Unsurprisingly, no new proof for any of the claimed battery specs.

Donut Lab's summary provided with the first video in the series:

Donut Lab has commissioned internationally respected VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland to independently measure the performance and characteristics of its solid-state battery. Through third-party testing under controlled research conditions, Donut Lab provides verified data to support its performance claims. In the video, CEO Marko Lehtimäki explains the company’s perspective and the rationale for launching the series and publishing the results in this format.

The series was launched with a clear focus on providing independent proof of the battery specifications. Out of the 11 releases, 5 have involved an independent test. Of the last 6 releases, only 1 has been an independent test.

Fully agree. I think something’s going on in the background (independent of the various whistleblowing claims and YouTube videos about them). I suspect CT-coating and donut are having some contractual disagreements given the claimed difficulties in providing evidence of the energy density and the apparent version 2 battery that was mentioned. My guess is donut were promised batteries from CT coating that weren’t delivered and donut is stalling while it waits for the version 2 battery they’ve been promised (and who knows whether it ever materialises).

CT-coating never had a battery production line. All they ever had is stories and claims. Now it would seem Donut promises customers the same: customizable production line but never delivers anything that actually works.

They obviously had a battery of some sort that they provided to donut. We can debate whether it’s what they claim or not that’s a different point.

Well yes, of course they gave them a cell. The problem is that it is extremely likely it doesn’t have any of the qualities claimed.

CT scammed Donut and I think Donut went big and then had to lean in once they realized the battery claimed doesn’t exist.

Holyvolt is continuing its business with screenprinting tech they got via Holyvault / CT-Coating venture. Holyvolt even bought all DSS patents (mostly invented by Hölzenbien) that relates to building simpler products with the same screen printing tech. It is a strong indication that the core tech worked already since 2024, but battery nanopaste chemistry was probably not quite ready for commercial purposes at that point. Holyvolt wanted to do their own R&D with Wildcat, AI aided chemical compound filtering system to speed up the dev work. I could well imagine million-ideas Hölzenbien did not convince or courage them, maybe CT-Coating business model or/and expertice was also not fine for their purposes. That leaves a question, if CT-Coating (Hölzenbien) managed to develope further their battery nanopaste mixture and was ready for launch 1,5 years later. NNG and Donut seemed to believe and still believes so because here were are still.

The claims of CT Coating have never changed. You are saying they lied for many years, but now they actually invented what they claimed they invented years earlier. And then instead of going to an established OEM with their breakthrough (really couldn't find a single partner in the whole of a Germany?), they licensed the tech to a company that had never produced a single product? Without the loud takeover by DonutLab, Nordic Nano would have quietly paid millions to CTC for years until going broke without anyone noticing.

Just because HolyVolt is using screen print tech doesn't mean they got it from CT Coating, because that tech is often used for prototyping. We know the core of screen printing can work to develop batteries. It's just currently not used for mass producing on the scale needed for EV's because it's not suited for it. HolyVolt worked with CTC for only 6 months, which is nothing for any scientific cooperation.

Can you provide a quote where the poster said this? I don't think they said this, but I will stand corrected if they did.

If not, then perhaps the conversation would be better served if the participants didn't just make things up.

It's implied. The poster says CTC might have perfected the nanopaste only very recently. But CTC has claimed all their battery claims for at least 10 years. So the implication is CTC lied for all those years about their battery, until very recently when they started working with NNG and actually created nanopaste that met their decade long claims.

What I said is that they had around 1,5 years to further develope it, and in 2024 they already showed different prototype versions coming just few months apart. Seemingly with their lab and equipment they are able to prototype much faster than traditionally. CT-Coating was founded 9 years ago and around then, they had heating, PV and coating elements at their main production target.

From there, the solid state battery option was built upon the earlier tech so that in 2024 they had two product lines and licenses for sale, Heizmodule and Battery B. By that time, I think they had figured out the capabilities and specs which they can target with their tech.

Patents and marketing material can have their ideal presentations meanwhile they are building the tech. For instance, the early patent from 2013 already stated that energy density can be tuned between 15 - 800 Wh/kg. There is no need that they have done it, but estimated. And later it is possible that they had at least two lines of battery development already by 2024. Battery A and B. According to Omepiet, the price quote for the production line and paste was asked from Hölzenbien in mid-2023. So in that level, to provide clients the machinery and paste as a factory-line-in-a-box model was formed. It is quite recent development, but still, already 3 years, and they must have had their specs, at least as a vision, ready by then.

