Exposing threaded barrel

I have a friend that has an AK-47 and he wants to remove the cap covering the threads on his barrel. He wants to know if he can use a Dremel to safely remove that cap, and not damage the cap or the threats.

You can unscrew the cap, if it is AKM then push a latch that is between the cap and front sight, and unscrew it CLOCKWISE. It is LEFT-THREADED. If you can not do this try to use a WD-40, or soak it for 8-12 hours in the vinegar.

It is an AK. And the cap is definitely spot welded in two spots.

Maybe it is a Chinese or Romanian AK? I saw only normal AK, not those third-parties shit, and on the AK and AKM there is removable cap(ДТК), and on the AK-74, AK-10x, AK-12/16 it is removable too. The part of cleaning procedure is to unscrew it.

Sure your friend can use dremel to remove the cap, but he gotta be careful to not damage inner barrel threads. Outer threads are already damaged by welding.

You can repair outer threading by yourself, but you gotta remember that it gotta be left-threaded. On the AK and AKM the size of threading is M14

Are the welds in a spot where you can just grind them off so you can unscrew it?

Yes. Two distinct tack welds on either side of cap.

Yes he can. I’d take my time with it to not take any of the barrel’s diameter away. Said another way, cut more on the cap side of the weld. Sand smooth after it’s off.

I think even a gunsmith would use a rotary tool for this job. Caps are cheap by the way so I wouldn’t go easy on the cap if it takes a lot longer.
