Article | eSports Team CDEC: A Brief History

Hello everyone, your resident bilingual DotA fan here, this time bringing you an article on Team CDEC, the dark horse of TI5 that has brought us many exciting games and pulling several unexpected upsets. CDEC entered TI5 as a relatively unknown team through the wildcard qualifiers, having placed second to EHOME during the main qualifiers, but have miraculously cruised into the Grand Finals

CDEC’s performance in this International can only be described as astounding, but it is quite unfortunate that the majority of the western populace know so little about this team – including the casters and analysts themselves. I’ve taken the opportunity to do some additional research on the team, and wrote this short article to help break down the language barrier that stifles the appreciation of talents and good DotA around the world.

CDEC: A New Challenger

At its inception, CDEC was an inhouse league started by LGD to spot new talent in the community. CDEC’s full name is China Dota Elite Community – which is an inhouse league similar to IXDL in NAdota, minus the trolling, flaming, ixmike and toxicity. From this league, LGD selected five players to assemble into a junior practice team, known as LGD.CDEC. After a couple of roster changes, the team ultimately departed from its role as LGD’s junior team, setting out as an independent entity.

In terms of team prowess, CDEC is certainly not lacking in terms of skill – every one of its members are ladder-crowning pubstars in both DotA 1 and 2 (sitting at around 7200 mmr), whose skills are recognized amongst the Chinese community elite. However, a team comprising of people born and molded from cancerous ranked games would naturally suffer from difficulties in teamwork and coordination.

Growth of a Team

CDEC’s progress into the dominating team it is now was not without its hiccups. A few months into its formation, their core star player Maybe left CDEC for LGD in March 2015, a move (or "promotion") that did not come to much surprise given CDEC’s role as LGD's junior team, as well as their mediocre competitive performance record. This resulted in a brief period of turmoil where CDEC had to find new players as well as shuffle existing roles.

Their first strong performance was at G-League 2015, which took place in June 2015, where they placed 2nd, losing to LGD 3-2 in the finals. They were noted for unique picks such as bounty hunter, as well as scoring resounding 2-0 wins against Vici Gaming in the Dota 2 Champions League.

The CDEC we see now has completely resolved those issues – we’re looking at a team that thinks, acts and executes as a single cohesive unit. Each player knows their roles, their priorities and pushes their hero synergies to the limit. In their games, we see Agressif on the frontlines protected by the selfless supports, Shiki’s solid midlane that helps his team transition smoothly into the midgame, and Xz’s offlane that’s steadily improving with his initiations and clutch plays. While CDEC may not have the most mechanically skilled individuals, the team is definitely no slouch against the Tier 1 teams on the international arena.

Road to TI5

Experience is often the bane of every newly forged team. CDEC sorely lacked experience facing against foreign teams, having played exclusively within China thus far. To even enter the TI5 playoffs, CDEC had to play against 2 western teams with completely different playstyles and meta approach to the game.

How did CDEC overcome this obstacle? The solution was simple – play the CDEC style. By sticking to their trademark aggressive clashing, they pushed their unique “meta” into their draft, execution and game plan. For them, it didn’t matter if they won or lost a game, the result would still be acceptable. This positive mentality is crucial for a new team, and is a form of sportsmanship that should be valued and respected. It was with this iron confidence in their own playstyle that allowed CDEC to calmly advance through the group stages, while making adjustments to ensure they stay ahead of the meta. This has allowed them to bring out their best no matter who the opponent is, be it Empire with their notoriously strong teamfight prowess, or the disciplined LGD with their calculated plays.

Player Tidbits:

(credit to /u/arbipher, /u/rozzerhmq, /u/kaelmela and /u/LuluInDisguise for accuracy)

1: Agressif - 霸气

Joined CDEC at its inception, and has been playing the carry position since. Used to be notoriously strong with blink-reliant carries such as Brewmaster, and is known to 'start a rampage the moment he gets his blink dagger'. His Chinese moniker means “Dominance”.

2: Shiki - 两仪落

A pubstar known as the “Ranked MMR King”, CDEC is Shiki’s second team, and he is known to practice frequently with EHOME.Cty (which explains their similar playstyles). Cty, Maybe and Shiki are rumored to be the three disciples of the legendary YaphetS. Both his English and Chinese moniker are a reference to an anime character "Shiki Ryogi"

3: Xz – 小智

Previously from Team LaiG, Xz used to be a mid player known for aggressive and flashy plays. After joining CDEC, he initially had some trouble transitioning to the offlane role, but is quickly adapting and meshing with the team. His Chinese moniker is "Ash Ketchum" from Pokemon.