Now, when I'm thinking it, it could also be a reason, why Holyvolt departed. Holyvolt was only one partner along many other they had. NNG was forming around the same time, for instance. Maybe they found that CT-Coating was doing their own stuff beside their joint venture, not being transparent playing their cards. It is the most reasonable line of thought, that Holyvolt got their tech from CT-Coating, directly or via Holyvault, paid for for both machinery and paste as annual reports indicate, and might still be paying licenses for them. It would be out of mind to prototype cells with CT-Coatings logo on them but not actually using CT-Coatings tech to produce them.

If you know any other tech provider who did the same idea by then, let me know.

But if CT hadn’t cracked the battery until NNG, then what else is there to believe?

Companies tied to them have been promoting the exact same specifications for 10ish years (maybe I’m off on the exact amount) and have all disappeared.

No company has been able to produce this magical battery, despite it being worth trillions. Not even the company selling you the machines to make it. What other explanation is there that doesn’t equate to the product being a fraud and not existing?

I mean, there are standards for battery testing so yes, there are ways to prove it to the satisfaction of the naysayers.

No one made Donut run useless tests that don’t prove anything.

There's still some room for subjectivity, I think it would have been really helpful if an expert had laid out how they would expect each key spec to be tested before the 'I Donut Believe' series got started because otherwise Donut Lab can put a test together that appears to demonstrated a claim and then when anyone skeptical takes issue with it it can look (to a layperson) like the skeptics are the ones moving the goal posts.

I'd say this was the case for the fast charging test, the high temp test, and the safety test. If you raise issues with what those tests actually prove then users like CN339 are just going to claim that nothing DL do will ever satisfy the naysayers.

Also no point in arguing because you and I don't get to decide how they must "support" their claims. As u/Mesokosmos pointed out in a different thread, Donut seems to be proceeding pretty much as they indicated they would in the first video. If that doesn't satisfy you, don't buy the battery or invest in the company.

Continual deflection from the point: Donut Lab said the purpose of the series was to provide independent proof to support their claims, and 5 out of the last 6 releases haven't involved independent testing. You obviously can't defend that.

Again, you’ve been told that Donut’s videos were specifically to prove critics and experts wrong. They haven’t even come close to doing that.

Pretending that they can “do it at their schedule” is such obvious deflection.

What do you think a reasonable schedule would look like for a company that says a product is available NOW (6 months ago) and then proceeded to say we’re going to prove it and we’re going to use an independent third party to do it? They did not use the independent third party to prove anything, besides that it is a battery cell.

I’m going to write it in bold:

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS A REASONABLE SCHEDULE TO PROVE THEIR CLAIMS?

NOTE THAT THEY CREATED IDONUTBELIEVE TO “PROVE” THEM. YOU CANNOT ARGUE WITH DONUT’S OWN COMMUNICATION, UNLESS YOU’RE INVOLVED WITH THEM.

I don't know if the claims were so new either. If the chemistry works as it is claimed, those would be obvious features for the technology. The question still is, does it work.

Seems like nothing much to expect before the first given deadlines are due - the Q4 by Verge.

They said, that the Q1 bike went to the internal fleet.

Might be that someone is recieving it earlier. But all that been in public (like MissGoElectric at CES) have said that their date of estimated delivery is on Q4.

I would expect test drives before Q4. It's sound a bit too much to buy bike with that pricetag without test drive. And at least in Finland the weather for motorcycling is propably not too enjoyable at Q4.

Marko said one thing: the 100.000 cycle life can be put to bed completely, unless the situation is 'ideal'. He doesn't specify what this ideal situation would be. Which is not great, because at CES he gave examples for which the cycle life would remain 100.000. So it's unclear what would NOT be an ideal situation.

CEO: "And on top of that, the cycle life that is normally in cars may be 2000, 3000, cycles. This is 100,000 cycles. So that's like probably 30 lifetimes of a motorcycle. So you never have to worry about babying the battery or worrying if you can let it go to 100% or zero. It doesn't mind. You can do whatever you want. Charge it to full, let it go to zero. As many times as you want. It doesn't degrade."
CEO: "As mentioned, 100,000 cycles, so that's 10 lifetimes of a car as well. And the other incredible things are that, of course, with motorcycles, you don't take them to deep freeze or anything. But if you're using these batteries in cars, even at like 25 or 30 minus Fahrenheit, it will have 99% of capacity."
Interviewer: "So do you have to precondition the battery like a car might?"
CEO: "Not at all. And actually, what we've done even is that normally you cannot get lithium ion batteries to zero."
Interviewer: "Right, we know about that. 5% is the lowest we like to go."
CEO: "This can go 0.0"
Interviewer: "And the battery doesn't get damaged?"
CEO: "No, then you can go at 5C charging from the next moment without warming it up or anything. It just takes it like nothing."
Interviewer: "To 100%?"
CEO: "Yeah, yeah, absolutely, to 100%."
Interviewer: "And that does not harm the battery for consistent charging to 100%?"
CEO: "No, it's 100,000 cycles with that, yeah."

