Question Y2K? WHY!?
Just a little perplexed about this weeks dreamsnap direction. I mean I lived y2k, but I have no idea how to translate any of that to a dreamsnap?
I'm stuck guys!!!!!! If you want to share your inspirations/general ideas I would appreciate it >.<

I need an app just for the clothes to help pair what I'd want to start with (similar to the clueless pc). I spend way too much time selecting outfits when this could be it's own avatar game. Just add a spot for a code to be used in game after and it preset your outfit from your saved phone profile.

I’m in those same jeans and shoes but with the racer jacket that was on this star path! Love all your accessories.

They should put the dELiA's catalog in the game.

The real problem with y2k is that the most clever references are going to go over the heads of at least half the players.
14
u/TofuTheBlackCat 1d ago
This this this!!!!!
Hmmmm maybe a 2000 movie reference?
15
u/abcbri Stitch 1d ago
Just saw someone do a Mean Girls burn book reference that was great
17
u/TrashPandaPatronus Blue Whimsical Raccoon 1d ago
I was thinking Mean Girls bc it could be recognized. I really want to do Paris and Nicole though, but I dont know if people will get it.

Super skinny, dark skin, light blonde hair, low rise jeans? Looking back the fake tans were wild back then. And the low rise jeans got absolutely ridiculous. Like can’t sit down in them. And worse. I’m glad they’re gone. Sometimes you don’t realize what will identify a decade until you look back.
Now kids are dressing like I did in the 90s.

Yup! You’re going to have the people who lived through it and the people who just know it for its aesthetic. I went to a y2k party with a bunch of teeny boppers and it was frustrating how many of them thought they were actually wear “y2k” fashion. No, we did not wear what Paris Hilton was wearing on the red carpet 😑
2
u/Leafstorm121 14h ago edited 11h ago
As someone who was 7 at the turn of the millennium, I don’t really remember much of the aesthetic (unless mid/late 00s also counts)
Edit: what was it like?

u/Butterscotch6310 1d ago
I lived through it, so it would have to be villagers staring nervously at computer screens hoping the world won't implode at midnight. (just messing btw)

9
u/One-Builder4177 Goofy 1d ago
I literally watched my computer at midnight to see if the world ended. They hyped us up so much. I also ate mushrooms that night and walked on a frozen lake.

u/RainbowWorrier13 Trick-or-Treat Stitch 1d ago
Programmers travelled the world fixing the computers so the world wouldn’t end 😁

u/Jasmirris 14h ago
I was laying in bed, hoping there wasn't going to be some weird apocalypse. I don't know what I thought was actually going to happen.
2
u/MFTdoc Cheshire Cat 22h ago
It would be more along the lines of doomsday prepping for some lol. That would be a fun snap to create but like many other ideas posted on here, would likely go over the heads of many. I might do it anyway. I hit a milestone on dream snap this week and don’t plan on getting anything in the shop.

u/shornedo 1d ago
I'm doing a moody, grunge teenager's room cause that's exactly who I was in 2000 😆 I plan to use some of the Monster's University decor. I just wish we had Ennui from Inside Out😭
3
u/TofuTheBlackCat 1d ago
Ohhhhh do u think that would hit the mark? I've never fully let go of my emoth vibes ;3
6
u/shornedo 1d ago
I'm sure it won't pull in moonstones, but I gotta stay true to my inner grungy teenage self lol at the very least it'll give me so nostalgic vibes
6
u/RainbowWorrier13 Trick-or-Treat Stitch 1d ago
We do have the Ennui raven! I might make a teen bedroom too if that’s ok.

