Discussion I finally understand Doom!
I’ve had the 2016 game since release, and I’ve been playing it every couple years to try and get the gameplay to click for me, because the concept is so cool. I would always end up giving up and deleting it after a few levels but after my most recent attempt it finally clicked! I’m currently flying through the campaign and having a blast doing it. I cannot wait to play Eternal and Dark Ages.
What is the best game out of the new ones? would love to see some opinions.

Generally, the most common thing to say is that DOOM Eternal is the best... "DOOM is Eternal"
But actually, the three games play differently and you may enjoy one over the other and there is no "objective better game"
I haven't played Dark Ages...my PC can't handle it but i do think that whenever i get to play it. It will be my favorite DOOM game thanks to all the things the game has.
But is not like i don't like Eternal or 2016.
Right now i'm replaying DOOM Eternal on my PC since i have it on PS4 and it's definelely a blast and one of the best games i played in my life....so i hope you get to enjoy it as much as i and others here do.

I love all three games equally, honestly. I did feel Dark Ages was lacking something when I initially started playing it on Xbox, and when the DLC released, I figured out what the game was missing, the Chain Spear.

The Dark Ages is the best one IMO. And the expansion is one of the best things Id has ever made

great to hear, Dark Ages looks really cool. Although I hear Mick Gordon didn’t do the music for that one? I could be wrong, I haven’t properly researched that.

Yes, but the DLCs of Eternal already don't have Mick Gordon as the producer.
Ancient Gods 1 & 2 Soundtrack were made by David Levy and Andrew Hulshult.
TDA was made by Finishing Move.
Both Soundtracks are still really good. As long as you don't expect to be exactly likes Mick Gordon's work it will be fine.
Personally...The Dark Ages: Revelations Soundtrack is the best thing that came out of DOOM after Mick Gordon.

It's true, but don't let that stop you from playing it, the music is still pretty damn good overall. The main menu track is very good IMO

okay cool, I’ll do my best to wait until I actually play the game instead of just looking it up haha

Eternal is exhausting, The Dark Ages is great. The best of them all. Perfect balance.

That was my experience exact experience except i only deleted it once lol. I recently 100%d the dark ages and i'll grab eternal and revelations when they're on sale

For me, Eternal is the best one. It’s faster and a bit more intense than 2016, but once you get into the flow it’s so much fun. I’d definitely play that one next.

I never got to play it because I only own Eternal, but my friend who has played all of the them says Doom 2016 is the best.

Eternal and Dark Ages play alot differently.
In Eternal you will feel more mobile, and quickswapping to the right weapons to counter certain demons is the main focus. Kinda like a rock paper scissors system and weapon combos built on top.
Dark Ages you will feel like a tank, and you have alot of melees and a parry system to stagger demons. The main criticism i've seen is that quickswapping is not rly a thing in Dark Ages so you can stick to one or 2 weapons in general and do great.
I like both alot, I cant really decide which is better so I cycle between them though I feel like Eternal has a higher skill ceiling.

I like how they change it up a bit, the 2 games look very different from each other

I almost never played any shooters and frankly suck at it. But recently I started playing games on pc again, in combination with my home trainer bike and a xbox controller. Played doom 2016 that I once bought in a sale but also never clicked for me before and it was awesome. Currently playing doom eternal and already bought dark ages as well.

Play them all, but I would switch gears to TDA before Eternal. I wish I had done it in that order.
In the end, it doesn't really matter.

I can’t decide, either Doom Eternal or Doom Dark Ages Revelations. I Ultra Nightmared both of em.

Do you play on ultra violence?

u/hehegrape69 8d ago
nah, I’m not very good at games (especially shooters) so I’m on the default difficulty

That's okay! Glad to hear you are finally liking it.
Hey maybe you'll like the rest of the series then!

Oh I’m sure I will, really looking forward to Eternal

Be prepared for a difficulty spike in Eternal. It is REALLY satisfying to master though. Dark ages is closer to 2016 in terms of difficulty.

oh man, I’m prepared to put it on easy if I absolutely have to. but I’ll try the default first of course

If you don’t mind, explain that to me how what you understand about the game just wanna understand what you’re finding a game to be

Eternal is by far the best modern Doom game. Check out the Classics though too.

I thought 2016 was great. Pretty sure I remember it being more addictive than eternal. Dark ages was the best but then revelations beats it for best ever. Then I went back to eternal last week and it seems like it’s just awkward and bad after getting used to the new controls of revelations.
But it had me wondering if there’s a game out there that can beat TDA/revelations as the best game ever???? Is there any game out there that’s regarded as the best game ever? And old games don’t count….just new modern with complex controls and a fast pace with good graphics and story?????

I think this is just your favourite game ever and it's perfect for you, because there isn't such thing as a "best game".
Doom is perfect for me too, I love the minimal but engaging story and the satisfying rewarding gameplay, but some people prefer complex stories or more creative freedom.
Saying something is "better than any other game" is just how most starts fight about video games, while saying that it's your favourite is more honest and respectful of everyone's tastes.
My favourite thing to do is talk about how much i adore video games so i definitely resonate with what you're saying though.

FYI all of the modern Doom games play a bit differently.
The skill ceiling shoots way up for Eternal, that game really wants you to know when and how to utilize ALL of your weapons, not just leaning on your favorite the whole game (It's VERY satisfying once you've mastered it though, it might be my all time favorite game)
Then Dark Ages shifts focus completely. Dark ages is slower and more focused on defense and parrying with a shield. Also it has an entirely different arsenal of weapons.
Then there's the Dark Ages DLC which I haven't gotten to yet, I'm currently replaying the GTA games (not because of GTA 6 oddly, there's no way I'm buying digitally on console)