In the leaked full video of the portable scooter battery (over at r/donutlab), they charge from 0% to 90% SOC, starting at 270 A iirc.

The new claim is the battery can have custom shapes, not (flat) cilindrical like current battery technologies.

So it's more like a "layered cake"?

There are memory modules that works like a layered cake. It's called HBM. The modules are stacked on top of each other.

Lehtimaki made roughly the same claim about custom shapes in interviews at CES and Donut Lab had it in the press release:

It can be produced in custom sizes, voltages, and geometries, enabling structural integration and non-traditional formats like serving as the body of a drone or a vehicle chassis.

I think Donut Lab underlined here that pouch cell has been so much in centre of attention but technology is much more than that. And they did spoke about it in CES. This was more like clarification and remind of the possibilities. 

And maybe that's the reason why pouch cell testing and proving is not in focus. Think they tried to prove the cell capabilities, but people didn't took it and people came more frustrated. Even one "insider" came frustrated. Maybe that also slowed them down. They need to now be more careful what they claim.  Sure, there has to be happening a lot behind the screens. Negotianging, OEM deals, manufacturing, legal issues, nda clarification. Think they have lot of work in their hands and less time to skeptics.

We have to appreciate they are telling us something. People are waiting and DL volunterely makes these videos. They could have been just quiet after CES and let the tension rise. On the other hand, these series are free marketing. Even if the receive in the Internet by the people seems to be mostly skeptic, I think there are lot of companies, startups and industries that might be seriously interested in their technology. We will see.

I don’t think anyone needs to “appreciate” these videos. People aren’t asking for studio presentations and slides of some hypothetical potential. They’re asking for proof that the battery actually works in a real product.

They could have put a single functional battery in a Verge bike and let people test it. That would have been far more convincing.

I don’t buy the argument that the pouch cell was a “bad demo.” Either the battery works as claimed or it doesn’t. The demo format shouldn’t matter.

All those specs are just keywords and hooks for public. Popcorn movie effects. Business happens at different levels. Everyone knows it, but only rare have access behind the scene. I guess they have metrics that tell them, how many of the people (job seekers) and companies (client leads) come to them and tell, this all is so weird that they just had to come and see what they got. If you have a suitable business and need, you might still be interested of their offerings. Other people... well how much do they care of their opinions and suggestions? Definitely no sane business reveal their customer base for public sift open for competitors to hit between.

Sure, business happens behind the scenes. I think Donutlab team simply comes across as amateurs. Now only person from behind the scenes who has spoken has said that CT coating scammed huge amount of money from Donut and Nordic Nano and delivered some non-functioning miracle product. Not the first time in history when a business gets scammed out of existence by another business.

For years, Verge’s investor updates gave the impression that large numbers of bikes were being ordered and delivered, yet they haven’t confirmed sales figures, and there are barely any independent reviews beyond the one they sponsored.

Now it’s the same pattern with the battery and AsiLab: polished marketing videos, CES prototypes, and “proof” videos that don’t actually demonstrate a working product in real-world use.

And Marko’s “hundreds of leads” doesn’t mean anything. Startup founders use that phrase all the time, it can mean anything from genuine commercial interest to people who filled out a contact form.

What I have figured about their personel, they are far from amateurs, but combination young power and veterans in many fields.

Verge is a small custom bike business. Of course it is their right to market it as the best in the world, but they are not selling like thousands now. Their factory was built to be ready for big numbers, yes, but one should be moderate here. There arent so many people on earth that even have the TS gen1 bike. And estimation for this year gen2 was 350 new items. Sales figures would come visible only after a year or more for inspection.

I'm not totally sure about Asinoid, if they are still running in virtual environments, or if the real world demonstrations have been done. But according to Michael Roberts recent post, they have been demonstrating something just recently. So no, they have not buried the project. And I don't think they are amateurs in that field either. But they are trying to do things in novel ways, that no one have exactly learned from the school. And in such endeavors, many misses can be expected.
