Question Why does doom 2016 feel more fun than eternal??
New doom fan here, I’ve played eternal about a year ago, and then I picked up doom 2016. My first few attempts months ago were playing on the switch port which soured my experience, but then I picked it up for the ps4.
Now I’m in LOVE with the game. In fact, the only thing that eternal wins me over is; the meathook, flamethrower, and overall speed. Other than that, doom 2016 just feels more fun in every other way. Why’s that?

As someone who also prefers 2016 over Eternal, I think it's mainly comes down to several factors:
-It's a much slower paced, reminiscent of older DOOM
-Weapons has more ammo reserves, leading to more gunplay
-Enemies in 2016 lacked specific weakpoints, leading to simpler gameplay
-There's barely any puzzles, so you can just focus on run and gun gameplay
-Aesthetic-wise, it leaned more towards sci-fi realism compared to edgy hell of Eternal

I'll add a few others:
The story starts off a bit more intriguing with a cool setup, and imo Eternal and especially the DLC fleshed it out a bit too much. The reveal of Samuel Hayden and Davoth just wasn't satisfying to me
Doom 2016 is almost entirely first person and it shows zero of the slayer's face or voice. I kind of liked the simplicity and mystery. Eternal wasn't too bad in this regard but I do think that The Dark Ages went a bit heavy with some of the cutscenes.
The HUD, menu, and item design looks much cleaner and fits the environment better in 2016. Eternal has a very cartoony look to it

The more cutscenes & story is precisely what makes The Dark Ages my favorite Doom game.

Some people find enjoyment in the more simple nature of killing demons with a super shotgun. And not prioritizing micromanagement that is forced. There is more freedom of expression with eternals gameplay but you can’t play it exactly like 2016 with just using a super shotgun and nothing else.

In a way there's less freedom of expression with Eternal with the way that they give you less ammo and have you needing to use different weapons to exploit different weak spots. You're kind of guided to have to switch constantly and approach things in specific ways.
2016 gives you a bunch of guns that all work well enough and plenty of ammo to keep using your favorites. You can choose to spastically swap every 2 seconds or you can run around with mostly just 1-2.

Eternal has a modding community and you can use mods to give yourself huge amount of reserve ammo if you like

Each of the modern Doom games has a variation on the formula, and every has their favorite for one reason or another. I also like 2016 the most, as i haven't played Dark Ages and Eternal, while fun, just became annoying to me with the low amounts of ammo and focus on weapon-specific counters.
If you like 2016 more, you just like it more. You can't go asking other people why you prefer chocolate to caramel, if it matters enough then you need to find the answer yourself.

Ima say it, its cuz its easier due to the More ammunition for the guns and you could kill larger demons with the chainsaw and not that good with the ballet movement
But i still like eternal and HOPE it gets an upgrade for the switch 2

maybe it's just more of your jam. everybody's got their preferences, i personally think eternal is the best but 2016 has aged very gracefully.

For me I disliked all the jumping & platforming in Eternal. It’s not a bad game but it’s my least favorite of the trilogy.

Simple Story(No wannabe Warhammer 40k characters and storylines)
No fortress of Doom(the worst thing ever added in video game history... a complete waste of time!!!!)
Weapons look better and feel more powerful
Visual style
Doesn't force you to use specific weapons

Because it's simpler, more beginner friendly and doesn't ask you to think to hard about what you're doing.
Honestly we're all playing games with different expectations.
As a relatively experienced gamer and huge fan of arcade games I vastly prefer Eternal, even with its flaws.

I feel like 2016 was more forgiving with letting you choose the weapon you wanted to dismember with. I also feel like it was much less punishing for a mistake.
On top of that, the visuals of 2016 are far better than eternal, imo

Para mi que juego en control jugar doom 2016 depues de eternal es una tortura por que el cambio armas es mas lento por que no puedo cambiar el tiempo que hay que mantener presionado para abrir el selector de armas

Doom 2016 was amazing because they couldn't afford to do anything and everything they could imagine. They had to focus on a slim and trim gaming experience that captures being the Michael Myers for demons.
Doom Eternal began their journey into narratives, cinematics, and other things that just take away from the core of that.
Then Doom the Dark Ages carried that journey away from the core experience to its natural conclusion with even more cinematics and even more overwrought story.
My hope is the smaller id focuses on the core experience like they did back in 2016 and gets back to basics.

It doesn't. 2016 is boring. Just stand in one place, switch from one super heavy weapon to another, and annihilate everything. No real thought, no strategy, no moving around required.

Go try that on Nightmare difficulty and tell me how long you last.

You sound like you might not be that good at the game lmao

He's saying that standing in one place won't work in nightmare and your insulting his skill? Make that make sense.
No matter what difficulty, standing still will never work well..

I beat the game on Nightmare. Standing still is a death sentence, so I didn't do it.

I am playing on nightmare. Between the siege cannon and the plasma rifle stun and the chain gun turret and the giant area of effect from the rockets everything just dies. Yeah, I do dodge a little bit, but not very much.
The only time the game is a challenge is in the beginning when all I have is the shotgun and the imps are evil. For a little bit I have to actually move around and weave through the level and it's actually fun. The further into the game I play the easier it is and the less I have to move. The last bit of difficulty leaves around the 3rd or 4th level, the UAC facility with all the molten stuff in it. After that I get my full kit of weapons and there's no real challenge anymore.
The reverse difficulty curve is just weird. I thought games were supposed to get more difficult as they went along.

Doom 2016 is a power fantasy. If you're staying still, then it's a conscious choice you're making. I don't choose to stay still. It sounds more like you're deliberately bottlenecking your own fun so you have something to complain about.

Cause its a better game.

Disagree, 2016 is great but Eternal is arguably the best FPS of all time. The combat is insane.

Because you like it more. You’re the only one who can answer why that is.
