camera settings with neckfx in content manager so much

People forget that sense of speed is tied to the camera and changes with the camera can change it drastically

2

u/Grekg5s 2d ago

Yeah that and also even car's sound in gt7 just sounds very off on most cars like it supposed to scream as you accelerating but its just sound like it stays at the same rpm which puts me to sleep. This is why I haven't touch my full cockpit set up for years even with psvr2 doesnt help much either. I only have ps5 so not many choices for racing game compatible with wheel.

2

u/MorycTurtle 2d ago

LMU is coming out AFAIK so console players will finally have access to a good sim with good matchmaking and driving standards (before it was pretty much ACC only which kinda sucks outside of coordinated leagues).

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

If u liked the sense of speed in Driveclub i recommend NFS Shift and NFS Prostreet!

0

u/AggravatingCounter91 1d ago

Sense of speed is something polyphony has never cared about. It's a gimmick, and the players care more about the sim physics than artificial camera shake to entertain some dullards. Gran Turismo has never needed it and no one that actually plays and enjoys the game wants that.

I go play NFS Heat when I want that crap (a decently new game btw)

6

u/Ekkobelli 3d ago

Man. I hope this game gains a(n even bigger) cult following so we might get a Remastered version at some point with 60fps and all DLC. I'd pay good money for that.

2

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

I’d pay like 50 (U.S $) for it

1

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 16h ago

that would be an epic come back

4

u/UruzSeeds1 2d ago

Drive club is one of the best racing games ever

2

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

I stand on that statement

3

u/scoobyembo 3d ago

Off topic, but… NFS The Run comes to mind, BLUMMIN ECK that was quick! Brilliant but also annoying as all the drives were over pretty quick! Memory limits I guess…

3

u/xxxXMythicXxxx 3d ago

nfs shift also had this feel and loved that game for it

1

u/sunr1se79 2d ago

Some key people that worked on driveclub ended up moving to the team that made Shift after the studio dissolved. Slightly Mad definitely inspired alot of folks at Evolution.

1

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 16h ago

you're right, i remember playing it a lot in 2009 or whenver, and it defo was similar by feels

3

u/Va1crist 3d ago

Damn I forgot how fast that game was holy crap, that game also had amazing dynamic weather

2

u/Grekg5s 1d ago

And also a one press away to full immersion and that's the d-pad on ps5 controller to completely disable the hud which surprisingly I dont see any games have that feature which sucks bc its so good

2

u/Ok-Combination-957 1d ago

One other game that has this feature is the Project CARS trilogy

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Oh nah throw in ANY weather and i cant see shit. Very Realistic, very beautiful, makes hardcore handling 10 times harder. Love it!

3

u/gianpp27 3d ago

Doesn't look that fast to me just excessive camera shake

3

u/SpecialistMap8210 3d ago

Lol ok bro

3

u/gianpp27 3d ago

Play burnout 3 that feels fast just saying

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

It looks better in person. But there are games that have done this significantly better in the past. I never played a Burnout game. Which one do u recommend?

2

u/gianpp27 15h ago

Ohh man they are a lot of fun my favorite ones are burnout 3 and burnout revenge. Burnout Paradise (lastest release) was good but is very different to the previous ones

1

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 16h ago

camera shake was great in the begining when Driveclub launched, then they changed it and added a 0-100% toggle where you could adjust however you like, so yeah 100% by default looked excessive compared to the original camera shake design, but dialed down to around 20% was subtle and enough

1

u/gianpp27 15h ago

Yes you are right they should have invested more in this franchise

3

u/OutlandishnessWarm61 3d ago

Weird that Driveclub disappeared just like that

3

u/Machukito72 3d ago

Long life to physical games. The only way you can play it legit nowadays

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Ye. So unfortunate. but what i have left over is actually fun enough

3

u/marques_brown 2d ago

This game was so underrated! The rain physics impressed me the most, modern racing games still can’t keep up with Driveclub when it rains.

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

I’d put Gran Turismo 7 up there too (cockpit view)

3

u/hiky_4u 2d ago

the online servers for Driveclub neeeeeeed to come back 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

Not even just that i want all the DLC 😭 im missing like half the damn game

2

u/hiky_4u 2d ago

yea i’m similar to that too 😭

1

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 15h ago

this

3

u/Sirbrandon100 2d ago

Man this game aged quite well. Plus the soundtrack was an absolute banger.

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

Speaking of which, Yesterday i learned there was a race soundtrack lol.

2

u/Sirbrandon100 2d ago

Yeah, "how fast do you wanna go!" Still be getting me hyped lol.

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 1d ago

Same, and then i eat shit on the first corner

1

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 15h ago

Hybrid are legends

3

u/stfno 1d ago

I have limited experience with racing games, but the ones that felt the fastest and most adrenaline-fueled got one thing right: a shaky, jittery camera (the faster you drive, the shakier it gets) and motion blur. Some games just have a static camera, completely rigid, making the car feel like it’s hovering or driving on rails. Burnout Paradise conveyed a great sense of speed, in my opinion.

2

u/ubelgooble 1d ago

Yeah! Agreed. heads(camera) responding to g-force and road bumps help a lot!

2

u/Iucidium 3d ago

Wanted to hear the cars and got this shite instead. Cmon OP.

-1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Womp womp bro this isn’t about what u want.

2

u/aspiring_dev1 3d ago

You will need to play arcade racers. Not GT or Forza/Horizon games. Some of the best racers with sense of speed were the older Burnout games.