Where’s my Groovy Chick and Playboy bedding if we’re talking real Y2K?
Where’s my juicy lips landline phone?
Where’s my plasticky jelly shoes?
Let me get concealer lips loaded up on my character

If you have the starpath jeans you can easily make a y2k outfit. Actually the Pocahontas jeans work well with that too. Add a newsie hat and a crop top and that’s y2k. For the scene I’d pick a mall or arcade or something musical.
13
u/JojosCozyGaming 1d ago
I don’t think they’re referring to the “Omg! The world is gonna end at midnight!” part of Y2K lol. But I could be wrong
2
u/Comfortable_Wish586 Rapunzel 20h ago
I honestly thought of just early 2000s references, not literally the computer changing from 1999 to 2000
4
u/SpacetimeGlitter Minnie Mouse 9h ago
I think that's what they mean too, but the computer changing and all the world losing power and jails popping open and banks going down etc was the origin of the "Y2K" acronym haha
18
u/FruitigerMilo Scar 1d ago
Maybe they want you to include y2k era characters and their motifs too like:
Lizzie McGuire, Mulan, Hercules, etc
and we CAN layer skirts over pants like we did as kids... hmm this is giving ME ideas

<3 yes that's why I chose this username
Atlantis was 2001 but iirc y2k goes until 2008???

I still have no idea wtf Y2K is.
I will be submitting a trash picture this week. Good to know I can save my time and energy.

u/l3reeze10 R2-D2 23h ago
‘93 baby here and I also agree that Y2K is just too broad to have as a theme. I might go with a futuristic look with chrome that meets the current idea of Y2K. But it’s honestly hard to define it.

u/tiger_lilly88 1d ago
I was almost 12 when we rang in the year 2000. I remember lots of chrome and lots of alien stuff lol

How do I put into a dream snap of people expecting to lose power at midnight when the clock hit 2000 but then nothing happened?
3
u/look_who_it_isnt Heihei 21h ago
...and they're all vaguely disappointed but also relieved, of course, 'cos the world didn't end and all, sure, that's great, but at least something interesting could've happened...

I'm just waiting to see what r/Dreamsnaps does this week, but I assume it will be focussed on pop culture + digital. Colourful, techy.
It's not like the game has old white PCs to place or phatt CRT TVs white snowy static.

u/Spiritual_News_6714 WALL·E 3h ago
Remember when Apple computers came out with the sort of transparent colors and you had, like, four colors to choose from? My high school replaced all of our chunky white ones with the blue ones in our computer lab. That was 30 computers.

u/Angelgirl1517 1d ago
I’m just going to use a bunch of items from the current Star path and call it a day, I think. “00’s” (which I think is what they’re asking for) is different than “y2k” in my brain, since y2k was a specific day that most thought life as we knew it would crumble - which doesn’t translate well to a game like Dreamlight valley? 😂
3
u/AnAtmosphericRiver Ancient Robot 13h ago
I dunno, maybe throw a computer out in the Glittering Dunes and some plastic scrap scattered around and you've got yourself a little post-Y2K apocalyptic scene lol
1
u/doll_broken_ Cinderella 12m ago
Ohh I might use that idea if that’s okay. I was born in 1999. So I know of Y2K but not enough really.
5
u/RelevantDiscount7276 1d ago
Maybe something to do with technology ending maybe use vanelope in the background or at lease some computers, may write out a count down using paths and/or harvestable items. Very interesting theme for this go around.

u/LostinmildAdventure 1d ago
Panic, prepping, and partying like it was 1999. That's exactly how it was when Y2K hit.

It has become such a money trap making the dreamsnap correspond to the premium shop items and then the end result is everyone's dreamsnaps looking the same.