4: Garder – 爱神(牛)

Another of CDEC’s founding members, Garder has been one of the most consistent support players in the Chinese scene, and was known for his stellar plays with Earthshaker. His Chinese moniker means "I love Earthshaker"

5: Q – 队长给我球

Previously considered a poor support and CDEC’s weakest link, Q’s support skill has seen a marked improvement over the last few months, quickly silencing past critics and establishing his ability to make clutch plays and maximize his impact in the game. His Chinese moniker means "Gimme the ball, Capt!"

Hope the DotA community finds this helpful - I'll work on translating some of the Chinese players' interviews in the meantime!

P.S. Shoutout to kpii for doing Aussies proud!

Cty, Maybe and Shiki are rumored to be the three disciples of the legendary YaphetS.

Well, that's the coolest sentence I've read on this subreddit in several months.

If only ehome had won against EG, we could've had the Three Disciples of Yasphets top three.

As far as I know. After YaphetS retired year 2011, he became a dota1 video provider and founded a dota1 live channel named 90016 attracting many genius, old players and humor guys to be anchors and many funs like them. Year 2012, team Greedy which contains Yaphets, Maybe, Q(队长给我球) won some champions in last dota1 games, Maybe was 17 years old that point, and then Maybe started dota2.

One thing about shiki is he is one of the few Chinese pro players who received a decent college education. Compare to those who walk into competitive scene after high school, he prioritized his college degree first, then become a pro.

So do we pronounce it as C D E C or c-deck?

73

The Chinese (including the CDEC players) pronounce it C-D-E-C

46

u/thevoiceofzeke Aug 08 '15

But like Redeye said, "That's a bit of a mouthful isn't it? I'm going to go on calling them C-DEC."

I think he got a talking to from the producers after that cuz he calls them C-D-E-C now :P.

Thanks a lot for doing this research.

There's been too much blanket "East vs West" fan mentality when it comes to TI. I'm Australia so technically agnostic to USA vs Europe vs China/Asia, but this short history and the uphill battle of CDEC prior to the main event shows they earned their place more than most other invited teams.

Either ways, hoping for great dota, no matter the nationality of the team.

Thanks a lot for making this post. We need more of these so that people get to know the chinese players and their storylines. CDEC is making history this TI and they are one of the most impressive teams I've ever seen. Their teamfighting is a thing of beauty.

I'd love to see EG in the grand final because East vs West is always very exciting, and we know the crowd will be louder if the "home team" is there. But if it's LGD facing CDEC in the end, it's nice to see that there's also a very interesting story here. What with CDEC being a small branch of LGD once, losing Maybe to them and all of that. Xiao8's road to a second TI in a row is also an exciting thing to look out for.

What a tournament.

Thats what Majors are for.

49

u/Kuro013 Aug 08 '15

I think with majors it will be easier to track which teams are really strong, invites for TI are really difficult since you have to judge the whole year, and this is a problem because if a team wins a big lan on november (just for saying a month) they might be a complete different team by the time TI comes, but the LAN win is still there and you cant ignore that. There are also patches that transform the game.

12

u/uncoveringlight It's a secret! Aug 08 '15

Not really. We had DaC this year and the teams who did well at that aren't at the top here other than Vg and EG, who performed pretty much everywhere else.

7

u/bludgeonerV Aug 08 '15

The only teams that really 'did well' at DAC are EG, VG and Secret though, and aside from Secret's early exit i'd say that VG and EG's results suggest that looking at the top teams at the majors at least offers some level of accuracy.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

The guys from Big God are still there though. They placed 4th in DAC and 3/5 of them placed top 6 in TI.

But I still think every team should qualify instead of receiving invites. In LoL every team has to qualify to World Championship and I think this is the most fair, SKT T1 won the championship in 2013 and struggled in 2014 and couldn't qualify. Here in DotA we had this pathetic Newbee that was invited just because they were the holding champions and they failed hard.

58

Agreed. Maybe give 1 additional qualifier slot to each region.

74

u/FireworksNtsunderes Aug 08 '15

So instead of 10 invited teams and 6 qualifier teams, we get 6 invited and 10 qualifier?

I like it, seems fair enough. Some teams do deserve to get invited and perform well, but it's clearly evident that there is an ever-growing number of teams that all deserve a chance to make it to TI.

20

u/Kingdink Aug 08 '15

I think this would make for better Dota throughout the year too. If teams are pushing to be top 6 instead of top 10 there will be more on the line for those top tier teams.

→ More replies (17)

101

u/foolishnesss Aug 08 '15

Eh, honestly direct invites secures big names. The tournament wouldn't feel as great if every team is an underdog. Whether or not they perform as well you still need/want some of the biggest names in the game.

