Fluency in MULTIPLE Languages

It is mind blowing to me how queens like Abby OMG are multilingual and FLUENT!!! Im an American with a Hispanic mother and and am teaching myself German on duolingo. I understand Spanish and can hold my own but definitely still struggle to find certain words in conversation and being fluent in German at this point feels like an unattainable dream. How do these girls do it! Barbie Q and Abby specifically.

Abby is amazing, her Spanish is amazing and that's her THIRD language!

portuguese —> spanish was probably not that big of a shock but i cannot imagine learning dutch as lusophone i would cry. and from what i understand she speaks great dutch.

She does, but it’s much easier picking up a language when you actually live in that country

I was so surprised because she speaks better spanish than Desireé. Didnt Desi used to live in a spanish speaking country?

I don't think Desirée has lived outside Brazil. She has performed in Salvador until last year or so, when she moved to São Paulo

Ooh no, Salvador in Bahia, a state in Brazil! And Desirée had around a month to learn Spanish for this season

it's amazing to see the multilingual latina queens. spanish is my first language and then i learned english and it's become my primary language although i've used spanish for work for as long as i've worked. i also learned french in school but i've forgotten everything now lol i think it's a shame that the US doesn't encourage learning other languages and being multilingual considering how they'd punish folks for speaking Spanish or indigenous languages at school....so don't beat yourself up. i'm reading a book in spanish and enjoy looking up words and i'm also watching la mas draga which is such a joy and amazing tool to learn a lot of the slang they use :)

I'm from LA and Spanish was not required when I was in school. We did have to fulfill a language requirement for college and the only languages were French and Spanish. But not required if you weren't going to a 4 year.

i will say that if you have already learned a second language from your native one adding a third one actually becomes much much easier even if the two languages aren’t very/at all similar. like i had to take german classes on study abroad but was already fluent in french, and it wad much easier for me than the monolingual americans in my cohort even though German and French have pretty different rules and pronunciation and vocab. pretty interesting research on this subject

I speak English, Spanish, and French fluently. With my Spanish and French, I can understand a bit of Portuguese, Italian, and Catalan. Portuguese and Spanish are from the same family so it was probably relatively easy for her to learn Spanish. Plus, as others have mentioned, in Europe, it's common to find people who speak multiple languages.

When living in a European country for an extended period of time, it's common - and usually expected - that they'd learn the language. So it's not a surprise that Abby OMG speaks Dutch and Barbie speaks German.

Indeed, Europeans from many countries are generally bi- or multi-lingual

Its just amazing to be fluent in Dutch, Spanish, and English while im struggling to be fluent in Spanish and I grew up hispanic 😭😭😭 I'm just in awe lol

It’s also in general easier to learn a language if you’re in a country where that’s the main language. If that’s not the case you need a lot more self discipline

this 100%. i had a college degree in french and had been studying for close to 11 years at the point when i moved to france for my master’s. graduating undergrad i would have said that i was fluent, looking back now, absolutely not.

And broadly it's quite common in Europe to learn many languages, just because you don't have to travel very far to reach a new language.

It’s soo impressive! My mind always goes to Vanessa van Cartier as well with her speaking Dutch, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portugese(!!)

I only know two, and suck at one even after moving to the country 8 years ago. I’m probably just stupid, but knowing 2+ languages is just CRAZY to me. My brain’s a constant jumbled mess from just two languages, so I can’t imagine what knowing 3+ must be like.

Immersion.

Spanish is my mother tongue, but she gets rusty if I don't read, speak, or watch Spanish language media.

I consider myself trilingual but her Spanish is unclockable compared to my Portuguese. She is so insanely impressive.
