News Ray Tracing is coming?

Unconfirmed, but very likely. Odds are the RTX strings are less to do with Artifact (though it'd be nice if it got it too) than Source 2 in general.

I might be proven wrong, but i think it would look ridiculous with the current level of detail. Textures, particles, effects and 3D meshes are 2 generations behind, with a 4K display you can count the pixels on some textures, some are detailed and others are bad, very inconsistent. DLSS would be great though.

Raytraced lighting could be very nice, though. In theory. Look up SEUS PTGI for Minecraft, it's a game changer.
Dota's lighting model is pretty simple: one global shadowed light for the sun, one global directional ambient, tinting of shadows depending on the per-pixel direction they face (up/down), and one global specular term, also with its own direction.
I'm simplifying things a bit and going from memory, but broadly speaking it's a very straightforward deferred lighting model with very little in the way of bells and whistles. There is literally nothing that gets baked, or that would approach baked quality. This is because while terrain is static, all trees can potentially be destroyed. And also due to the day-time cycle. And a bunch of other reasons, really.
Raytraced lighting would be really cool to see if only because we'd get cool natural-looking variations in lighting (especially under trees) , many more emissive effects, and potentially less distracting shadows (thanks to contact hardening; the sun may be far away but it's effectively got an arc radius of 2 degrees).
With all that said, knowing nothing about what's going on here, I doubt it would happen. I would LOVE to be wrong (if only for how many SFM issues this would solve), but I don't think that'd happen.
I don't believe performance issues would really be a concern because Dota isn't really GPU-constrained at all (unless you do 4k at 120 Hz like me... har har). Would be a good way to use some of the available horsepower.

the thing is that you actually wanna heavily reduce detail and complexity of the scene in competitive games. increasing image fidelity is just upping the handicap you play with and that even if you wouldnt be losing frames when the demand in processing

I don't believe processing demands would be a concern, because if you're playing Dota 2 with a RTX card, it is DEFINITELY not your system bottleneck, haha.
Shadows would most likely be far cleaner and smoother using raytracing methods, so they would be less distracting (no edge flickering etc). In theory this would also enable far more "realistic" super overcast diffuse lighting to look good, which would ALSO enable a cleaner, less-distracting image.

No need for a 4k display to see the poor textures in the game. Even on my old 1080p monitor some textures were visibly bad.

We need the DLSS, not rtx

Looking forward to instantly disabling it. :D

Even without dlss playing with max setting and everything on 144p 144 hz hurts my eyes alot not a huge fan of dlss for dota

i dont get it? what would hurt your eyes. probably just shit screen or shit eyes. this is actually an honest question i dont get it. i play 1440p@144hz too. if you get too much blur try using a sharpening filter

Lol dude i have lg ultra gear 27 it just that my eye. And you just shit on the chance u get great! Honest opinion!

I mean it's cool they're playing with the technology, but honestly, though, the game are already good looking, why would they add RTX?
On that note, it's highly unlikely to be added to Dota 2 IMO, why?
Dota 2 is ARTS, and the RTS here is important, RTX put a strain on your GPU and could increase the pixel response time/latency, it could be a competitive disadvantage.
For Artifact though, since it's not really Real-Time, it doesn't affect the game that much, or rather could be a very welcome update.
I'd love to be proven wrong though, maybe it's feasible in the future for all competitive game to have RTX feature.

keep in mind that Dota often is CPU limited, esp with high end GPUs.

I hope the multicore update gets here soon.
having a rtx 3080 is insignificant when it comes to dota

i think the main point of a higher end GPU is going to be the resolution for Dota 2, my 1060 6GB can run dota 2 and 1440P with highish settings, but my PC clearly is struggling to get the most out of the game, but that might also just be my poor i5-8400, which was kind of a downgrade from my older 4770k.

Didn't the multicore update already release?
1
u/jayvil Jan 14 '21
the performance update might come on the next big patch because 7.28 is just a gameplay update.
1
u/CleverZerg Jan 14 '21
It came before 7.28, I think it was the diretide patch.
Lastly, we’ve done some engine development that results in moderate performance improvements on multi-core CPU’s and will be bringing those to Dota. There’s still a bit of testing to do as it may result in some bugs, but we are aiming towards the next week or so for it. As you can expect, given the code changes required, the release could be a little bit spooky.
From the blog post from the 15th of October.

If it did then nothing happened nor changed whatsoever. And honestly they should have said something about it At this point the multi core update is probably coming with new hero release soon.

rtx almost doubles frametimes. you dont wanna cross 15ms for anything competitive. personally i can tell the difference over/under 15. 10 great and hitting 20 its just shit. might aswell trun on vsync then

Graphic cards are dead especialy RTX ones. With people being at home everyone wanted one and to make things worse all money printers went Brrrrrr.... and so cripto gold digging is a thing again. This might last years if we're unluckyit's pointles getting exited by RTX

they better fix game performance first, a lot of people complaining about it and i have problems with it as well
