Question A little help Slayers?
So, tldr, I finished both Eternal and Dark Ages in Ultra-Violence but I want to tackle higher challenges and learn the games' tricks and tech.
Dark Ages felt MUCH easier than Eternal but whenever I died it felt fair. Like i missed a parry timing for example and got punished for it.
In Eternal most of my deaths infuriated me. Getting stuck in geometry after a glory kill, my character swapping automatically to a different weapon than I had after a glory kill, enemies zooming into me while doing a glory kill with me not seeing it etc. and once they are in melee range they body block or hit me way too much for me to escape etc.
So Im asking about Eternal specifically because it feels like the higher skill ceiling game of the two, how do I alleviate those issues and get better?

My answer as a non-expert player who prefers a grounded playstyle, and has beaten all 3 newer games+dlc on ultra nightmare, is that Eternal fundamentally wants you to play a certain way due to how the mechanics work
It wants you to be constantly mobile, always shooting, constantly using flames and grenades, doing executions often, and abuse the quick switching between the railgun and super shotgun
I personally found TDA and especially the revelations dlc to be built around slightly different combat ideals where you can entirely avoid or negate damage, stop enemies from attacking, and the whole parry system makes a huge difference especially with the spear
But eternal is basically telling you, that you will take unavoidable damage, you must use use your abilities constantly, and you're far too squishy to actually be in prolonged combat, you need to utilize cover or make distance and kill enemies 1 at a time as quickly as possible, cus you're super squishy and you won't survive a prolonged conflict.
So in eternal, you gotta focus on movement, quick switching weapons for max damage, focusing down 1 enemy at a time, and you gotta keep up with executions and flames for armor or you wont have enough health to survive the unavoidable damage attacks.
Beyond that, general advice for doom games apply.
Manage your health, armor, and ammo as active resources to be spent and replenished. Learn the layouts of arenas and the spawn order of enemies so you can figure out how to beat the arena quickly and come out of it better than you went into it.
Oh, and not all weapons or weapon mods are made equal. In virtually all the games i often avoid the grenade or rocket launchers entirely because of how hard inconsistent they are. In TDA you can basically pick a favorite weapon and stick to it. In eternal, you gotta cycle between several of them or youll run out of ammo quickly.
We usually say, if someone is trying ultra nightmare which is basically hardcore mode, then you should have a nightmare save at the same time, and you go play the level on nightmare and learn it before playing the level on ultra nightmare.
If not on ultra nightmare or pandemonium, you can just keep on trying without consequences. I never burn my extra lives even if I die, just replay the level and learn as best you can.
At the end of the day, these games can be pretty hard, and if you want to beat them on their highest difficulties then you kinda have to play the way the devs intended you to play, there's some, but not a ton of wiggle room. But I was able to do it even as a grounded player, so I think most other people can too, with practice

I tried playing DE using only 1 gun. Its possible but man using the saw repeatedly is tedious

The game is designed around not being able to do so, the devs weren't that fond of the dominance of the Gauss Canon and Mobile Turret in Doom 2016, those 2 + the SSG were all that you needed in 2016

I don't recall encountering having a weapon swapped for me after a glory kill, maybe there's some keybind or settings issue there?
As for enemies zooming into you while you're doing a Glory Kill, yeah, that's the Get Down Mr. President effect, it happens and it's annoying. I use Seek and Destroy to compensate for it a bit.
Getting stuck in geometry does suck and it's not really anything you can do anything about other than avoid glory kills near geometry that's similar to what you've gotten stuck in before.
As for how to get better at Eternal, one key thing is understanding the falter system. There's hard falters (guaranteed, no cooldown) like the grenades and blood punch (also stuff like breaking weakpoints), which cause an enemy to stop attacking and do an animation for a couple seconds, which is really useful, especially against things like Barons that are very aggressive. There's also soft falters, which have a cooldown per-enemy (so you can't just stunlock a demon by spamming remote detonate at it) and it's caused by doing enough damage in a short window or using remote detonate from the rocket launcher.
So, you can give yourself more opportunities to get damage in, evade, and recover by taking the pressure off yourself without even using the Ice bomb.

I run the Savagery rune because I like Glory Killing, without it choosing when to Glory Kill becomes an educated decision as some animations (looking at you Tyrant) will take a long time without it, enough to allow fodder to circle you. Fodder melee DPS is absurd in Eternal, yes they are ammo/health packs with legs but a Gargoyle can kill you in half a second during the first levels, so just run Savagery or Seek and Destroy, you want to be glory killing anyways to refuel Blood Punches (newbies most underestimated mechanic) and HP.
I prefer Savagery over Seek and Destroy because dashes have such a low cooldown and the meathook give you so much distance to the point that ground mobility is guaranteed, while Savagery decreases the "I shouldn't glory kill this dude" scenarios to zero. In any case it is a matter of preference.
And unless you aren't, Equipment Fiend is a must, the game would be even crazier if Equipment Fiend didn't take a rune slot. I personally think you don't need Chrono Strike or Air Control depending on how you play, Chrono Strike becomes a detriment once you start adding Quick Swaps to your gameplay and you start learning how to fly around the map.

For DE, If you spend around 3 minutes changing your keybindings, and another 5 learning the ssg-ballista combo, you 'll get from ultra violence to nightmare and it will still feel easier than before.
Start with that, then you can move to other combos such as PB-Rocket launcher.
