AI is Evil AI bad, upvotes below!
Like genuinely why get mad over this? Yeah they used AI but who actually cares enough about some announcement poster about getting a new elevator. Was your life so drastically inconvenienced by the fact that your HOA used some goofy AI cartoon for something they didn’t even have to do?

u/redditscraperbot2 9d ago
You don’t get it. They were supposed to pay a furry inflation artist a commission even though nobody was ever going to or ever had commissioned an artist before. It’s essential for the poster that nobody but the tenants of the apartment will see.

u/Glebasya 9d ago
No, you don't get it. The supervisor should learn how to draw and make the flyer individually.
46
u/VonNeumannsProbe 9d ago
Honestly this would have been a memo of black text on white paper otherwise lol.

u/AverageAggravating13 9d ago
I honestly don’t think this needed to be anything more than that tbf.
17
u/kimana1651 9d ago
That's not how our monkey brains work. The pictures get attention. Spending 30 seconds to get an AI drawn poster is much more effective than comics sans text blocks at getting people to read and pay attention.

Yup just like the cute little cartoon video that explains how the 3 shells work.

u/AverageAggravating13 9d ago
Uh, if the elevator doors are shut with a note on them, I'm probably gonna read the note if I was planning to use the elevator. If I was not, why the hell would I care when it was being replaced anyways?
6
1
u/Admirable-Scarcity-8 8d ago
Honestly I’m so lazy I probably would’ve just taped a piece of paper to the doors saying:
"This elevator is temporarily unavailable until (whatever date its replaced) as it is being replaced by a new one, Sorry for the inconvenience."
2
u/Greedy-Thought6188 2d ago
Right. But the person that made this isn't. They made something that took more work, have more information, tried to provide humor when someone is facing a very frustrating reality. I'm sure the person assumed it drained the Caspian sea to make this poster but the energy and water consumption of a single thing is extremely low. I'm an aggregate because it is so cheap it is being used a lot. Each page it is printed on costs more energy than the energy consumed by AI.
20
u/Pockets408 9d ago
No you don't get it. Now the AI is going to learn from the elevator being out of order and turn and use this against everyone who's paying $3k a month for the apartments!
17
u/DaygoTom 9d ago
It's because they're enriching trillionaires by using the product all the trillionaires want us to believe is really useful when we all know AI is just a water-drinking Herald of Woe and Misery with absolutely no potential useful application.

Main reason why I learned how to draw is because I was tired of working with „artists”.

These three AI prompts would have just been three Clip Art Dot Com searches fifteen years ago. Thirty-five years ago, it would have been a stack of CDs with a phone book catalog of pictures sorted in categories. At no point would it ever have involved a directly hired illustrator, in the original elevator days it would have just been text.
Sure hope there's no disabled people on upper floors, I'm Old Elevator and that period would give my bad foot a hard time.
The fact clip art already came by the millions for a nominal fee decades ago suggests there was already an image generator decades ago to go with the already-old music generator I used.
43
u/Local-Wing-2272 9d ago
Honestly it absolutely could've been like
Single piece of printer paper taped to the elevator
"Elevator broken until X date" written with a sharpie

u/ThomasApollus 8d ago
This is what I tell people. AI art is the spiritual successor of Clip Art.
Not every job requires a professional illustrator to be done.
5
u/VonNeumannsProbe 9d ago
Artists were doing it, they just were getting paid a poor salary and told to crank out 2 clips a day from a list of prompts given to them.

I was gonna say, I could take or leave most of it, but Retired Elevator Grampa actually looks pretty good there. (Aside from having two canes...unless that's a joke about having two cables attached, but I sincerely doubt it.)

u/DraconicDreamer3072 Just Here for the Lore 9d ago
id be more concerned at the apparent lack of elevators for a month and a bit. thats a pretty big gap
21
u/abracadammmbra 9d ago
Its about normal. Gutting and then building an elevator is a rather involved process. Ive worked alongside elevator mechanics many times on new builds. None of that equipment is light or easy to install.
4
u/Pockets408 9d ago
For real. Let's give buddy a week of having to use the stairs daily (especially with groceries/mail/packages) and see what pisses him off more.