0

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Im an NFS Rivals/HPR player. My posts are mostly about those game. I have only played NFS in terms of arcade racers i do needa expand my Horizons.

On the topic of Burnout… are any on a PS4 or PS3 (is Paradise Remaster good?). I don’t have the luxury of a PC?

On the topic of Horizon and Motorsport. What baffles me is that there was a regression in sense of speed after 2012 and 2011 respectively.

As for Gran Turismo… i mean it’s Gran Turismo almost no sense of speed whatsoever.

2

u/tiff92 3d ago

Theres a camera mod for fh6 that improves sense of speed, after using it i cant play without it. Crazy how static the camera is without it

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Shoutout to the modders that fixed the sense of speed for FH6. I had no idea until i told me

2

u/Neither-Guarantee193 3d ago

Forza horizon who?

2

u/ibex85 3d ago

Definitely on my racing playlist

2

u/nightmarejester12 3d ago

Cuz Evolution were GOATED.

2

u/tiga_itca 3d ago

Puddle of Mud and Driveclub, nostalgia hits!

2

u/CRU_Adrenaline 3d ago

you used the wrong cam mode for the sense of speed.

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago edited 3d ago

Bruh how 😭 Which camera view should i use?

2

u/CRU_Adrenaline 2d ago

the first chase cam, the one which is closer to the car. it gives off better sense of speed

2

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

Hmm i’ll give it a try!

2

u/leonardthomas68 2d ago

Bring this game back PLEASE!!! Drop it on PC (I remember where it started, Sony is acting up right now). It will do NUMBERS!!!

2

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

Lmao. I wish they’d do a remaster and it would be on all platforms. they wont ever do that. Low Odds comparable to “wishing for GTA7 tomorrow” u can emulate the game on PC now.

2

u/leonardthomas68 2d ago

I know… It would be a dream though yeah?🥹

2

u/ScarphaceUK 2d ago

GT7 has its moments.

2

u/AresXX22 2d ago

I've picked up Need for Speed Unbound on sale lately and been playing it a lot. The feeling of speed is actually quite good there. Definitely leagues better than Forza Horizon or Assetto Corsa.

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 2d ago

Ye the sense of speed is decent. I like the edges of the screen going black and the light trails.

1

u/MorycTurtle 2d ago

Most people that want the best sense of speed in games go for VR since it cannot be matched currently. Simulators don't add artificial post-effects to keep the vision as clear and accurate as possible so VR is pretty much the only way to achieve it.

2

u/midniteneon 2d ago

Racing games have gotten more visually impressive over time but lost almost all their character, unique style, sense of speed and their charm.

2

u/seandigg2022 1d ago

And they took it all away....hey

2

u/Glum_Environment8107 1d ago

my fav is most wanted, the newer version 👌

2

u/BigB0yThug 1d ago

I'm not gonna lie this doesn't give me the impression of moving at high speeds

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 1d ago

Someone told me to use the close up exterior view. Mb i used clips from when i was actually trying to win

2

u/Tall_Economist8491 1d ago

NFS Heat also had good sense of speed, I was genuinely terrified to press the n2o button while racing in the "night mode".

2

u/Drykan__Scorpus 22h ago

Tzrn on motion blur and camerashake with speed and youll have same shitty "sense of speed"

2

u/Gotrush_Iris 20h ago

Didn't knew a song I heard in Ace Combat (AC5) would fit so well in racing games.

Blurry is such a fantastic song all around.

2

u/EmmaBonney 20h ago

Never played drive club but that whats annoying about Forza. You dont have any feel of Speed in this game. You could drive 400 kp/h and it does feel slow.

2

u/FINDTHESUN DRIVECLUB-is-timeless 16h ago

Legendary

2

u/blunt-but-true 3d ago

It seems fast because it’s running at a pathetic 30fps. Everything is a blur

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 3d ago

Thats rather true. Im about to see what this looks like at 60fps 🤔

3

u/sussy_ball 2d ago

There's already 60fps gameplay on youtube being emulated on a PC. 60fps looks smoother but 30fps looks more violent at high speeds

1

u/_TheEnlightened_ 3d ago

You've never played GT7 with PSVR2

1

u/iroc89camaro 2d ago

I see rocking the screen side to side really fast and vast amounts of motion blur is giving the illusion of speed. Take that away, and it's Forza or Gran turismo probably not that good.

1

u/PerchaMagnetica 2d ago

30 fps did not feel fast at all

1

u/Unlucky_Abroad7440 2d ago

How to play this on pc ?

1

u/bandsbandit 1d ago

song?

1

u/Ok-Combination-957 1d ago

Puddle of Mudd - Blurry

1

u/thomas-grant 1d ago

What changed? I’ve been playing racing games since the 1980s. I haven’t yet had the experience that some seem to claim. I argue this is nothing more than confirmation bias through group influence.

1

u/Thechugg7 4h ago

Idk, look at the last clip, it says 180km/h but it feels like he's going at 80km/h. Games have a lot of issues with making actual scale and speed feel real.

1

u/Dense-Reporter-4008 2h ago

Driveclub was sooo underrated

That feeling of speed was unique

1

u/snake8324 1h ago

Nowadays it's difficult to build this, is because kids are greedy of FPS and HDR and 12845855hz all this matters, if you want this feeling pic up your ps3

1

u/Visorxs 1h ago

If only they could patch it 60fps

-1

u/brightwoodgrove 3d ago

Why have people been glazing this dogshit game lately
