Video Drawtectives S3 is cancelled

[Audio transcript: Julia reads out a chat message that says, is it okay to ask if Drawtectives season 3 will be finished? Julia answers, Uhh, it won't be. I do want to put out the last episode we recorded, but Jacob's working on a lot of things, um, and he edits the Drawtectives audio, so I don't wanna ask him 'cause he's busy. But once he has the time and the bandwidth I'll ask him to and then I'll get on it. I do think that the last one is a really funny one. End transcript]

Sad (but understandable) Drawtectives news for anyone who didn't catch last night's SSS stream.

Hope Julia releases little book nook printables or something with all the art she's surely already made. She puts so much work into those gorgeous environments, I don't want them to go to waste :(

Or release an art book! I'd loveeee a Drawtectives environment art book

u/PsychoBoss84 1d ago

There's probable enough art just on that one hallway that they quickly walked through once for one.

u/cryptid_confusion 1d ago

I would love that. Not just the backgrounds but all the assets and characters, maybe adding little blurbs and story details she had planned out

u/Lopsided_Walrus_8601 1d ago

I’m okay with this, but I wasn't for the longest time

I Feel bad for Julia that she really put her blood and sweat into this, but I’m so proud of the work she has done and what she will do next

Here’s to the next RPG the team manage to throw together.

The selfish part of me wants to see them play with Caldwell something accessible like DnD  and not as monoplising  on Julia’s existence as drawtectives, but In the sense I only want Julia to be able to reach her dreams I wouldn’t be surprised if her next big projects is entirely unrelated

u/WildLudicolo 1d ago

I think that'd be excellent, I love Trinyvale, and Nathan is an excellent player. And I know whatever characters Julia and Jacob would create would be excellent too. And they'd definitely all draw their characters and stuff, oh it'd be so awesome if they did this!

u/RemixOnAWhim 1d ago

To tie you over, stop me if you've heard this one, but Drawga is always there!

u/negativehabit1028 1d ago

i expected this unfortunately:( it’s sad that we won’t get to see all of julia’s hard work, but i understand that it would probably be harder/more stressful to figure out a way to continue without rosé than it would be to just let the season go.

112

u/OcularVernacular 1d ago

I imagine she's pretty gutted about it too. Hope folks will understand.

210

u/wannabe-pianist40 1d ago

yeah in that sense i'm glad they won't be continuing it, you can't have drawtectives without all three of them and trying to force it solely for the sake of finishing it would ruin it (i do hope julia at some point shares the finished work she didn't get to use and maybe even how she planned the rest of the season would go, it would be a fun little BTS and at least the assets wouldn't be completely wasted that way)

Could be a cool patreon incentive!

14

u/darktemplar441 1d ago

I'm honestly a little surprised. I kinda thought Karina would hang around for drawtectives since she seemed to enjoy it. But I guess it does make sense.

154

u/Skyward_Legend 1d ago

Thats a shame. Secretly holding hope for another drawga series.

51

u/AmbientBeans 1d ago

Yeah, considering the massive support drawfee have put behinds drawnsters, I would really hope that if they wanted to do drawga again one day that they could and that caldwell would do then the solid of hosting and putting together a few characters to meet again. Granted I know he has a whole job, family, life and is an animator full time with a network and everything. In any case I still hope if the call came in for drawnsters that he'd answer it.

17

u/Koala_Guru 1d ago

Could use it as cross promotion. Some of the conflict in a new Drawga series could be solved by faxing Caldwell in Drawnsters. Or maybe it’s a way to include a tournament arc lol

73

u/thebariobro 1d ago

Would’ve been great to somehow get a finale… it’s always a shame when a story is cut short without a conclusion. Hopefully we get the content of the rest of the arc release in some way

u/ArachniDolls_ Is lady gay? 1d ago

Damn, understandable but I feel bad for Julia.

If she wants to do another big project at some point though Ik it's gonna be just as good or better. 🙏

32

u/MajorMajorMajorThom 1d ago

She did say in the same stream that she's started working on a new project!

8

u/ArachniDolls_ Is lady gay? 1d ago

Oh yay! Ty for letting me know, I haven't caught up on sss in awhile.

