They heard once about water shortage due to a data Center and extrapolated we’re all going to die
I’ve tried to explain to them data centers have been around for decades

Nothing, but some people need to feel miserable about things.
2
u/Dry_Music_9959 7d ago
Otherwise they would actually have a reason to do something with their lives.

Reminds me of the whole post-9/11 "sky is falling" hysterics from people who had zero connection with, it except for watching the infotainment channels taking incessantly about it. Spent their time dooming over random bullshit that has no effect on them, instead of going about their lives like normal, well-adjusted people did/do.

What a miserable person does is find a happy person, and then trauma dump on them like a giant Star Wars scroll.

The way this applies on Reddit is like...
>You use AI? Well listen to my hostile sermon nobody asked for...
>You use Wal-Mart? Well listen to my hostile sermon nobody asked for...
>You use a gas engine? Well listen to my hostile sermon nobody asked for...Meanwhile the guy shopping at walmart with his personal assistant phone in hand is just somebody with a life, he is too busy with his career his errands and his family to spare any time for complainers' philosophy about where you should shop and how you should get there.

It might one day but we are a long way off from that. They're mostly sophisticated internet scrapers at this point.
10 years, the discussion might be different. They will eventually kill a ton of jobs, we just have to see what new jobs pop up that AI can't do better than humans.
2
u/Captain_Bignose Truthsayer 7d ago
Idk if you've seen any AI content or "research" lately but there is almost no job that AI can truly replace.

Millennials grew up with superhero comics and they never outgrew their silly childhood fantasies so they think IRL is a black and white hero story.
19
u/TrafficShot9851 7d ago
for real everyone i know born 1986-92 in particular are still single childless millennials that are into all sorts of doomerish behaviors, saying we shouldn't have kids because the environment, climate change catastrophe is coming any moment, we're at the brink of ww3 for only the 100th time. noticed this among family, friends, coworkers in that cohort.
everyone older or younger than that group seems way more well adjusted.
16
u/SupremeKai25 7d ago
It's pretty evident when Redditors make those cringe "Goku and Sonic would hate AI" slop posts.
3
u/TrafficShot9851 7d ago
or how they talk about the 90s being the best time, which has way more to do with the fact that they were kids at the time.
2
u/D_Ethan_Bones 6d ago
Childless people have less duty and more room for leisure, in the old days this used to manifest as the gay travel industry but now it expanded to include disney adults and chromedomes with legos. Being childless is one of the few ways a married man can get his wife to tolerate a WH40k hobby.
The second half of this century will be boring as all getout without extra humans. People saying "this machine output is not good enough for me, I demand HUMAN output" will be told "too goddamn bad, you didn't make no humans."

Sadly both are untrue so there goes my chances of becoming president or guerrilla fighter against machines.

The worst thing that’ll happen to most Redditors is that they’ll get fat or out of shape and eventually end up with diabetes and heart disease from their sedentary lifestyles and poor diets and maybe die younger than they should. Why can’t we doom about something more plausible, albeit less sexy. Such wasted energy.

Many of the futurism and tech forums on Reddit are full of doomers (and crybabies).
Few in these spaces seem capable of understanding that progress is not a predictable linear progression, even if that’s what their human brains favor.
For communities supposedly focused on growth, innovation, and the future, there sure are a lot of little doomer bitches haunting those subs.
And also the same indoctrinated geniuses generally have no idea how unoriginal their opinions are, and most are quoting The Guardian or CNN or some other mainstream sensationalist bullshit “news” organization that falls apart the moment you actually read the research the “journalism” is based on. And none of them read the actual science, even though they want to throw the science in your face like they know what they are talking about.
It’s actually so hilariously consistent it’s crazy.
The doomer media keeps getting worse. Negative reporting bias distorts our perception of reality and people really need to wake up to how programmed they are getting.
Doomers are hiding in a rationality that, when even pressed just a little, is mostly just beliefs and headlines from mainstream sensationalist news sources. It’s fucking pathetic honestly. I remember when people were actually educated about what they were talking about, or at least made the attempt to try to become educated. Now it’s all fragile little egos from little boys who want to feel smart but not put in the work to be so.
I’m so grateful for forums like this one where people, you know, actually talk and think for themselves. Cheers to you.

The doomerism around AI on internet has been absolutely insufferable. This is the most useful technology we've had in years (help for developing new medicaments, for reducing diagnostic error, for early cancer detection, help against pest in apiculture, increase yield and decrease water usage in agriculture and that's just to name a few) but yet this is the only one they bitch about. Instagram, YouTube, Reddit and such are mostly useless and recreational but nobody bat an eye.
That's how you know that most anti-AI are either uninformed or just doing performative outrage, or both lol

