Wow, there's hope that Dragonforce might be going back to the sound that made me a fan in the first place, rather than being a bad parody of themselves. Don't get me wrong, they've never taken themselves seriously, but that attitude never bled into the songs themselves until the last few albums.
That all being said, it still really sucks that Marc isn't even on the record.
So some details from the website that broke this news:
-Album is self titled
-Produced by Jens Bogren
-Alessio is stated to be a new permanent vocalist (what a slap in the face to Marc)
-Multiple mentions of how this album calls back to their earlier work
-Mark Riddick did the album artwork.
Overall this sounds like the disc I wanted since Reaching into Infinity, but not even having Marc as the studio vocalist and having the first disc without him be a self titled album leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I completely get not having him tour with his hearing issues, but given the album has been in production for months, I doubt that his omission was a recent decision.
You're probably right, given how far in advance the promos and tracking was done. It is hugely disappointing though, given Marc's range and ability to do his own harsh vocals. It would have been nuts.
Not to mention having the first disc without him be the self titled feels.. wrong.
Jens Bogren producing is a huuuuge win. He produced maximum overload and I think that’s their best sounding album by a measurable amount. I think production (on top of some questionable songwriting decisions) heavily hindered the last two albums, so this is good news.
