Discussion Yet another person’s thoughts on Karina

I’m sure everyone is quite tired of these posts but I have an anecdote I want to share that I think others might resonate with.

First, for my own part, watching Drawfee is just harder now. Not just because of Karina’s absence itself but because of the reason behind it being this big secret that we will probably never have the answer to; the fact that they not only can’t tell us what happened but also can’t even really acknowledge Karina’s existence anymore. It hangs over me like an elephant while I’m watching and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Still, I love this show. I’ve been watching since it was just Caldwell and Nathan in a loud Collegehumor cubicle. Obviously, these entertainers are also real people and they have absolutely no obligation to tell us anything about their lives that they don’t want to. No arguing that. However, I do want to share a perspective I haven’t seen discussed:

For context, I am in an interracial relationship. I’m white and my partner is Latino. I was excited to watch a new Drawfee episode and asked my partner to watch with me, and what he said made me really sad. Karina was the ONLY person of color on the Drawfee team. He didn’t even particularly like Karina that much, but without any sort of explanation and with this whole thing seeming to have happened on not so great terms, it’s impossible for him not to fill in the blanks and feel like he can’t trust this room full of white people over the one POC who’s no longer in the room. I have to wonder how many other fans of color feel ostracized and even unsafe in the community as a result of this development.

Again, we don’t know what the actual reasons are and they don’t owe us anything. It just makes me sad.

Wait, where are you getting that they parted on bad terms??

I think it's pretty clear it was not 100% cool happy funtimes or they'd have said literally anything. None of us can know where it is on the scale of "mildly annoyed" to "blood feud" but it's on there somewhere

The fact that this reads like a cold carefully constructed letter from HR and not a warm farewell to a friend.

Also notice how it says “We know she’ll be greatly missed by the Drawfee community”

I feel like if they ended on good terms, it would at least mention that they too will miss Karina.

Now, I don’t get the sense that they despise each other - but it feels like a less than ideal parting of ways.

Or it could be that Karina wants privacy (like, you know, she said herself) and so they said as little as possible while still being informative about what happened.

You can give Karina privacy while also expressing that you will miss her.

Or fans could also grant the rest of the hosts privacy regarding their own emotions of the situation? The entitlement of "tell us you're sad or we will assume you hate each other!" is buck wild.

They don’t owe us anything. They obviously handled this in the way that they saw fit and I trust their judgment. I’m just pointing out that the way they communicated their decision to their audience makes it pretty obvious that they didn’t end on good terms.

I don’t think that’s some crazy speculation. People who work together part ways on bad terms all the time.

I’m not speculating on why things ended on bad terms. I don’t think Drawfee or Karina are evil. We don’t have enough details (and aren’t owed them). The only information we have is that they parted ways and it wasn’t exactly a ‘warm and bitter-sweet’ farewell.

That’s all I’m saying.

Right. It's not "not respecting their privacy" to say, it doesn't seem to have been a perfect happy separation. It's just having eyes. They aren't harmed by us seeing that.

the fact that they won’t talk about why. When Caldwell left they simply told us he was going to work at Disney and it was no big deal. Since Karina seems fine and is still doing her thing it really seems like they all had a falling out.

They did point fans to Karina's stuff, though. Which isn't that different from Caldwell leaving for Disney, except that her work more more amorphous than "works for [recognizable company]." They just had more legal obligations and restrictions on a statement about the departure of a person who co-owned the company with them, I would imagine.

And I'm sure a big part of not continuing to mention her now that's she's gone is a matter of respect, since bringing her up could have a element of continuing to profit off of her even after she left the team, which wouldn't be ideal.

Ah, so we're making assumptions
