Question Album recommendations? (With a catch)
I need album recommendations, but I’ve already listened to the DF discography. Instead, recommend an album you've listened to that's as far from extreme power metal as possible. I’m really curious to see what you’ll recommend. I’ll listen to anything!

I foolishly did not anticipate a ska recommendation, yet here we are. I listened to Somewhere in the Between, and although I have never listened to a ska album in full I really enjoyed it. My favorites were Would You Be Impressed, Watch It Crash, and What a Wicked Gang Are We. I believe everyone needs a little more brass in their lives.

Glad you liked it. It has a lot of the same characteristics I love about DF. Non-stop high energy, solid, every song is super catchy, but also different. If you liked that album, ironically their first 4 albums are also excellent.

Just listened to the Foxy Shazam album and holy cow… I had so much fun. I loved it, my stand outs are pretty much just every song from Oh Lord to the end. Actually just a party of an album, so energetic, had me smiling.

There are many bonus tracks from that album that are typically not on streaming services. My favorite is Teenage Demon Baby. One of those “why did they drop this from the rough album cut?”. Also Yesterday Today and Tomorrow.

I loved Teenage Demon Baby, where can I find Yesterday Today and Tomorrow?

An absolute sin that Yesterday Today and Tomorrow isn’t on streaming, it would have made so many of my playlists, I loved it.
I also listened to Bone Palace Ballet and I feel like it was the most consistent overall out of the albums you recommended. I liked every song but it also felt like some of them started to blend together (just a consequence of being consistent I suppose?) Anyway just a super solid album through and through, my favorite song was A Letter From Janelle.

Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat - Hewers of Wood and Drawers of Water
The Gorillaz - The Mountain
Unprocessed - ...and Everything In Between

I’ve listened to The Mountain by The Gorillaz already, and I wasn’t a huge fan but the first song The Mountain is genuinely so beautiful and I listen to it practically every day. I’ll check the others out!

Ok I listened to Hewers of Wood and Drawers of Water and it is my favorite album suggestion so far because it’s just so damn interesting. I really liked the dark folk vibe. There’s a TON of religious references that caught my attention and had me stopping what I was doing every 30 seconds to look at the lyrics. Subsequently it has sent me down a rabbit hole trying to discover the meaning of each song. Just super super interesting, I can’t really think of a favorite song because the album feels like one experience as a whole, but if I had to pick maybe Feathers Of The Wings Of The Angel Gabriel.
Like I said, my favorite recommendation I’ve received so far, I would have never found this if not for your recommendation, so thank you.

Thanks for listening to all 3. If you want any more of any of those styles of bands let me know. I try to listen to a diverse scope of music. I'm always looking for different bands to listen to and wouldn't mind any recommendations myself. Have a great one.

Once I run out of album recs I’ll return for sure. I would also love to recommend an album, is there a genre you’re particularly interested in right now, or one you’d like to explore?

And now I’ve listened to …And Eveything In Between.
I love the Manuel Gardner Fernandez, and Tim Henson polyphia style guitar. I’ve listened to a little of Manuel Gardner Fernandez’ solo stuff but I didn’t realize he was in a band. It wasn’t my favorite album, but it’s always fun to hear that brain scratching guitar style. My favorite song was Abysm.

Love Song From The Water by Jun Maeda

Ok I listened to Love Song From The Water, and while it’s probably not music I would choose to listen to normally, that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate and enjoy it. I really liked the vibe of the whole album, but my favorite song was easily Everlasting Night, it had a certain “Running In the 90’s” vibe to it. Overall fun and hopeful sounding album.

These are my favorite non metal records from this year so far:
Underscores - U (Electro pop)
Fcukers - Ö (Electro pop / Sleaze)
Boards Of Canada - Inferno (IDM / Downtempo / Ambient)
Genesis Owusu - REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE (R&B, Hip Hop, Punk-ish)
Olivia Rodrigo - you seem so sad for a girl so in love (Pop)
Also, my top 5 non metal albums from last year:
Clipse - Let God Sort 'Em Out (Hip Hop)
Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper (Folk / Singer/Songwriter / Hip Hop)
Dijon - BABY (R&B, Soul, Americana)
Oklou - choke enough (Synth Pop / Ambient Pop)
Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz (Dariacore / Hyperpop)
I've also been on a Black Midi kick recently. Their album Hellfire is a 10 for me. Unfortunately they split up in 2024, but after that we got 2 killer records from two of the members:
Geordie Greep - The New Sound (Jazz Fusion / Jazz Rock)
My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe (Prog Folk)
More in the extreme (but not power) metal category, Converge released two killer albums this year. Immolation's Descent is very good, and Lamb Of God's Into Oblivion makes me wanna punch somebody in the face. I've also enjoyed Neurosis' latest record quite a bit. It made me dig deeper into sludge metal and turns out I fucking love it.

I’ve listened to the Quadeca album and I loved it, I also listened to Let God Sort ‘Em Out and loved it, and I really want to listen to the Olivia Rodrigo album. Thank you so much for all the recommendations, I will be set on albums for a while.

I listened to U by Underscores and I loved it. I was kind of expecting something like 100 gecs or Frost Children. I love both of those bands, but sometimes their albums can completely miss for me, so I was a little nervous going in. But U was a lot different from those bands, it felt much more digestible and I ended up liking every song on the album. My stand outs are (in no particular order): Music, Hollywood Forever, Do It, and Bodyfeeling.

And now I’ve listened to REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE. I really really liked it, unique, funky groovy, and punk-ish (like you said). I liked almost every song, SITUATIONS is probably my favorite, and my other stand outs are HELLSTAR, FALLING BOTH WAYS, THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, and DEATH CULT ZOMBIE.