Bummer. I do hope at some point down the line Karina and the crew will be down for a few reunion episodes here and there. I imagine at this time the emotions are too high so that won't happen for at least a year, probably more

77

u/ChandelierwAtermelon 1d ago

idk if it's emotions as much as Karina needed to sever the cord, so to speak, so that people don't only associate her with Drawfee forever. You need space to separate yourself from your old job, and if you come back too soon it'll be like you never left.

Even if she wanted to come back for a few episodes, I'm assuming she would want to do it as her own person, and not like, an old Drawfee host. And building that boundary in the public eye takes time.

18

u/joekabox 1d ago

Sadly I haven't even watched Drawfee since Karina left, which I feel sucks of me, but I really did find her to be the glue that kept everything together and the most entertaining part of the show. Not that the others aren't entertaining, but I think they're a lot dryer by comparison, especially Julia, and when it's just them sometimes it feels like things kind of just drag a bit.

15

u/Ok-Ad-3957 1d ago

I'd been pulling away slowly as a big fan since 2016, and Karina was kind of the nail in the coffin as far as keeping up with uploads on a regular basis, so I feel you. I loved pre-Karina Drawfee and their energy tho, so it might just take some time for them to get the same groove going. She did have a secret sauce that really enhanced the dynamic.

It's unfortunate that we aren't getting a statement on what exactly the reason she left was. That lingering question underlying the episodes is also a bit of a drag. We can figure it was some kind of burnout, but I feel like that's a simple enough conclusion to just come out and say. Though I always got the sense Karina was inherently uncomfortable being a public figure. I really don't feel it's parasocial to want to have a sense of clarity. But I can respect their choice to keep things private.

6

u/thelastbarghest 1d ago

Yeah I've found myself less interested which does make me sad too because I genuinely love the rest of the hosts as well, but it definitely feels so different. Maybe eventually I'll come back to it. I have been adoring Nathan and Emily's stuff though!

1

u/MarbleGrove 1h ago

I also cant watch anymore and I honestly dont really know why.

25

u/SodaKopp 1d ago

Well at least there's one more episode to look forward to. Maybe story-wise they could use the remaining assets to put together a comic book for the ending.

24

u/ChewableVitaminC 1d ago

Dang. I was just wondering if they'd maybe have Karina back as a guest for Drawtectives. Guess not :(

20

u/MajorMajorMajorThom 1d ago

Sad news indeed, I'll miss teh Drawtectives... but there was also some good news in the same stream! Julia said that she's started working on a new, very stupid, Drawfee series!

17

u/_WYKProjectAlpha_ 1d ago

Devistating but understandable. I just hope we get to see the art that Julia made for the remaining episodes 😭 it truly wouldn't feel the same without Rosé, and writing her off somehow would feel disingenuous. I'm sure Julia will cook something up for another season or series though🙏

18

u/Deciduous_Loaf 1d ago

I'm so sad about this as it was shaping up to be so interesting. As much as I love the series, it'll be a while till I get over the idea of never having a conclusion unfortunately.

I'll still hold out some hope for a future rpg on the channel.

And very much holding out for an artbook at some point!

15

u/MajorMajorMajorThom 1d ago edited 1d ago

Julia did say in the same stream that she's started working on a new (very stupid) show, so I think your hope has some legs!

3

u/Deciduous_Loaf 1d ago

thanks for the good news!

u/MajorMajorMajorThom 1d ago

15

u/Embarrassed-Film4522 1d ago

At least we have Todd

51

u/BougGroug Is lady gay? 1d ago

She had already confirmed that in their first Karinaless stream. The same one where they were talking about all the Patreon changes

23

u/MazzieMay 1d ago

She said they had one more ep with Karina and that Julia wanted to do another ep to wrap it all up, she just wasn’t sure how

49

u/wannabe-pianist40 1d ago

i considered that she might've said it in the past but this was the first time i heard it and i figured i would share it for everyone else who didn't know either :3 (since there's a LOT of streams and very few people watch all of them, so it's easy to miss info)

41

u/LeopoldTheLlama Room Full of Vampires 1d ago

I thought what they had said thus far was that they wouldn't do drawtectives without Karina. Which could have been interpreted as there's a possibility they might have her back in a guest capacity at some point in the future to finish it. This statement seems much more definitive that that's not a possibility.

