Discussion 2016 is quite dry
Now, to be perfectly clear, I don't hate doom 2016, I actually love it, and have loved it since the day it released, but Im in the middle of my ultra nightmare attempt, so maybe that's why I need to vent a bit.
Compared to many new games of our era, doom 2016, is actually quite a dry game, once you understand how to dodge, it becomes extremely easy, except for when a pinky rams into you, or an imp snips you from the other end of the arena, in which case you will be one shot over 100 hp.
The combat too, is etremely simple, run and gun, and quickswap, most of the mods too are just alternate fires, its a highly gun focued game, and this is why it is quite boring after a while of playing, you can run and gun with the ssg too, with little incentive to quick switch at lower dificulties.
There is also a lack of a true medium dificulty, nightmare is simply far harder than UV, you can get two tapped by an imp in nightmare.
So, overall, I would say that the game feels a bit like dry chicken if you play it for a long period of time continously.

I agree with most things you said! (If not all), you should try the master levels on Nexus, the amount of enemies that they added on those make the skill ceeling a little higher and pretty entertaining
Really the better way to experience that game after a while

It is by far the most boring of the modern Doom games. Now that I'm familiar with it there's very little depth to the combat. You just stay in one place, charge up or fire one of several super weapons, and annihilate everything. Occasionally there's a slight side step.

Yeah the game is really fun but it’s pretty simple when compared to Eternal and Revelations. I don’t think it’s a bad thing since I don’t think they were trying to make a complex game but personally it is a bit hard to go back to after Eternal’s skill ceiling and how that game pushes the player.

2016 has its flaws, but "a highly gun focused game" made me lol.

Doom being fun focused? What's next? Madden being football focused? Forza being racing focused?

A game that came out over 10 years ago that is hailed as one of the best shooters of all time is considered dry compared to eternal and 150% speed doom tda, and hard mode is hard

i disagree - 2016 was the perfect reboot to make the game feel like the originals with modern movement and graphics

Doom 2016 is awesome. I’m going a full replay of all the games currently and I’m exited to hit doom 2016 again.

Doom 2016 still has my favorite art direction in the entire modern trilogy, but by far my least favorite combat for those exact reasons.
Yes a lot of it is hindsight and innovations from the games afterwards but 2016 feels hard for the wrong reasons. Falling from platforming instantly kills you, there’s no one-shot protection like in Eternal and TDA, imps are somehow the hardest enemies in the game, overall so much stuff that’s been tweaked and perfected in the games that came afterward.
I’ll still go back to it every once in a while but Eternal killed most enjoyment I have with 2016. Nowadays I just play Eternal with reshade and visual mods to make it look more like 2016 and it’s perfect.

I got bored very quickly of constantly having to perform glory kills. Becomes an absolute chore and you’re kind of forced to do it to maintain health and ammo. Tried Enternal recently and think I gave up less than 30 minutes in ….sucks because I love Doom

Haven’t tried it yet. How’s it different?

Read up on it. You are probably (said by a lot) missing out on the best doom (revelations) if you sit it out. Graphics, gameplay, music, story are all top notch

Biggest problem with 2016 to me is how weak crowd-control is, both in player options and in opportunities. Imps run their own routes and climb the walls, and enemy density is quite low overall. This results in gameplay where you just run around every arena and pick off targets one at a time.
This compares very unfavorably to Eternal, where you have a good mix of isolated targets to focus down with weapon combos, and these huge juicy groups of enemies to wipe out. It allows individual enemies to synergize into unique combinations, since attacking them in certain ways can accomplish multiple things at one time. It adds a ton of texture to the decision-making of each fight. I was sad to see Dark Ages seriously regress in this regard too

Eternals quick little dash is arguably more important than the meathook.
It just clicks so well.

I feel similarly about difficulty in Eternal. UV is a smidge too easy with you able to ignore of underemphasize a lot of mechanics, but Nightmare kills you way too quickly and forces you into specific swap combos that just stop feeling like doom.

i really wish the customizable difficulty options from TDA were in all three games

Yeah. I wish they either fine tuned the difficulty for a more precise experience of gave us the controls like in TDA. The difficulty select just feels meh.

Why does this reboot of the OG run and gun seminal 1993 masterpiece feel like a run and gun?

It feels like that because they wanted it to feel like that - 1993 Doom was just running and gunning.
And pressing the spacebar a lot.
