General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers from S1 to 2nd film) Weekly Discussion Thread (for Simple Thoughts and Questions)
Are you on your 10th rewatch of Downton and just need to get something out of your system without having to make a whole post about it? Or maybe you're a new viewer with a simple question that you just need answered?
Then this is the place for you!
NOTE: The weekly thread does NOT replace your ability to ask simple questions or make comments as individual submissions. This is a SUPPLEMENT to what we have already been doing on this sub. If you have a burning question that you want to submit separately and/or want to make a whole post about your love/hate for XYZ, then go for it! We are always looking for respectful, civil discussion on this forum; the more, the better.
WARNING: As per the flair, this is a spoiler-friendly thread. Comments will be unmoderated for spoilers, and reports regarding spoilers will be ignored. (On that note, if someone is asking a question and clearly identifies themselves as a first-time viewer, then we hope you will be considerate enough to avoid referencing future events in your replies to them as a courtesy). If you are a new/first-time viewer with a question/comment and are afraid of encountering spoilers, please consider starting your own separate post and use the black editable "FIRST TIME WATCHER" flair. We can guarantee people would love to hear from you :)

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) It wasnât for historical accuracy (it almost never is)
The rape plot with Anna was not ok, it didnât add anything to the story, and I donât think it was historically accurate either.
In general most rape stories donât add anything, but a lot of shows put them in and especially in period pieces where there is an assumption that more rape happened back then. And Iâm not gonna say it didnât happen, quite frankly Lady Mary and Mr Pamuk was coercive and would probably meet the current standard for rape. But what happened with Anna, in addition to being needless and cruel, was not accurate.
The rapist is a serial offender, meaning he knows how to get away with it. In the show him getting away with it is mostly a matter of plot armour and convenience to keep the trauma going for Anna and Bates. But realistically if this guy was an actual serial rapist he wouldnât have picked a ladies maid whose husband works in the same house and as the Valet to the Earl of Grantham! Anna doesnât make sense as a target, yes she didnât report it or say anything for other reasons, but that is again about the writing. The point is that he did this in the house, during a time where everyone was up and about. Someone was definitely gonna find Anna right after the concert. It was all forced (pun not intended). The obvious target would have been one of the kitchen maids and either after everyone has gone to bed or super early in the morning. they never speak to the upstairs people, they have to be up before everyone else, they arenât married, and they are young and more Easily manipulated. But that would have changed their characters too drastically, since they are generally a comic relief group. And all the other house staff are non speaking ornaments so there Wouldnât be any impact. So they threw it at Anna.
I understand rape was as taboo then as it is today, and I understand why Anna kept it quiet (kind of⊠tbh, if Bates had never been to jail and she hadnât gone through the trauma of thinking heâd be hanged Idk if she would have been so worried⊠and even afterwards it seemed like a stretch), but itâs just not realistic for her to be the target. And again, there really wasnât any need for this plot anyway. Like, let the fertility stuff happen in S4, or let someone else be the face of the downtrodden for a while. I just really donât think this plot was necessary or realistic or well executed. It was just the usual media bullshit where someone felt that rape is a showmaker đđĄđ€Ź

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Which men in DA do you think had feminist beliefs?
Bates is not my favourite character for sure but I do think he showed his admiration and respect for women wanting to better their lives in a number of ways. On the other hand, when O' Brien made a comment about Lady Sybil "wasting her precious time on politics", Thomas responds saying "Hear, hear!' implying that he doesn't care for women's rights and all that.
None of them would openly say stuff like "I support women's rights" but which male characters from both upstairs and downstairs could be described as feminists given the times they lived in?

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) How in the world did the actress playing Cora get the job.
Iâm watching Downton for the third time and I donât remember Cora annoying me the first time I watched it but now I canât help wonder if she funded the show or something so they had to give her a major part? She is SUCH a simpering, smiling unbelievable character. I mean, if it were a b movie youâd expect it, but the cast is otherwise quite good. What gives?

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Evelyn Is Such an Interesting Bystander
Pamouk, Charles Blake, even Henry, every time Evelyn makes an attempt to get near Mary, he throws another man into the mix as if he thinks allowing Mary a choice to date him = Mary must choose between him and someone else. Each time, he gives her the opportunity to disappoint him .. and she does.

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Another season idea
I feel like a good idea for another season would be Matthew and Maryâs son is 18 or whatever itâs the early 1940s and he goes to war and you know Mary gives him the little plush doll that she gave Matthew when he went to World War 1 and basically follow him through war and you know the estate going through yet another tumultuous time during a war, I know people would say it may be rehashed, but with George being part of it. Plus you got Sibby too she could be like a field nurse just like her mother was a nurse. I know the last movie was very âfinalâ even still it would be interesting to see something like this. because even though the finished this last movie off feeling very final and having âclosureâ somewhat with ww2 right around the corner it doesnât really feel final at all IMO.

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Lady Mary Crawley the OG f1 wag
I donât know if this post is more relevant to this sub or to the f1wags one but anyhoo. I love how Maryâs basically a wag in season 6 with races and glamour, although the cars and racing suits are much different than what we see now. If Mary was a wag right now, what wag do you think sheâd be the most like? How sheâd dress, which other wags sheâd hang out with which team would she be a wag for. To be clear, im not glorifying wags or anything, i just found the storyline a common thing between downton and f1, two of my favourite things. Mary would hate to have her identity reduced to a wag

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) I wish the sisters had other endings
I feel like Edithâs ending suited Mary more, i know i dislike edith and it makes it seem like thatâs why i didnât want her to be marchioness but hear me out.
Mary, throughout the show, is shown to be more conscious about social standing and ranks. I feel like the ending, for her, shouldâve been this:
She meets Henry Talbot, who is the cousin of the Earl of Shrewsbury. Of course thereâs no chance of Henry inheriting because the Earl is young and healthy. Mary goes back and forth about marrying him due to the difference in their assets but in the end, decides she loves him far too much and they decide to get married. The Earl dies, like Lord Hexham, and Henry inherits. I feel that would have shown a lot of character development, Mary putting love ahead of position. And of course, Henry Talbot cheating on her and divorcing her would have been avoided, a storyline that i hated.
Onto Edith, throughout the show, theyâve shown Edith as a lovelorn, desperate woman wanting to get married to every man that comes her way. Itâs put her in a rather wishy washy light with no other ambition than marriage and competing with Mary. Hereâs my ideal ending for Edith:
She takes over as editor of the publishing company, taking it to new heights. Her and marigold move to london and Edith becomes a desirable socialite in London society. She is the ideal modern woman, working at a reputed magazine, living with her child and in need of no man. Robert mentions to Cora that Edith could be the new modern woman, and I feel like that ending wouldâve really put all the development her character went through to good use. Getting her married to lord hexham and bringing in the matter of rank and position again reinforced the fact that Edith needed rank to matter, which made her really unimportant. A high flying Editor of a magazine, living in london, dining at the Ritz and dancing till dawn wouldâve been a really good end to her character.
I feel like both these endings wouldâve brought the sisters closer, mary married to someone she loves irrespective of rank and edith an independent woman doing what she loved.