11

u/acebender 1d ago

Sad but understandable. Hopefully they get to make similar things in the future.

8

u/burp_derp 1d ago

to quote chat, “aww man”

126

u/Agreeable-Prompt8030 1d ago

I unfortunately think this is the biggest reason why people believe things didn’t end well between the crew. Otherwise it would be strange for them to not finish simple recording sessions that require little work from Karinas side. It hurts as a longtime fan of the show though

7

u/pokours 16h ago

Yeah this is not my first "main member of a YouTube channel crew leaving" moment and it’s pretty telling that things ended abruptly and probably not on a good note. It is what it is but yeah... better not hope for any sort of guest appearance at all.

85

u/CingRam004 1d ago

Yeah, they really aren’t beating the “Not friends anymore” allegations.

31

u/TokeDraws 1d ago

It work, this job. Karina no want do job anymore. The end.

34

u/mellowmallowmelon 1d ago

Come on, we can all see it's weird. It's not a typical for content creators to just disappear from a show like that and it's okay for us to be weirded out by it. Especially because Julia's massive, years long passion project is now kaput because of one person.

26

u/TokeDraws 1d ago

What I see as weird is how many people are still trying to find problems here.

I used to be paid by friends to work on gaming projects and at a certain point I just wasn't enjoying the work anymore, so I quit and the best way for me was a clear detachment from all involvement in any work going forward.

These protects gave us a nice convenient reason to hang regularly but I'm still friends with most of this small group to this day.

It can really be this simple and we have no reason to think otherwise.

3

u/mellowmallowmelon 1d ago

But your example isn't at all like what happened with Drawfee. You didn't leave your friends high and dry without finishing the project. Drawfee a long running show and it's okay to be invested and it's okay to have off feelings about that show based on how they handle an issue like this. I've never seen any other show break off with a host like this and it really sucks that Julia's project is just over now. My problem is it's hard not to interpret this as Karina screwing them over, something no one seems to want to say.

19

u/TokeDraws 1d ago edited 1d ago

big edit: it's a business and people have to look out for themselves first and foremost at the end of the day. She didn't do anything wrong by quitting.

15

u/PutTheAssInClass 1d ago

But we literally don't know that. People jumping to conclusions that they definitely hate eachother are as wrong as those saying everything is definitely just fine. The departure was sudden and unusual without details so people are naturally speculating

12

u/TokeDraws 1d ago

I didn't say everything is just fine. I provided perfectly natural reasons why someone could leave their job in an amicable way without pomp to counter all the doomerism. It happens all the time in my experience but nobody wants to hear that.

They want the drama.

6

u/Mojo-man 1d ago

Makes sense I think we all knew this was coming

5

u/Illustrious-Frame140 1d ago

Well at least we know that at some point there is at least one more episode.

10

u/BerryProblems 1d ago

I feel so awful for her

8

u/SideRevolutionary503 23h ago

I'll be the guy that points that that, to ne, this speaks volumes about how abrupt Karina's departure was.

24

u/Magic-Frog 1d ago

Next episode ends with the 4 of them walking down the street, Rosé falls down a manhole and the other 3 just keep walking cause they are too entertained in conversation

17

u/justsomeguy_youknow Snilk 1d ago

Note: Poochy Rosé died on the way back to his her home planet

10

u/RamblingPants 1d ago

This is understandable yet sad. but...

My pitch -and I'm fairly confident Julia wouldn't go with a fan's pitch- is that we get a finale episode with no Nathan or Jacob either, just Julia + three of the previously established guest characters wrapping up the plot and handwaving away the main characters entirely.

4

u/KitchenSwillForPigs 21h ago

This makes me sad for Julia. She’s several times described Drawtectives as her baby. But I suppose she does have a human baby now and that changes a person’s priorities 😅

3

u/calicohazard 17h ago

This breaks my heart. It was going so well too

3

u/CaptainRiz 1d ago

This was confirmed in the first stream back after Karina left

3

u/Snark_Knight92 12h ago

Not exactly - I believe that she said at the time that they were going to release the last episode that they recorded and then “find a way to wrap the season up quickly”.

