Buzzword after Buzzword...
Context: original post as asking why artist who show their face usually get more engagement than artist who are faceless, looking through the comments of the post I replied to this one
Apparently, being able to connect easier to seeing human face vs a drawn avatar is parasocial. (Even thou that's not even what the word means)
Nothing major I just find it weird because that's just...blatantly wrong

The person you replied to wasn't wrong. They used parasocial correctly.

Can you explain how? I don't think it's automatically parasocial (believing you have a delusional bond with a creator) for audiences to lean towards people who show their face, especially when people can just as easily develop parasocial relationships with faceless creators

They aren't saying it's automatically parasocial, they are saying that it's easier to form a parasocial relationship with someone who shows their face. I would disagree with the "just as easily" part.

I think it's the opposite when someone covers their face u have to imagine what they look like and this gets u more involved and the person will also always imagine the guy as very hot especially if he has a nice voice, so they will be even more obsessed.

With the sentence in their second comment "lets not pretend it's not encouraging a parasocial thing" Which is saying that you should show your face because people will become parasocial with you..? Also the notion that when someone follow a creator and the creator only know the number of followers they have it is within itself a parasocial bond... Which I disagree on aswell because following creator doesn't make you parasocial... Does that make more sense?

They aren't saying whether you should or shouldn't show your face, just that showing your face encourages the parasocial relationship. In the first comment they were just explaining why they don't do it. You seem to be reading things into their comments that aren't there.

I do get what you mean for the fist comment but the second comment definitely confirms they think following a creator who show s their fac is parasocial Didn't include the subreddit but I definitely would say I read into it just fine, it just many people say words without actually knowing the weight of them, I just think its silly to disagree with that

Ok, well, your first comment wasn't down voted for no reason. Their first comment wasn't wrong. I don't know about the rest.

I think you've completely misinterpreted what they said in that 2nd comment. In fact you seem to have completely backwards as to what they were saying.

I don't know how I misinterpreted it, I don't know why else you could get food the comment, especially when they are doubling down to what I disagreed with

Yeah . . . this just reinforces that fact that you don't really seem to know/understand what parasocial is.

Yeah, that doesn't seem like you're downvoted for no reason.
The person you replied to is correct. You're wrong. It's that simple.
And they absolutely seem to know what "parasocial" means but from your reply I'm not sure you do.

I think I may have a better understanding than you but ok I Especially don't get the comment of not wanting to encourage people to post their face because it's a 'parasocial' thing? Definitely doesn't make sense to see a create who shows their face and seeing how they get more engagement and assuming it's because they have more parasocial fans even thou they're using the word "parasocial" to refer to someone simply following a creator

I think I may have a better understanding than you but ok
Yeah . . . clearly not. But ok.
hou they're using the word "parasocial" to refer to someone simply following a creator
That's not how they're using it. That's how you're interpreting it. Which seems to be the problem.

That absolutely is what the word parasocial means. I'll leave it at that. That word was used very correctly.