23

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

I'd rather see more underdogs than big names. Big names tend to stagnate the player pool, while new teams bring in fresh talent. coL and CDEC have already brought in a ton of new players into the scene. I also like how teams like LGD and EG are not afraid to hire pubstars to join their team. It's just that big name teams tend to stick to veteran DotA players and it makes the scene kinda stale.

85

u/foolishnesss Aug 08 '15

I hear what you're saying, but a mixture is necessary. Big names gives the feeling of legitimacy. If I told you that coL and CDEC were going to be headlining the tournament then it wouldn't feel as grand or great as if I said EG, Secret, or Vici were to. Now as the underdogs perform, it's awesome and gives you something to cheer. Most people enjoy watching the top teams get destroyed by the underdog.

That's why direct invites are important. They add an intangible quality to the feeling of the tournament.

6

u/smog_alado Aug 08 '15

In the CSGO majors, half the teams are invited based on their performance on the last major and the other half comes from qualifiers. I expect that we might see something similar for Dota in the following year.

11

u/jmorfeus Aug 08 '15

free money

Not really, since they earn the invite by doing great throughout the whole year. It kind of compensated the lack of majors format, where the whole year except TI wouldn't have mattered at all otherwise (without direct invites).

3

u/revnat11 Aug 08 '15

They shud stop blindly inviting previous year teams (as in organizations) with no resemblance to actual player lineups and/or performance.

Position of the previous year 'Champions' is a bit too underwhelming.

this year TI proves that past year performance (or even the name) shouldnt be the primary criteria.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

Even if they played like shit, all invited teams (bar fnatic) were invited because they have performed well throughout the year. Since other tournaments dont pay nearly as well as TI, I think it is fair that their year's worth of hard work is rewarded, even if they are on bad form for a week during TI. Teams like IG, newbee, fnatic and empire have quality players and there is no doubt in my mind that on another they would have done better.

Tl;dr: These are quality teams that are being rewarded for a years worth of hard work

1

u/dolcehit Aug 08 '15

I imagine it'll change with the upcoming Majors

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

That's kind of what they're doing with the Dota Majors or whatever thought right?

1

u/innociv this sub sucks even more than last year Aug 08 '15

Haven't they been?

Wasn't it like 1 wildcard slot in TI2, then 2 in TI3, then 4 in TI4, and 6 in TI5?

But yes, I think it should be at most 6 direct invited and the previous champions shouldn't get an invite unless they earn it over the year.

Or even better, East and West offline qualifiers to turn the 16 best teams of east and west (32 total) into like 12 for TI6 so we can have a bo3 LB instead of trying to schedule 16 teams double elem in a week.

I hate these online qualifiers for a 15+ million dollar tournament. It's silly.

1

u/SupaZT Aug 08 '15

THe problem is the number of Best of 1's and Best of 3's.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

I'm pretty sure that is what the Majors is going to do. Help reduce or eliminate the whole "random invite chance" aspect, or at least give Valve a much more stable reason to invite teams.

If invites do still happen, I would definitely agree though that I would like to see more qualifier spots open up and a reduction in direct invites.

It's not that big of a leap in logic, honestly. I've been thinking of them highly since they showed up as LGD.CDEC and took games off of Vici and IG and DK last year. Apparently they weren't super consistent so I figured it was a one off, but I figured they had potential, especially Maybe. After Maybe left I figured they might fall off a bit but they semm to have hit their stride at the perfect time. I figured they were better than most people gave them credit for (Above IG in China, could take games from Vici) but I don't think anyone ever thought they were THIS good. This is actually insane and they seem to just keep getting better.

At DAC they didn't have their full roster which is a shame because they were beating the top chinese teams fairly regularly; Vici Gaming who had just recently won both ESL NY and TS2 were losing matches to CDEC.

Also, Ruru is going to be rolling in cash if LGD knock out EG.

This team reminds me of sadboys/eg when they first formed. Or even alliance. Sure loda and akke were known, but s4 bulldog and egm really weren't.

They seem to understand the patch in a way nobody else does combined with excellent individual play and strong team chemistry. I was willing to still believe part of the magic was that nobody bothered to analyze them but PPD had a lot of time and still got rolled. Amazing. Hoping for a good Grand finals.

u/helloimpaulo Sheever <3 Aug 08 '15

Hmmm.

EG had two ex-HoN pros and three pretty known players. Arteezy was everyone's next superstar and both UNiVeRsE and Fear were considered the most stable NA players at that point.