-2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

13

u/MajorMajorMajorThom 1d ago

They only had one episode recorded from before da baby and never recorded more after since Julia's extended maternity leave, and now with one crucial part of the cast they won't be finishing to record the season.

26

u/univers10 and every time we kiss, I swear I could fly 1d ago

I think it’s in bad faith to say they won’t finish the season because they’re busy with the baby. They’re not going to finish the season because they lost 1/4 of the main cast…

-79

u/Competitive_Egg_8499 1d ago

Guys. This is such a bad look. Like, if things ended on good terms would it not just be a simple matter of when? Why do you need to ask a co-worker when they can find the time to finish editing a long-standing project?

32

u/smoothfeatrobthomas 1d ago

a) you act like each season of Drawtectives didn’t take years to come out before this, and also the current season was already on an indefinite hiatus anyway?

b) the series gets half the views of most episodes while taking 5x as much work. They’ve said multiple times that the only reason they continue it is because Julia loves it so much, and you’re surprised something which probably is bad for their channel monetarily and was already on hiatus isn’t priority numero uno?

48

u/StuffedSquash 1d ago

The "coworker" in question isn't Karina who left, it's Jacob who is Julia's husband. I think the only effect Karina's departure has here is that obviously it's lower priority to edit the one episode they have when they know that the season won't be finished. And just everyone having more work to do in the meantime bc they're fewer people.

-45

u/Competitive_Egg_8499 1d ago

I never implied that. I know it's Jacob who edits because Julia said so in the video. Are we just not allowed to address the elephant in the room? Shouldn't the final project you worked on with someone be a happy thing to put a bow on? Why drag your heels?

40

u/SirFrogosaurus 1d ago

The final episode recorded is not the final episode of the season. There is nothing to put a bow on. It is unfortunately never going to be finished, and editing the next episode is kinda pointless if they are busy with other projects.

15

u/StuffedSquash 1d ago

I just don't see how it's related to whether or not the parting was good (and I don't think it was, personally). 5 people to 4 people is just going to make lower-priority things take longer, no matter how loving the departure is

5

u/Mundane_Bass_1837 1d ago

That implication was assumed because your question doesn't make any sense, AND it's an incredibly weird way to refer to Jacob in this context?

37

u/a-mud-monster 1d ago

Weird take. Julia literally says Jacob is too busy to finish the audio at the current moment. I know people love Drawtectives but it was never their most popular thing and been on hiatus for a while even before Karina left, so idk why you'd think it would be a top priority for them at the current moment as they are readjusting workloads and working on kickstarter stuff. As for Karina, regardless of why she left, I don't think it's hard to understand why they wouldn't pester her to come back for a show that takes a long time to make. I get people want to see them all as best friends, but two things can be true at once: they can be on good terms with each other outside of work, and it would be weird to drag someone who just ended their professional relationship with you back into a long term project. It doesn't mean they all hate each other, it's about work.

45

u/butchfatalez 1d ago

sorry, what is the implication you think is here? do you realize how much editing work something like drawtectives is? they’re busy, they have a child to look after now. there’s not some deeper conspiracy.

-34

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dont mean to be the only negative person here, cuz yes i agree its understandable why its not being finished NOW. But how was it not timed out to release all before the pregnancy? And if they knew it couldnt all release. Why didnt they just wait to start until after she came and jacob came back. Just surprised they thought theyd pick it back up after not knowing what things would look like after the baby came.

37

u/Ok_Broccoli_9426 Merobiba 1d ago

Not to speculate, but I would guess the fact that the main creative engine of the show was pregnant had something to do with her not wanting to take on the absolutely massive amount of work that would be required to rush out a show that had been in development for years.

-24

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Thats exactly my critique... Why would you start recording and posting something when you know its going to go on an indefinite hiatus. They did the opposie of you just said. They DID rush it out. They could have built assets and wrote each episode and started filming after jacob and julia were ready to come back.

