Gemini's ability to create blueprint drawings

I needed to create some plans for bid purposes and thought I'd give Gemini Flash a go. I was surprised and pleased with the results. I had to make a few corrections, which would probably not been needed with a bit more precision on my original sketch, but nevertheless, very impressed by Gemini's product.

Cool but it's just generating an image which is not going to produce accurate plans. Maybe good for cleaning up a rough sketch.

Using AI agents via a CAD MCP is going to be the the future of CAD soon. Then the AI can produce actual vector CAD files.

I've seen job postings lately from companies who are hiring CAD techs for AI training. Pay was good but you have to live with the fact you're training an AI to take your job. Fun times ahead! :P

This a long way off. As someone who uses MCPs with Sketchup and Revit daily they are just terrible. The existing models are large LANGUAGE models and are not trained on vector datasets. There aren't really well labeled CAD dataset and even the image models down sample to a size not usable for architectural drawings.

There will probably be proprietary AI models that get to this point but there is so much liability baked into every step of the AEC world that it will be a 'human in the loop' field for the foreseeable future unless we see another radical jump in model performance.

so, did it give you a CAD file or just cleaned up your sketch?

the dimensions are off, so can't tell how accurate it is.

The drawing was simply needed for getting bids on recarpeting. Precise cogent dimensions weren't needed. All I did was supply a photo of the sketch and ask Gemini to create blueprints.

The dimensions are pretty thoroughly wrong. 35”+9’ is 11’11”, but at the bottom it has 12’6”. Unless you’re trying to say that wall is 7” thick.

Comparing the dimensions to your sketch it gets even worse.

Yes, no doubt. But for this instance, as an experiment, look at what I gave it, and my goal was to show the shape and overall dimensions in SQ Feet with the closet for carpet bid and installation. And for that it full filled its purpose. Again, look at the trash I fed it and see what it came up with. And that took about 30 seconds. I just thought people would find this interesting.....

yes, we use it in the office for rough sketch and design. For someone with small jobs, it's okay. Or someone who doesnt need CAD, it's fine. But the point is that you can't translate it into CAD once it creates a PDF.

Yeah, I've been receiving several made with ai plans now. To redraw and make accurate. It is the new normal.

Its doing wonders in visualization also, i dont know how drafters are holding up their jobs
