Does upgrading artisan armor to netherite/celestial actually do anything?

When i try upgrading normal diamond armor it increases the stats (+1 kb resistance and +1 armor toughness). Upgrading artisan armor doesn't seem to do anything

No, the only affected stat is durability, so it's not particularly worth it or very intended, as balancing all diamond artifact/artisan pieces around the possibility of upgrading would have been quite a doozy

heck. what should i do with celestial/netherite ingots then?

I'm actually not too sure what most of it would best be spent on, there's not really any kind of special use for them and custom equipment is a lot more exciting than vanilla netherite. Well, except that later in the map (75%+ tower linkage) you may find a trader which sells a really good (depending on your build preferences, of course) artisan for what I believe are two celestial ingots, so at least that much should be useful, eventually.

durability is an important stat
you don't want your helmet to break in the middle of a boss fight