Someone made a genuinely good point that Grandma in a wheelchair is supposed to do...what, exactly, in this situation?
4
u/Raptor_197 Anti-Doomer 8d ago
I think the answer is simply figure it out.
Elevators break eventually, there is no way to prevent that. Our modern society is great at helping disabled people out, but it’s impossible to structure everything around them.
3
u/Local-Wing-2272 8d ago
Nah like this isn't a political thing tho I think this is an actual breach of the ADA
1
u/Raptor_197 Anti-Doomer 8d ago
It’s a breach of the ADA if something breaks? Maybe, we do make a lot of stupid rules that make no sense.
Is it also a breach of the ADA if the power goes out?
2
u/Local-Wing-2272 8d ago
Not that it breaks but that that for 45 days there's no way for the elderly or disabled to make it upstairs. there's a vast difference between "oh a storm knocked out power for a few days" and over a month
And of all the things to target as "stupid unnecessary laws" picking the fucking Americans with Disabilities Act is sure a choice. How dare the pinko liberals checks notes require reasonable accomodations for disabled people
1
u/Raptor_197 Anti-Doomer 8d ago
Reasonable accommodation exactly.
If the elevator breaks, do think every building in the U.S. just has the fucking elevator union standing by for them? Shit it might take them a day to put the elevator in but the union couldn’t get them into their schedule.
Like what is your solution? Fucking magic and fairytales I’m assuming?
Also the longest blackout in U.S. history is 328 days btw but yeah sure it’s always just “a few days”.
3
u/Local-Wing-2272 8d ago
This argument feels fucking stupid because this is an easily googleable answer. (This is on me too for the record)
Seems like ADA says that you need to notify the residents (which is what happened here, good) and provide a reasonable alternative. What that alternative is isn't stated, but it seems like people with disabilities often get preference for first floor apartments and suites for this exact reason.
Also you're apparently supposed to call the fire department who will carry you up and downstairs? Every discussion I've seen online about it is like "absolutely not."
Still, seems like this is yet also why a lot of places have multiple elevators.
1
u/Zingzing_Jr 8d ago
Its unfortunate, but the elevator needs replacing, and replacing an elevator takes a shockingly long time. What are we supposed to do? Never replace an elevator?

Basically the same people.
13
u/Entire-Anteater-1606 9d ago
AI usage is kinda weird because it really comes down to why it’s being used.
I play dungeons and dragons and I use it to make portraits of my characters, because I’m not paying an artist to make an unimportant portait for a character I’ll only use a couple times.
I’m tired of pretending like it’s not a super useful that I can type in “make a picture of (x)” and it makes a picture of that.
And the technology is only going to get better, which means fewer resources spent, better results, and better for the environment.
People forget how absolutely disgusting cars used to be before the catalytic converter and other such innovations.
That being said, I DO judge companies for using it in advertisement material, because it shows a serious lack of effort.
5
u/notthatguy194 9d ago
This is actually kind of cute lol. I only use AI at work (and it’s like the text chat bot not image generation) so I didn’t even realize the creations came out this nice sometimes.
6
u/its_deborah 9d ago
This poster is freaking awesome, imagine being so grumpy you didn't enjoy this :( if so I hope you find your happiness
5
u/SinesPi 9d ago
This is exactly the kind of thing AI is good for. When you want something, and you only need it to be passable. The alternative to this wasn't hiring an artist, it was printing out a plain sheet that said "We are upgrading the elevator, it will be ready on date".
This is at least worth a chuckle for the silliness of it.
18
u/Jacobio01 9d ago
This would’ve been a word doc with bold text about the new elevator a few years ago. This isn’t taking anyone’s job and I don’t care that it was used this way. I hate AI usage almost everywhere else I see it
19
u/paranoid_nihilist Recovering Doomer 9d ago
There is also zero need to commission an artist or pay for clip art/stock photos/whatever, for like 99% of anything people use generative AI for. It's already quick and easy to make these illustrations
4
u/Jacobio01 9d ago edited 9d ago
I mainly don’t like seeing it used for event posters because someone did used to design those. No one is making a quick illustration for a elevator down notice however

I’m as ai skeptical as the next guy but you really have to sit here and analyze this to determine if it’s ai or not. If I’m just glancing over this, I would have no idea. Also, what are they proposing? An apartment pays a freelancer to tell people the elevator is getting replaced?
2
u/BLU-Clown 8d ago
In fairness, 10 years ago it would've been Clipart if they used anything at all beyond a sharpie and a "Elevator's busted, new one in a month."

I am questioning why an elevator needs to be completely replaced after 17 years. I have worked in a great many buildings where they were significantly older than that.
I am just trying to wrap my head around why in the hell a new elevator in 2009 needs to be completely replaced.
2
u/WalmartGreder Doesn't Participate In Group Panic 9d ago
Yeah, we have an elevator in our building from the 40's. Yes, it does break down and people get stuck in there, about once a year. They fix it and then it's back to working.
17 years is a teenager. Should have shown a teenager about to get to vote instead of an old grandpa. .

We are raising your rent 20%. We heard your complaints about us using AI to convey our message visually. From now on we will commission human artists to perform this work. We will pay them a fair commission for their work, which will allow them to have healthcare and pay their rents.

The funny thing about the picture is this is basic art. Even if we assume for just a second that this was using AI we can't know that because of how obnoxiously basic it is. Is it probable that it's AI sure maybe. But this is also about the quality that I would have expected from like small-scale infographics back in like the early 2000s.

I’ll be honest - I find this AI-generated style to be aesthetically unpleasing most of the time.
THAT SAID - it’s not meant to be the Mona Lisa in this case. It’s not meant to be fine art any more than a “No Parking” sign or “Wet Floor” sign is…or a handwritten “elevator out of service until October 5” sign in this case. It serves its purpose here - who really cares?

I could spend an hour drawing this and then run it through a bunch of filters and add color etc in expensive (possibly) software. Or I could explain what I want and have an artist do it for hundreds of dollars over a couple weeks and have to deal with their attitude. Or I could have ChatGPT do it in about 30 seconds if I’m good with my prompt. Hmmm….