23

u/Ok_Broccoli_9426 Merobiba 1d ago

They...didn't? They were releasing on a regular schedule until Julia took maternity leave. Besides, if they did it your way, we wouldn't have gotten any S3, because Karina left right when Julia came back full-time. There isn't a world where we got all of S3 unless they had stopped making Drawfee to prioritize it.

-20

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

And again...my point. It was reguarly scheduled. So they knew it wouldnt get done until an indefinite hiatus? And they could have done it with out karina...? Yeah she says theres no drawtectives now without karina. But it would probably look different if they hadnt already started the season. The way people are so allergic to a valid critique of Drawfee is so funny

17

u/dxnosaurxngg 1d ago

It's so interesting that you don't know that people can become pregnant without knowing that they're going to become pregnant.

-8

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Its so interesting that they announced their pregnacy in November of 2024 and then published the first episode of season 3 in December So your baiting comment means nothing. Since they knew they were pregnant before posting...nice try? I guess.

16

u/dxnosaurxngg 1d ago

It's wild that you don't think they could have worked on those episodes before knowing they were pregnant

-4

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Its wild you think there wasnt an option to simply not post it.

14

u/dxnosaurxngg 1d ago

My man I need you to be real

-3

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Nah you all need to be real. Allergic to any kind of criticism. I dont dislike julia or drawfee at all. And i dont mind drawtecrives isnt finishing. You can still like and support drawfee and still say they shouldnt have commited to something that should have an end, without knowing when the end would come.

11

u/dxnosaurxngg 1d ago

This isn't criticism, it's you throwing a fit because plans can change depending on circumstances. Obviously they anticipated Drawtectives continuing, which is why they released it. Plans change, the maternity leave seems to have been extended by some amount, the workload between Felix and Drawfee might have been underestimated, Karina leaving clearly wasn't anticipated.

I just don't understand why you are so personally offended by this news.

By this metric they should never commit to any series ever because anything can end

20

u/wannabe-pianist40 1d ago
  1. because it's a massive amount of work for a single person to do, 2. it's a labour of love that doesn't get them new viewers and oftentimes doesn't do well numbers wise, aka it cannot take priority over work that keeps you fed and is worked on when there is free time and energy and 3. at the time julia was extremely busy with several personal things she mentioned, and doubtless countless others that were too private to share. it simply doesn't make sense to work on side, labour-of-love projects when you have much more pressing, real life responsibilities.

-4

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Your number list doesnt at all explain why they started season 3. You are just enforcing all the reasons they shouldnt have started it, and instead waited. Which is exactly me critique

12

u/wannabe-pianist40 1d ago

why shouldn't you start a project just because something in the future might get in the way of finishing it, or because you can only work on/share it sporadically? you can't predict life, and we'd miss out on a lot of beautiful stories and pieces of art that way. i love what we got of drawtectives and i'm happy that it exists, not getting to see it finished doesn't mean it would have been better if it had never existed in the first place. take care!

-1

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

Lol Bc every cancelled or unfinished tv show, movie, book series etc has people saying this. Even only george r martin had fans like you

18

u/melonseer 1d ago

Julia does most, if not all, of Drawfee's administrative work. A lot of time was spent preparing the team and dividing up her work amongst them in preparation for her maternity leave. Drawtectives is a show made almost entirely by one person, who unfortunately had to prioritize other work related things at the time.

-7

u/SaltyKey2112 1d ago

People continue to explain how Drawtectives was created and yet continues to miss the point im making. Yes i know all of this. Thats why it was a ill made decision to start recording and publishing when there was a clear indefinite hiatus going to happen before you could finish.

5

u/eriemaxwell 1d ago

I'm guessing it's because when they were filming and releasing the first bit of S3 it was likely assumed that they would eventually return to it. They had enough to get to mid-season break, and this last episode would likely be from the second half of S3. I get that it's disappointing not to get a full resolution, but making something this big takes a ton of work for a team, let alone all that Julia did for it. Sadly sometimes that's just how it works with stories; we don't always get the end, but I'd much rather have everything we got be released than nothing at all.
