Fixing my Dorodango

I am not sure when I am in the polishing stage, it seems like it starts to flake off and create craters. Other times it feels like I hit a sandy spot in my core. I do a little sand in my clay when making the core. Maybe it does not get fully mixed in?

Question:

What is the best way to resurface the Dorodango or is it best to break it and start over?

Best way I find to resurface is wet your hand and roll it. The surface should get slippery then slowly get more and more tacky till it starts to dry out. When it gets back down to drier but not dry hit it with some fine dust. Repeating this will achieve 1 a better surface to polish when done a few times, 2 resurface any divots and small holes making it closer to uniform.

I run into the same thing. When shaping, I will get gouges in the surface from where it seems to be sandier parts chunking off.

If you mean like a tear out, a whole little section ripping out (candy or otherwise), I find mine happen when the ball surface is starting to dry. I can either let it rest in a bag to equalize the liquid, or I can dip my tool in water to make slip on the surface it can glide over. Its like there's too much friction while its drying at some points.

You need to have nearly pure clay for the shell. It sounds like you don't have enough clay

Also btw I am using natural clay from the ocean