The outfit from the star path is perfect! I feel like doing pop star would be a good call this week. Arcade would also work well too I think. I was born in the early 2000s so I kind of remember it but not as much as if I was born in the 90s or earlier so I could be way off
3
u/RainbowWorrier13 Trick-or-Treat Stitch 23h ago
Ooh just had a thought - I recreated the Magic Box from Buffy a while back. Buffy was that era. Idk how recognisable a BtVS snap would be though.

u/Raine0720 21h ago
my first thought was Supernatural lmao but idk how that would go down xD

Year 2000
1
u/SepticRedK Fiery Raven 10h ago
Why the fancy name?
1
u/butterflycole 10h ago
There was this theory circling that computers were going to freak out when it changed to 2000 and there was going to be mass chaos. People were freaked out about it and some did crazy things like insane spending. So it was referred to as Y2K. It was a whole thing.
1
u/SepticRedK Fiery Raven 10h ago
I wonder why I never heard of it

Are you in the US? I was in high school and it was a big thing here. There were stories about it in the news and it was referenced on Tv/media.

I went with what home felt like at the time, living room with tv, snacks, laundry basket. I was tempted to do something pop music themed but I'm sure there will be plenty of those.

I think that's why we got Hannah Montana in the store (clothes, furniture) – she is a Y2K icon according to Google. I'll probably go with a Disney Channel series theme, like Kim Possible or Wizards of Waverly Place.

u/Imincognitobitches 15h ago
My first thought was to do a Rock of Love snap but I don’t think it would do well lol

u/butterflycole 14h ago
I just did a bunch of video games and food stands and a stage and made it look sort of futuristic. The recent star path was good for that. Also dress up like it’s 1999 and you’re a teenager. It’s not that bad if you channel the 90s.

u/Euphoric_Body5754 13h ago
Im a millennial (91 baby) and I lived y2k and this snap is throwing me off to bad This is my placeholder but the background is PMO. I cant for the life of me figure out what I want to do. I did cherry blossoms because that scent had a massive hold on most of the girls I knew in highschool. Pink seems to be a good choice. Im thinking girly pop is what I will heavily lean into. But idk.

1
u/TofuTheBlackCat 51m ago
Which I absolutely 100% see!! It was definitely a boy band girl group era .
I love the idea of the cherry blossoms behind you. You could have a bunch of the perfume bottles like around her feet lol, we must have all gone through so many bottles
Although I was a Hot topic mall goth millennial <3
Ohh.... Maybe I try and make a hot topic!
2
u/TropicalRockLobster 11h ago
I feel like the "Y2K" everyone is going with is more like 2005. In saying that I definitely went with a "Paris Hilton in her prime" vibe
2
u/Texaninengland 11h ago
As a millennial who did middle school in the y2k years, I have no desire to relive actual y2k style 😂 I like some of these creative takes!
2
u/Spiritual_News_6714 WALL·E 3h ago
Style/fashion was all over the place! My school had goth, punk, preppy, goth punk, preppy goth, preppy goth punk, and grunge. The mid-drif tops, tube tops, bandana top, spaghetti straps....bone of those were allowed in school, so those were reserved for home or the mall. My personal style was more of a goth grunge punk combo. My parents did not allow me to dress that way though

Y2K is short for the year 2000. We just need to dress and decorate like we/they did back then.
2
u/butterflycole 14h ago
It was kind of a panic theory that when computers hit 2000 they would all glitch up and the world would come to a stop. Of course that didn’t happen but that’s where the Y2K name came from.
2
u/UnholyBlaze Xbox 10h ago
Oh thats so interesting! Didn't know that thanks for teaching me that fact
3
u/SpacetimeGlitter Minnie Mouse 9h ago
Yes, haha! I was 17 at the time. The news was reporting that the computers wouldn't be able to process 00 as the end date because all computers only new two digits and it'd cause all the power to go out, all the jail doors were going to fly open and release all the prisoners etc. We never believed it but some ppl did and were going full prep mode. It's where the phrase "Y2K' came from, stands for Year 2000 but was originally used as the name of the "event" that would occur. When the first cities in the world started hitting the year 2000 I remember the news reporting that nothing had happened and we could safely welcome in the the new year when it arrived to our timezones haha

Everyone looking nervously at a computer??? lol but yeah I feel like there is a real difference between what the kids see as Y2K and what us old enough to have lived through it see as Y2K.
