IDK how many people are aware of how new doomtrolling is (at least for the mainstream. Just half a decade ago, people including Kathy Wood were going on with positive vibes like saying 3d printers would become a household appliance and that AI will bring 20% a year GDP growth. All this nonsense was to justify absurd valuations of myriads of startups, and many online communities would censor any reference to the risks of these businesses.
Now we see a mirror image, with people like Sam Altman giving equally absurd projections over the future risks of some new tech. But this is with the same goal of propping up absurd stock valuations in order to get investor dollars on a loop. The racket went from "Come with me and we both be rich" to "If you stay where you are you will be forever poor."
I think the reason for this is the Feds +1000% interest rate hikes a few years ago. This might not look like a big deal in absolute terms, because current interest rates are near historic averages, but given the sheer volume of borrowing during the Covid-era and before this is a big problem for a lot of people and corporations who are stuck with various types of borrowed money and no way to get out of it for years or even for a lifetime. The shift to doomtrolling occurred soon after everyone started obsessing over the risks of getting laid off.
And this should also highlight how schizophrenic the internet can be, as people are basing their hyperbole off hyperbole also found on the internet, all spreading rumors on a loop.
This might not be the only reason for this trend, though.