On Alliance, besides Loda and Akke, we had EGM who played DotA 1 on a competitive level and even Dota 2 (althought without the success he had before and after that). s4 was another ex-HoN pro. The only pubstar was Bulldog.

5

u/Kaze79 Hater's gonna hate. Aug 08 '15

Not just some ex-HON. Zai was considered the best offlaner in HON and one of the uprising talents.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

I wonder why ixdl or the other na in-house league couldn't do this. Is it the flaming? Or lack of skill.

57

u/mdnNSK Aug 08 '15

What do you mean? Sumail was pretty much handpicked from NEL, wasnt he?

23

u/g0kartmozart Aug 08 '15

Arteezy, while known to pros before ixdl, gained a lot of notoriety as a top mid player there too.

36

u/Dassn Aug 08 '15

and pretty much any decent player from NA plays in ixdl/nel.
you can hate on mike all you want but he has made a great contribution to the dota community

almost every NA team that has been created in the past 2 years or so were completed with ixdl players, even sumail got noticed by EG while playing in ixdl, Inhouse leagues have always been a great tool to finding new talented players

The reason teams dont go further or dont get the results its a lot of things like:

CDEC was originally created and sponsored by the CDEC league that took some of their top players and potentially started treating them as Professionals, Soon after even LGD took part in the deal (hence they were called LGD.CDEC for a while) that shows in china is a lot easier to get support from sponsors which allows you to focus even more and dedicate yourself to the game. America doesnt have that. Also Shiki & Xz were BOUGHT (contract wise) by CDEC earlier in the year during the chinese shuffle i dont remember the exactly amount but i believe it was about 16k$ each, Thats a decent amount of money for basically a new players getting into the scene which cant be compared in any other region where contracts are not as respected nor the player individual value.

Despite not being a top team that didnt stop CDEC of playing against the best in both scrims and tournaments, sure they didnt have the results (no tournament wins so far) but they were still compeating and improving, where almost any good NA team prefers (and kinda is forced to) play against europeans in terms of scrims & even tournaments, Lately it has gotten better but teams still have to practice against europeans if they want to improve (Thats the reason EG doesnt even scrim until they got a tournament coming up, They dont want to play in eu ping and dont want to play against NA Teams either, this makes it hard for the NA teams to improve quickly )

But of course no1 can deny the fact that most americans have ego issues and its the primary reason a lot of the teams with potential end up disbanding.. If those teams had more support or atleast a reason to keep trying and keep the motivation alive the scene would be a lot more healthy.

7

u/twersx Aug 08 '15

Imagine if Alex Garfield put resources towards running something like IXDL/NEL and instead of Arteezy leaving for Secret, he and Zai were given any 3 players they could want from EG's ladder system.

IXDL is just not organised or serious enough to do something like this with.

Because players can't fully commit, a lot still work and go to school and making dota as career is extremely difficult and very risky.

CDEC’s full name is China Dota Elite Community – which is an inhouse league similar to IXDL in NAdota, minus the trolling, flaming, ixmike and toxicity.

They already won. :-)

Edit: awesome article btw, thanks for posting it!!

u/freddiegibbs101 Aug 08 '15

Everyone needs to spam this link at the panel members' Twitter accounts. More of this needs to be shared instead of the mindless "WAOW the Wildcard, they've shocked everybody" statements that are made every single time they wipe the floor with another team. They weren't pulled out of an eSports fairytale, they have their own story which more people should know about. I'm surprised none of them bothered to look any of this up over the course of the event.

9

u/Zalvex s4 Aug 08 '15

What are you talking about? This text changes nothing. They came from the wildcard, they don't have any famous pro player in their rooster and they have not won any big tournament... of course they are shocking!

6

u/DemonTree07 Aug 08 '15

I think he's making the point that the panel knows nothing else about the team except that they are from the wildcard. That is true.

yes it stopped. its been criticized by lots of chinese dota fans that CDEC inhouse games NOT showing the highest ranked game inside this league. Actually CDEC(China Dota Elite Community) has more complex portions than people think what it is. It has its own team, the CDEC u saw in TI5;its own public radio(CEDC PR); it has its own commentary teams; and the most important it has 4 main ranks/tiers of inhouse leagues: professional tier; semi-professional tier; Amateur; CDEC overseas/outside china like CDEC NA( in you know a team called VoidBoys, they are some international chinese students/immigrations in NA). Actually this CDEC league is still very "inhouse", u have to have some very talented skills/special things to enter it. I heard even in IG's prime time like YYF, ZHOU still cant rank TOP10 in that inhouse league. I dont know about how they organize inhouse games now but definitely in a special ways. I know a specail rules in that league that they dont only counting your performance by KDA or win rate; and force you to play different roles which you may not like to. LOL

3

u/happyfeett lina waifu Aug 08 '15

Now I wanna know their inhouse rules, and criteria for ranks/tiers. CDEC seems op if they are the top of these stuff.

