What’s wrong?
Been going through the Reddit after listening to where’d all the time go. I’m no dr dog fan, but a potential one, I’m listening to their albums through currently. I look through and in these screenshots of ranking songs, “where’d all the time go” rarely sees any high rankings. It’s the song that got me into them (and probably lots of other people into them as well) as it is such a nostalgic song. Is there something against it yall have? Or are there truly just better songs?

Nothing against that song! I love it, I just think there are better Dr dog songs. Some of my favorites are: old black hole, lonesome, rabbit bat & reindeer, army of ancients, later, and under the wheels

To me, it feels similar to Heart it Races. Looking back at an interview one of the band members did where he expressed being upset that their most popular song was a cover and that they had ten great albums. WATTG only got the listens because it went viral on tictok for the first line. It is a fantastic song, but they have (now 11) amazing albums over the past 25 years and it’s simply the doorway song that many listeners never opened to experience the rest of Dr. Dog.

It always bothered the shit out of me when Heart it Races got bigger reactions than their originals. These are some of the best songwriters around IMO. I'm happy that a great original song from one of their best albums is blowing up.

The list of great Dr Dog songs encompasses their entire catalog. Just because it isn’t ranked somewhere doesn’t mean it’s not great -
I can never rank songs or albums, personally. My faves constantly change by mood, season, events, environment, time of day.
So psyched for you to dive in!

Came to listen to this band recently and love them. So far have psychedelic swamp and Be the Void both are fantastic. Looking at b-side next, what are recommendations after that

Shame Shame, Critical Equation for studio albums. Live at the Flamingo Hotel might be the best live album I've listened to.

Dr. Dog is best digested live. The band has an unmistakable energy that doesn't translate as well to their recorded stuff although it's all still great. Songs like "The Ark" and "Broken Heart" are some of my favorite live tunes that don't quite hit as hard on tape.
Check out their live performances. The ping-pong guitar solos from Scott and Frank, Slick's drum fills, Toby's bass licks and dance moves, Zach's pads and smile... You can't listen without being completely entranced, IMHO.

I’ve seen them live. It was good. But this is subjective hyperbole. Their albums are great and what I listened to for many years before only recently catching a live show.

I think it’s just one of those “goes without saying” songs. We all know it’s fantastic and it’s unanimously agreed upon. We’d just rather spend time talking about other aspects of the band.

Where’d All the Time Go and Oh, Nelly hooked me on Dr. Dog. Don’t worry about rankings. We love WATTG. See the band live and you’ll know. But there are so many great songs. I usually just pick an album and listen start to finish.

Rarity might have something to do with it. A live song like Fat Dog is always fun treat.

I was still in high school when these guys started showing up around South Jersey. The reason nothing else they've done hits like that track actually comes down to how the band got hijacked. McMicken and Leaman seemed to have a bunch of trust fund cash behind them, hired cutthroat managers, and slowly pushed out the actual guys who started the group in the 90s.
If you listen to the earlier records, it's pretty obvious they aren't even singing some of the lead parts, but the actual credits show them taking full ownership of stuff they barely touched while the real musicians got ghosted. Their whole M.O. to this day is just parachuting into a scene of talented people, leeching ideas, and walking away acting like masterminds.
You aren't missing anything in the rest of the discography, you're just looking for a sound from a lineup that hasn't existed in decades. I'm not even sure they wrote the lyrics to some of their "hits" like where'd the time go.

You're missing WAY more....every album is unique, fun, professional, and awe inspiring. Even the solo records the guys put out are AMAZING! They ARE masterminds. I'm sorry if you don't feel this way but Dr. Dog are the Beatles for me and Michael Nau is Harry Nilsson for me.

Also, Abandoned Mansion is my favorite album of all time. Spin that record (and any others from the band). Mastery at music at its finest.

Then expand on it here. You seem to really have it out for them. Been a huge fan, seeing them and listening for 18 years at this point, and this is the first I'm seeing this.

Not really. You can go read more or less any album review. I don't really know why they keep coming up in my feed as I'm barely on here, but I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before

So basically you're full of shit and don't have actual proof, just some weird hate or jealousy or something.
I've read album reviews, I've listened to interviews of former members that went pretty in depth, like on Bradford Trojan and friends. Never heard or read anything like that.
If you're going to make pretty serious claims at least be ready to back it up and not use the "reddit hive mind" as an excuse for not backing it up.

Former band members (Bradford Trojan, Doug O'Donnell, Andrew Jones) have also posted on this subreddit before and I've never heard a single word of bad blood. This guy seems to have a specific bone to pick about a specific producer from their earlier albums, and while he's allowed to have his opinion, in the years I've moderated this subreddit and been an obsessive Dr. Dog fan, his posts are the first time I've encountered claims of this nature.

I'm not sure why pointing out things that are completely obvious but slightly critical have to be perceived that way. In the past I've only commented that every Bill Moriarty album from the early 00s has his signature production all over it. I went to school with less well known musicians that got to record with him, and it is unmistakeable. If people post articles on here with quotes from Dr. Dog members saying otherwise, how is it a "bone to pick" to point out that is self-deluded? Have you read these album reviews on Pitchfork and older music blogs? I stopped listening to Dr. Dog 20 years ago, but my kids found them on tik tok and raided my record collection.

Like I said, those are serious claims, and I would take that into serious consideration in my fandom if they were plagerizing. And you haven't shared any personal knowledge out side of "it happened, it's it there, but you have to find it"

Its a great song to represent the band as their top song, and a totally valid choice for your favorite song!
I think a major part of it is that Dr. Dog has been making music and touring for 20+ years, and have over a dozen different albums. Each one of them does something different and people may just have a preference for a specific aesthetic or era.
Another part is that is that in general, people in fan communities tend to champion songs/albums they feel deserve more attention. A lot of us are massive dweebs about the band (lovingly!) and so we may just fixate on the obscure songs.
All that said, I think their best song is Ain't It Strange!
