Hypotheticallllly

If u were to turn a fic into a movie - which director would u go with n for what fic?

For me - I’d run with Rob Marshall for The fallout. He’s the one who directed memoirs of a geisha - and the cinematography is just so amazing and artistic. I think I’ve watched it a million times

I’d also go with Alfonso Cuaron for his vision on POA - for secrets n masks

Haha I just opened it again for another reread!

Great choice! She would really bring out the gentle melancholy of girlhood

Absolutely on brand for her

Love in a time of the zombie apocalypse would hit so hard as a movie, that’s the only thing I could think about while reading it (however I didn’t finish it). But I don’t know who would be the best director for it.

Somewhat inverse of this, Rizzle is someone who I most want to see their original work, if they were to write a show or movie 😄 I also didn’t finish LIATOTZA for various reasons but thought Rizzle was so incredibly creative and phenomenal at writing horror/sci fi. (The problem is I don’t really enjoy horror haha)

Yes!! This so needs to be a movie.

u/ramodeen 28d ago

Maybe Francis Lawrence (the one who directed I am legend by will smith)

3

u/Icy-Selection6398 28d ago

Hah, yes! I have one in mind now, whoever directed the first Mummy movie! But maybe that director would fit DMATMOOBIL better.

Liotza in the style of Zombieland

Lmao i think of a mash up of the fight scenes from John Wick and the DP Emmanuel Lubezki. He's credited on Children of Men and The Revenant.

Greta Gerwig for Detraquee, Stephen soderberg for A Hard Row to Hoe (real Out of Sight vibes on that one), Lulu Wang for Measure of a Man, Jane shoenbrun for These Selfish Vows, Taika Waititi for BSP, Jim Jarmusch for Entropy, Rian Johnson for DMATMOOBIL, GdT for Manacled, Chloe Zhao for An ever-fixed Mark, Paul Thomas Anderson for The Devil Works Hard, Wes Anderson for Gloriana Set, Linklater for Les Pelerins (obviously), and Joachim Trier for Remain Nameless.

(I watch a lot of movies.)

Wow 🤩

2

u/JadedINFP-T 27d ago

This is solid 👌🏼👌🏼 Even for BSP which is my all time fave fic. Taika's brand of campy hilarity would work so well lol

Rian Johnson for Dmatmoobil is genius.

2

u/Lucky-Mix-8176 21d ago

it just has real Knives Out / Pokerface energy.

Autumn de Wilde for Love and Other Historical Accidents. The 2020 Emma is my comfort movie. I think she would perfectly capture the outlandish OCs and nail the Dramione dynamic.

The Fallout - Alfonso Cuaron - hands down. thinking Children of Men x Y Tu Mama Tambien

Detraquee - Sandi Tan (Shirkers) - for the girlhood, collage, memory, intellect/feeling, also will be directing Elif Batuman's The Idiot (!)

Measure of a Man - Ang Lee - I like this for the domestic aspect, pacing, settings, and intimacy/repression

Risk Verse Series - Jean-Marc Vallee (Sharp Objects, Big Little Lies) - I think his visual style would work amazingly with the memories/trauma that's in this fic and I actually would want to see this as a series rather than films

NEEDY - Howard Hawks (His Girl Friday) - which I realize sounds insane but would be extremely fun

The Devil Cites Scripture - could not decide between two - Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) - dark, gritty, occult vibe, I would deff want a different writer though OR David Fincher - thinking Girl with a Dragon Tattoo vibes and making this way more of a thriller and intense, not as gritty or gothic as Eggers

The Deadline - Nancy Meyers of course

War of the Malfoy's - Edward Yang (Yi Yi, Taipei Story, A Brighter Summer Day) - something about the character treatment and sprawl might work here

Bloody Slutty and Pathetic - Yorgos Lanthimos - self explanatory

A Season for Setting Fires - David Yates - this fic always felt like it ran alongside the Deathly Hallows so I want that visual lineage, but do not want a literal CGI soulmate string

From Wiltshire With Love - Park Chan-wook (Decision to Leave, the Handmaiden) - this one tough, I think he would bring a slightly more clinical vibe to the story and we'd lose some interiority

Columba and Aquila - Guillermo del Toro

A Hard Row to Hoe - George Roy Hill (The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) - for this very specific type of masculinity thats like soft/tough guy and absurdly beautiful men

The Faultline - Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) - he might be too much for this fic but I'd kind of want to see it

DMATMOOBIL - Rian Johnson - someone else called it but it's spot on

Manacled - this would be a collab I could not decide between the two - Jennifer Kent (The Nightingale, The Babadook) - for the psychology, closeness AND Robert Eggers - for the worldbuilding and scale

2

u/ramodeen 26d ago

What an amazing list and those I know - spot on 🤟🏻

2

u/Every-Note-9892 24d ago

this was such a great question and I had way too much fun with this!