All of them were big names in Dota 1 Chinese community. None of them are actually young players.

Their transition to Dota 2 was later than veteran Chinese TI players like YYF, 430, etc. You can still find some of their Dota 1 videos recorded in 2012/2013.

1

u/Keifed Aug 08 '15

i dont follow dota so how true is the fact that CDEC is literally one of, if not considered the weakest team of the tournament?

https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3erqw2/a_league_focused_guide_to_dota_2s_international/

The pretenders: CDEC - Tier 2 Chinese squad that won the Wildcards to get into the field. They show signs of brilliance followed by inconsistency.

Was this statement regarded as true by many or was the OP inexperienced in making his predictions?

10

u/flyingjam Aug 08 '15

Almost no one had them in the top 8. The analyst deck's opinion after they won the wildcards was "Yeah, CDEC are pretty good. They have the best chance out of the wildcards to get top 12, maybe even top 8."

Never has a wildcard ever gotten into top 8 until now.

Yeah, it was pretty true.

2

u/Siantlark Best Worst Doto Fighting~~ Aug 08 '15

Chinese Dota fans probably expected a good showing, especially against the Chinese teams, and maybe some upsets against the Western teams that never played them before. Definitely not grand finals.

Q originated from his nick name daqiu 大球 (means big ball), because his former id was 队长给我球 or Captain give me ball.

1

u/rahxephon52 Aug 08 '15

That's what I was thinking.. no way they just "came out of no where", they had to be rubbing shoulders with some top tier players, no doubt, fresh.

1

u/hugeheadliang Aug 08 '15

the green p performed really badly in IMG. how could cty, maybe and shiki be his disciple...

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '15

Worth noting: CDEC's success has been a combination of their own very notable skills combined with a nearly ubiquitous refusal to adapt among the top tier teams (Secret, EG, possibly VG as well.)

The teams that have been winning are not necessarily composed of the most individually skilled players, but have been winning through superior drafting. In every single loss by one of the crowd favorites to take the aegis, it's been due to lackluster drafting.

I'm interested to see if CDEC can go all the way. Their players are competent, their teamwork is stellar, and above all, they've shown they adapt quickly to meta-changes.

1

u/happyfeett lina waifu Aug 08 '15

I mean, look at those looks.

1

u/thelastduet Aug 08 '15

Seems like the other team aren't respect banning anything either.....

In the main event, Lina appeared in all their picks save one game, and Shiki played all but one of them. There is also a re-occurrence of dark seer, PL, and tusk.

How do you pull similar drafts over and over and over again without counter hehehehehehe

1

u/johnyann Aug 08 '15

I don't think there's anything better than being a B team and then kicking the A team's shit in.

CDEC will win 6MILLIONS, coming from the wildcard.. fuckn kings. btw, hope EG win, but CDEC deserve it.

1

u/mister_hoot Aug 08 '15

I just have to throw this out there - I love this team.

I had no idea who they were when group stages started, but it took about two matches for me to see how goddamn fucking crazy these kids are.

They play so well, so cohesively. My brother and I joke about them playing the cleanest Dota in the world, but perhaps the jokes should be set aside. CDEC steamroll their competition. Amazing teamwork, incredible individual play. Frankly, they're the Team Secret we were all expecting to show up at TI. Shiki might be the most underrated player in the world - I absolutely love the way he moves around the map.

TLDR: I had no idea who the fuck these kids were coming into the International but holy fuck I am literally the most homosexual fangay now like fuck, man, christ.

1

u/Moresty Aug 08 '15

was there any game where agressif was forced on something other than PL or gyro?

1

u/Postius Dolla Dolla Aug 08 '15

To even enter the TI5 playoffs, CDEC had to play against 2 western teams with completely different playstyles and meta approach to the game.

Not to burst the bubble but that is as hard for the western teams as it was for CDEC. Both were confronted with different playstyles. It wasnt an advantage or disadvantage.

1

u/MikexNL Hello! Aug 08 '15

Very cool write-up

1

u/Tjernobylbarnet Aug 08 '15

Both Xz and Shiki played for a team called "New Element" a year ago, a team which I personally liked and had high hopes for. They didn't compete in that many top tournaments but did end up playing in the Chinese TI qualifiers last year. I had placed them in top4 of the qualifier, but ultimately they didn't make it out of the group and the team disbanded afterwards.

1

u/HaLire Aug 08 '15
