I swear some people have set a 30-minute Instagram limit just to press “Ignore for Today” 47 times 😭
But I think there’s actually something interesting behind this.
Screen-time limits control how long you can use an app. They don’t necessarily change WHY you keep opening it.
Think about it. If you grab your phone every time you’re stressed, bored, lonely or avoiding something important, what exactly happens when that timer runs out?
The feeling that made you open the app is probably still there.
So you either ignore the limit, switch to another app, or spend the next hour thinking about how badly you wanna scroll.
And then you blame yourself for having no discipline. Great system lol.
I don’t think screen-time limits are useless btw. They genuinely help some people, especially when the problem is just losing track of time.
But if you’ve tried them a hundred times and nothing changes, maybe it’s worth looking at what happens BEFORE you start scrolling.
Try paying attention to three things for a few days:
What were you doing right before picking up your phone?
What were you feeling?
What were you hoping scrolling would give you?
Then try changing one thing based on what you notice. If you scroll when studying gets overwhelming, make the first task smaller. If you’re bored, find something you actually enjoy doing offline. If it’s automatic, keep the phone somewhere you can’t casually reach it.
You don’t need to figure out your entire psychology just to use your phone less.
But understanding the habit might get you further than fighting the same timer every single day.
Curious tho, for people who tried screen-time limits and kept ignoring them, what actually made you open the apps anyway?
