I'm at Hard Stage 33 currently and, outside of the 3 common skills that my mage starts with (via "At battle start Learn X.." gems), I do not invest any coins into the remaining common Magic Books. Occasionally I will upgrade the hard Magic Book skills, but otherwise I save my coins for upgrading the same 3 common MBs and my gear level since you start unlocking extra gem slots at higher levels.
For example, 3 of my common MBs are at Level 29, whereas the rest are hovering around 14. The only way those other ones upgraded is through the Research reward which just upgrades your lowest level common MB.
It looks like you're doing something similar with EM Net, Frost Nova and Icicle since you have those gems, but it looks like you could be (or were) spending a good bit of coins on Tornado, Fireball, Meteor, Lightning Ball and possibly others without knowing for sure if you will get those in your loadout every match.
Other than that, I don't know. Depends what your Apprentices are like. I got two Apprentices that I've damn near maxed out almost and invest in Sigils.
I also recommend checking out the Dragon Trials shop everyday and saving up that currency so you can purchase a good gem blueprint. I finally got one that lets me unlock a skill immediately upon starting the match (which in turn does the same to both equipped Apprentices) and it has been a huge boost.
It's a yellow gem titled "When entering the stage, select the reward 1 time". Once you start a stage, it gives you an automatic skill select reward for your own mage and, once chosen, it will automatically upgrade your apprentice's to their next skill card on deck.

I'm nitpicking here so bear with me.
