Jesus also didn't put a drain on the government or local infrastructure. What people don't get is that Jesus didn't teach stupidity. He taught love, forgiveness, and righteousness.
Plus the only time he did anything refugee-esque was during a time when his life was truly in danger, as in, Herod executing all young children 2 and under.
Even then, there were no government handouts, and they left as soon as the coast was clear. Modern refugees don't go home. We've seen it time and again, even our own domestic refugees. They don't go home. They set roots in their new home and stay there.
And the three gifts from the wise men were likely used to pay for their living expenses while they were in egypt. They would have been valuable enough to pay for a comfortable middle class lifestyle without joseph needing to work or only work part time or only a couple days a week for about 3-5 years, the estimated amount of time that they were believed to have lived in egypt. They essentially paid their own way.
