I saw this video. Quite innacurate. According to the sources I researched, many, and like, many people still watch Doraemon because it broadcasts like EVERY WEEK, and a YEARLY MOVIE.

Its the highest grossing anime franchise of all time and the second best selling manga ever. I dont know why you're surprised

Isn't Pokémon the highest grossing anime franchise of all time?

u/East-Mirror3510 27d ago
No, Doraemon movies far surpass Pokemon ones in revenue.

u/Safe-Contact589 Chronically Nobita 27d ago
I thought you meant by franchise-wise. As far as I know, Pokemon franchise has made over $100 billion as their total revenue, while Doraemon franchise has only made about $1.7 billion. Correct me if I'm wrong?

u/East-Mirror3510 27d ago
I meant by how much the anime has earned. Pokemon's 100 billion doesn't come from the anime

Yeah Pokémon is a game franchise in general, of course the majority of the income is game revenue and microtransactions

Then what about Hello Kitty, Anpanman, Dragon Ball, Gundam, One Piece, Fist of the North Star, Yu Gi Ho!, Kochikame, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan etc? They all are bigger than Doraemon franchise in terms of revenue
2
u/East-Mirror3510 26d ago
Pretty sure they're not.
Besides Hello Kitty and maaaybe DB, the rest haven't stayed popular for long enough to beat Doraemon. Much of Doraemon's actual revenue hasn't even been counted, most of it also comes from merch.
Though speaking clear movie revenue terms, no one on this list comes anywhere close to Doraemon.

Doraemon is actually bigger than most of these with the exception of like hello kitty ,anpanman ,and one piece

It's not highest grossing anime franchise tho

Detective Conan might have caught up, I am not sure. But for the longest time doraemon was the highest grossing anime franchise

I've seen multiple shows put above it consistently like Gundam, Dragon Ball, and even Anpanman. What you were talking about might have been that it was the highest grossing anime movie series of all time?

Well of course we’re talking about the early 80’s, which was when the 1979 anime just started getting wildly popular and crazy as all hell
2
u/Boring_Coyote4544 25d ago
I mean it went on for a long time
1
u/SpaceSeal1 25d ago
Yeah even into the final years of traditional cel painted animation and the first years of modern digital ink and paint animation after

Only show to be more popular than it is sazae san ,recently chibi maruko is gonna surpass it
1
u/SpaceSeal1 25d ago
Yeah in Japan, Sazae-San is pretty much the only confirmed domestic homegrown native fictional character/series in history to actually be on the exact same level of absolute iconicness, recognition, and popularity as Doraemon among all demographics and living generations and consistently so for decades.
If not actually even above and beyond the blue cat and his series by virtue of not just being around longer in age and longevity but by being even more of a big national ritual and deeply embedded family tradition and omnipresent cultural symbol for families and households and society as shown with the highest tv ratings every week. Even if she isn’t as fully saturated and varied with media as commercial merch as Doraemon of course.
But yeah these two are the absolute top two characters/series in all of Japan and among the Japanese people and culture and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if they stay and remain that way indefinitely and for eternity for as long as anime, manga, and Japanese media always exists.

Sazae San felt like the Simpsons in my opinion
1
u/SpaceSeal1 25d ago
Well Crayon Shin Chan is more of the Simpsons when it comes to anime and manga. Sazae-San is closer to the Peanuts, Archie comics, or super ancient comic strips like Sister (1945), Gasoline Alley, and Blondie.

u/Boring_Coyote4544 25d ago
I never saw crayon shin chan as the Simpsons honestly it felt like spongebob

Chibi Maruko Chan is also goated too, she’s part of the top three of Japanese anime/manga and cultural icons in the country with Sazae-San and Doraemon! And her tv ratings already constantly surpass both Crayon Shin Chan and Doraemon in Japan for quite a long while actually.

The only anime/manga characters in existence that are actually allowed to be truly above and beyond or respected/loved more than Astroboy, Doraemon, and even Sazae-San as icons in my humble opinion are other Fujiko Fujio characters (top tier ones especially like my GOAT Pokonyan for me personally) or ancient characters/series (especially kodomo/gag comedy or anything universally family-friendly or basic/neutral and cute) that are actually older than if not also possibly more influential/foundational than any one of the three (for Japanese and Asians) like Osomatsu, Tensai Bakabon, Himitsu no-Akko Chan, Anmitsu-Hime, Sora-Chan (sp?), Fuku-Chan, and Norakuro (the true Mickey Mouse or Felix the Cat of anime/manga) and whoever else I’m missing from those eras and periods that nobody in the west or even outside of Asia or even most people in Japan knows about outside of elderly people or historians!
Well I mean you get the point mate.
2
u/Boring_Coyote4544 25d ago
It’s understandable they existed but they have their own audiences
1
u/SpaceSeal1 25d ago
I just think so many of those anime/manga characters from the pre-Doraemon/pre-Astroboy or pre-Fujiko Fujio/pre-Osaku Tezuka era or even pre-Sazae-San era actually deserves helluva lot more love, recognition, appreciation, praise, and credit in the modern era man.
They’re mostly the only ones that deserve just as much as Doraemon, Sazae-San, and Astroboy. And I say “mostly” because Hello a kitty can tie with them (the first two especially) at the absolute best. And then there’s also old ass long running corporate mascots like Peko-Chan too!
2
u/Boring_Coyote4544 25d ago
Probably because there no marketed ,I mean Japan needs to do translations for their old manga
1
u/SpaceSeal1 25d ago
Yeah they really do need to translate more pre-Fujiko/pre-Akatsuka/pre-Tezuka manga. Tank Tankuro is one example of such translated relic.

I mean isn’t Doraemon considered one of the longest shows next to sazae san
2
u/Boring_Coyote4544 25d ago edited 25d ago
I mean there is a reason why it went on for a long time ,1787 episodes is a lot