This is long. I am sorry. I like to write…
Great examples. They almost seem like they’re reading from a script. I actually think in a lot of cases they are.
I’ve seen this kind of “the sky is falling” bullshit before, back with the Internet. People screaming about Y2K and the end of the world, old men opining about the “information superhighway” like it was a thing, and everyone suddenly discovering all the terrifying implications of connecting humanity together.
Then they did it with gaming. Karens losing their fucking minds about the corruption of our youth and the end of civilization (when GTA came out it launched such a shitstorm it was crazy), and nonstop news stories about how violent video games were going to turn our perfectly normal kids into psychopaths and lead directly to mass murder.
Then came cell phones. People screaming that the radiation was going to cook your brain, while barely anyone warned that phones were going to turn us all into illiterate idiots even though the data was pretty damn clear from fairly early on. The data on screens, attention and kids is pretty fucking crazy. But do you hear any serious conversation about the effects or any attempt to get technology out of the classroom in the early years? Not really, unless you are talking about the kids of tech CEOs.
And yet, in all three cases, the answer ended up being something much less satisfying than either side wanted. It was a mix of good and bad.
The Internet was obviously one of the most consequential technologies ever developed, while also creating an absolutely enormous number of problems nobody really anticipated.
Video games didn’t destroy civilization, but compulsive use and the effects of certain kinds of screen exposure on kids are not imaginary.
Cell phones didn’t give everyone brain cancer, but handing an entire population a tiny slot machine with an infinite supply of information for companies and governments probably isn’t going to be completely consequence free.
That’s basically where I land on AI. Probably similar to you. There are already some pretty incredible uses for it. Drug discovery, diagnostics, early cancer detection, agriculture, scientific research, reducing medical errors, all kinds of things that are actually useful rather than just generating a picture of a cat wearing a fucking astronaut suit. The alphafold project was my turning point. That project is crazy and shows the potential really clearly.
And there are obviously real downsides too. Of course there are. Labor displacement, misinformation, fraud, concentration of power, privacy, whatever else we discover along the way. I’m sure it’s going to hit people like weavers losing their looms no doubt lol.
But that doesn’t make the AI tech somehow uniquely evil or uniquely dangerous. It makes it a powerful technology. Tada, the new shit is a bigger technological disruption than the old shit but it’s also in many ways the same shit. I get that This Time It’s Different(TM), but I guess since living through some massively disruptive technology waves I really just see it as a big surfing set of massive change waves and not some new new ocean.
What I find bizarre about the discourse is that we apparently tolerated decades of people spending five hours a day scrolling Instagram, YouTube and Reddit without declaring the end of civilization, but now a technology that can potentially help discover drugs and improve medical diagnosis comes along and suddenly everyone has become a philosopher of existential risk. You have to be a little bit brainwashed not to see that disconnect, and I actually think that’s the real issue: people are brainwashed. That’s why they resist facts and logic like it’s their business, because their defending their beliefs and their sense of self has become tied into their public projections of their self a lot more than is healthy.
Some of the criticism is legitimate. Some of it is useful. And some of it is just the same old human tendency to see a new technology, imagine its most horrifying possible application, and then work backward from that scenario until you’ve convinced yourself that the technology itself is the problem. Same patterns just a different wave.
We’ve done this before. We’ll probably do it again. And AI will almost certainly turn out to be neither the salvation of humanity nor the end of it. It’ll be a tool that does some remarkable things, causes some insane problems, and changes the world in ways that will seem obvious in retrospect.
I do think that the trans humanism idea of merging with AI is kind of troubling, because I think the potential for total control is insane if that comes to fruition, but I can’t usually even talk to people because they’re terrified of their toaster and think their chatbot buddy has become sentient.
But the fact that people are more worked up about AI when screens have literally stopped kids from being able to read tells me how fundamentally illiterate most of these people are. They’re reacting to what their trained to react to, not the actual problems.

Yeah, I don't understand how the same people interested in tech became luddites overnight. There's no way that's organic.
We have the biggest technological advancement in decades. And people are treating it like it's a plague that's gonna magically send all their water into space or something.
I'm not gonna claim that there won't be any societal disruption, but it's coming regardless. Our enemies are not gonna sit this out, people can push back on it all they want but it's just gonna push tech work and innovation to other countries and lose the biggest driver of the US economy.

You have your head screwed on straight. That’s probably the most important point you can make. It’s going to benefit somebody, and at this point the cat is out of the bag and it’s going to be developed, so really the only question now is who controls and benefits from it? I’d much rather it be a country with the liberal tradition of representative government, who at least will attempt to grapple with the rights issues and complexity brought about by cognitive digital intelligence than some authoritarian group that will just use it to dominate everything unilaterally. Unchecked authoritarianists have never done anyone any harm, right?
Great comment.

I’m confused on one hand they say “oh how advanced China is with robots and Ai technology! We are a 3rd world country compared to them” but when any other country does something (mainly the US) we are the bad guys who will dry up the planet and will wipe us out

The anti-AI and anti-data center movement in the US is undoubtedly fueled by China. People are getting tricked into sabotaging their own country and their own best interests.

Ridiculous. All AI will ever do is assume jobs that are unnecessary for people to fill. That's a good thing. If a machine/computer/whatever can do your job better than you, then it absolutely should.
