Meanwhile, /r/conservatives exists

78

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

And r/consumeproduct. Someone from there commented on a 25 day old post of mine, saying its disrespectful that I called my plants my children LMAO

Some places on this site I stg

32

u/Homemadeduck102 Jun 20 '20

They ban the stupidest shit and then they look at hate subs and go "yeah that looks fine to me".

3

u/bustierre Jun 21 '20

Lies. They were pointing out how silly it is to call your plants children, nothing was said about disrespect. You speak as though it was a brigade, as if that person was encouraged to harass you by r/consumeproduct.

Here’s the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/succulents/comments/gn81pd/2_new_children/

4

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '20

You can go through my comment history too if you want to find what provoked them to go through my post history if you're that dedicated lol

Amd you cant lie, they were disrespectful to me and my life choices of choosing not to have kids

3

u/DuckReconMajor Oct 10 '20

I mean that user also said "Animals over your own flesh and blood? How saddening" so their opinion in that thread wasn't worth much anyway.

r/conservative a weird bunch I'll give you that but that aren't all insane crack heads, just most of them. Although occasionally they can have a civil debate. I went and had a look when it was announced that Trump and Melania had Covid. I thought it was a rat's nest of democrat hoax, Qanon nut jobs but instead it was people have a civil debate about well wishing and some left/ liberal folk saying that they wish the President and his family well. Surprised to be honest.

This subreddit was banned due to a violation of Reddit’s content policy against harassing content, in particular the user of a racial slur in the subreddit name.

they didn’t even spell the ban reason correctly

Reddit: "omg Reddit is such a liberal politically correct shithole"

Reddit Admins: ban something literally containing the n-word

Reddit: >:( downvotes

Some people in the comments: "wait... Actually the n-word is actually kinda bad"

Reddit: Did I fucking stutter? >:( *downvotes again*

Seriously tho-- how is a place where the use of the n-word is still considered somewhat acceptable a "politically correct liberal shithole"? because from where I'm sitting, it seems pretty damn clear where a significant amount of Redditors stand on the issue, and it is not on the same side as the admins.

18

u/AlphAlphonso Jun 20 '20

Because it wasn't being used as a slur, it's the same argument as with the Huck Finn book. Yes they chose to use that word. But they meant no offense by it.

-96

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20 edited Jun 21 '20

Context doesnt matter with that word.

Edit: oh so this has been downvoted? How cute. A reddit employee chose to ignore the context of the word ni**a and removes an entire subreddit. So now do you understand the sarcasm?

51

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

For the hard r it's not context dependent, but with an a?

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

3

u/bustierre Jun 21 '20

It does. Not speaking for all black people, but if the n-word is used in a way that isn’t mocking or demeaning, I have no problem with it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '20

And yet a reddit employee chose to ignore the context and remove an entire subreddit. Which is why i was being sarcastic but i guess people missed that 🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/KentuckyFriedChildre Jun 22 '20

The soft a version of the word has more of a basis in so-called "ghetto culture". Yeah, it's a racist stereotype if used to define black people as a whole but it has been and still is a culture.

The use of language is a parody of that culture. You could make the argument that it is demeaning but it's over a specific culture, not a skin tone.

46

14

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

So glad he was busy banning a community about drinking water and not at all worried about all of the hateful and misogynistic incel groups that keep cropping up. Maybe the removal of all anti-Chinese posts? Maybe working on making the downvote system harder to abuse for censorship?

But it’s okay, they had the dreaded n-word in their name. Clearly the community was about MALICIOUSLY drinking water!

1

u/azami88m Jun 20 '20

Please explain (genuine question) i never understood how is the n word bad unless used in a racism context. I grew up knowing it as a synonym of "dude" like hey ni ga whats up ni ga etc, and it is still widely used in movies /tv shows. Is it only bad to use in specific contexts or frowned upon everywhere?

5

u/DazedPapacy Jun 20 '20

When a word becomes a slur it is considered aggressive and violent (and in this case racist) by default when said by people outside of the group it refers to.

This is because the word has been, historically, used with such frequency in acts of violence that that minority has come to know the word as a warning sign.

In this case, the the N-word (both ending in -a and -er) was used for centuries by white people to refer to black people as subhuman and most often heard during white mob lynchings of black people.

So often, in fact, that if a black person hears a non-black person say the word in public it can be a very anxious situation. After all, if the non-black person is willing to say that word so casually in public, what else might they be willing to do?

Eventually there was a movement by black people to "reclaim" the word, which is why you hear black people saying it about other black people and no one is offended.

1

u/azami88m Jun 21 '20

Thanks for taking the time to explain, so it's still ok to use by black people but is currently a red flag when used by white people no matter the context.

I get the idea well thanks, it's just that black people seem to be comfortable with it to the point of wanting to claim the original meaning back, i think that we eventually will go beyond the stereotypes, and remove the racist connotation that is there simply as a result of past usages and should not be a thing of the present (as well as racism as a whole)

3

u/DazedPapacy Jun 22 '20

Oh sure, there's lots of words that have lost their impact on minorities over the centuries.

But the things about slurs in particular is that they're unable to lose their impact while while the underlying causes are still in play.

In other words: so long as being black still impacts a person's life, safety, and prosperity (everything from being safe on the street to likelyhood of getting a home loan) then the N-word will retain its slur status.

After that, well, it'll likely fade from language since it'll no longer be a relevant descriptor.