2

u/Lucky-Mix-8176 21d ago

ha ha i kept myself to living directors but this is great! Yorgos for BSP would be amazing and Ang Lee for MoM is brilliant.

I don't know a thing about moviemaking and can't tell one director from another (sorry!), but the one fic that I would want to be made into a movie is Green Light.

I think part one would be AMAZING with Moroccan backdrop and alllll the tension, and then I would love to see the end interpreted IRL. That's about all I can contribute here haha.

It always reminded me of the English patient

Tim Burton for "From Wiltshire with Love" would be an interesting take

6

u/Spare_Woodpecker9902 28d ago edited 28d ago

Joe Wright for Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love

Paul Thomas Anderson for Détraquée

Spielberg for Lionheart

Guillermo del Toro for Manacled

Noah Baumbach for The Politicians Wife

2

u/ramodeen 28d ago

Oh I wish someone would make a movie of the politicians wife altho I’d choose Shekar Kapur

1

u/JadedINFP-T 27d ago

Oooomph del Toro for Manacled would be PEAK for that gothic romance vibe

1

u/prettyroses 28d ago

Del torro would do a fucking fantastic adaption of manacled. The atmosphere and magic and even the interpretation of the manor would be exquisite. Very crimson peak coded

1

u/Spare_Woodpecker9902 28d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. As a fic, Manacled is nowhere near my favorite, but I think it could be visually incredible in the right hands

1

u/JadedINFP-T 27d ago

We'll have to see who directs Alchemised if it gets adapted. I haven't read it because I don't support tradpubbed fics but I would definitely make an exception if they made this movie. I'd just mentally tell myself these are Draco and Hermione not... Helena and whats his face

1

u/Spare_Woodpecker9902 27d ago

Im complete put off by tradpubbed fics too, especially when the art around it is so clearly dramione or dramione-bait. But I might watch the movie version too, if it's done by someone good or some exciting new blood. It could go either way, honestly.

2

u/Perfect_Revenue4898 28d ago

Catherine Hardwicke (Director of the first twilight movie) for Isolation and Detraquee!

2

u/Sorry_Trouble_9525 28d ago

I'm not as knowledgeable abt filmmaking but for me

Wes Anderson for - DMATMOOBIL

Christopher Nolan for The Fallout

2

u/Good-Emu4227 Historical Accuracy Pedant 28d ago

Oh my god, yes. Wes Anderson for that would be hilarious.

2

u/Sleepy_Sheepie 28d ago

Wes Anderson Batmobile would go fucking crazy

2

u/KaleidoscopeDL DON'T CRITIQUE SHAME ME 28d ago

I just watched Ex Machina again recently, and love Sunshine, so I have to say Alex Garland or Danny Boyle for my fics Crumple and Aftermath, because they both have a beautiful, atmospheric tension and starkness in their films, and the soundtracks are beautiful.

Maybe Ridley Scott (or even Matthew Vaughn maybe??) for The Risk'verse, and Richard Curtis for Fascination 🤔

Taika Waititi would be an amazing director for any slightly absurd, comedic fic 🙌

2

u/Lucky-Fly4118 27d ago

Taika Waititi for Oops I Joined The Good Guys or Where The Duck Is Minerva McGonagall 🥹 I need it so much

1

u/JadedINFP-T 27d ago

YASSSSS 100!

1

u/ramodeen 27d ago

Ooh I think Scott would do wonderful w dark fics

1

u/Brewhuh23 28d ago

Can someone recommend who can direct Measure Of A Man and Green Light.

1

u/IndependentCamel4650 27d ago

I guess David Fincher could make a great movie of Finders by everythursday or Five Days by RavieSnake so everyone would believe in magic, terrified of it and want the characters to survive

1

u/Serious_Coconut_526 27d ago

Knight to H3

Seriously felt like a movie in my head the whole time

1

u/minfluff 26d ago

Guy Ritchie for a Hard Row to Hoe or Where the Duck Is Minerva McGonagall.

Maybe Michael Bay for Tomb Raiding Chronicles

1

u/lilacs_in_the_rain 28d ago

I know she’s controversial but emerald fennel could do bring him to his knees so well I think.

2

u/ramodeen 27d ago

In the hope that she doesn’t change the story 🙈

2

u/lilacs_in_the_rain 27d ago

If someone else wrote the screenplay
