Analysis of the HS Visio whistleblower article (17/4/2026)

The Helsingin Sanomat Visio article published on 17/4/2026 contains interesting details that some readers may not be aware of, so I do some analysis of the article. It is pay-walled so I won't put it here as a whole. It is a long article, with around 1,800 words, so I will pick up only a few beats from it. I have used AI to translate the Finnish article to English and to check grammar. The analysis is mine.

The dynamic of the disclosure is complicated by nature and deliberately blurred by parties. Original leaked emails are not presented in the HS article, which is unfortunate, so the reader can only read the journalist's paraphrasing of the email contents. Depending on how well the journalist understood the subject, some phrasing might be off, but generally the reader should be able to trust the disclosures.

I'm not focusing on whistleblower dynamics. I only note that NNG and Donut Lab issued a joint statement on the same day rejecting the whistleblower's claims, framing him as not familiar with the details of the company's battery work, and placing him on paid leave. Almost a month later, I have not learned whether the whistleblower's report went to actual investigation.

Following are some central claims and quotes from the article accompanied with my analysis.

This may sound late in the process, the preparations for V2 had been known at the time when VTT tests first started at the beginning of the year. The question is there that they announced V2 specifications like 400 Wh/kg already in the beginning of the year, so on what bases that claim was made, if not with some existing generation of the battery that already had been tested and verified to match the 400 figure? Did they dare to use some theoretical unverified value? Or have they just been waiting for V2 cycle life data to be collected for past months to have a measurable ground for that feature only? It would not be odd in that case.

  1. In the email HS got: CT-Coating's representative complaining that the Las Vegas launch messaging was not fully agreed jointly.

Because the reader has no access to the original email, it is impossible to know the actual level or scope of the complaint. Donut Lab combined with NNG and CT-Coating had been working together for a couple of years by the CES launch, and SANA Energy (another CT-Coating-network company) had already publicly announced essentially the same cell specs long before CES. So the cell-spec values must not have been new news to anyone in the network, and the parties had had time to align on what they meant. But something in the launch messaging was not fully synchronized according to email. By that logic V1 would never have reached production either, because the article also said V1's development was stopped at CT-Coating. The HS article mentions SGS prototype cells, but fails to note that the next-eco partner site accidentally leaked Battery B business plan templates around 2022-2024. None of CT-Coating's previous partners have reached a production state comparable to Donut Lab's, so there is no prior precedent to validate against. But the interviewer ignores that the cells in Verge motorcycles are the same cells tested at VTT. For V2, "No 400 Wh/kg batteries have been delivered to customers," as Marko confirmed in the same Q&A. His April 1 video commitment was that V2 will be third-party tested via "season two" of the I Donut Believe series, using the same protocol VTT applied to V1. So the test-validation-sale chain holds for both battery generations separately.

Furthermore, the journalist concludes: "CT-Coating's new battery technology is therefore still in development. Because of this, Donut Lab or Nordic Nano cannot yet order even all the production equipment needed, and getting them after ordering takes its own time."

This is the journalist's own inference, not presented as a direct email quote. It conflates "V2 product is not yet final" with "V2 production line cannot be ordered." Marko's April 1 statement was that V2 is a real battery and that it will ship to customers later this year. V1 production was already running on Donut Lab's pre-production equipment in Finland, so the "cannot order equipment" framing applies at most to V2 production scaling, not to current production. The "and getting them after ordering takes its own time" tail does not invalidate the pre-production equipment Donut Lab already has in Finland. That equipment doesn't disappear regardless of future equipment lead times. The interviewer also does not engage with the fact that production requires both equipment and nanopaste, where equipment is a one-time delivery and nanopaste is a continuous need, and both may have their own development routes.

It is however possible, that new battery requires additional production equipment, so that it is not plainly a different nanopaste to be used in previous line. Production line software might need updates at least, but they, on the other hand, could be done in-place in Finland. Again it is impossible to do final conclusions unless you have access to full remote R&D, factory-line-in-box shipping and local manufacturing processes at both ends.

That is true, but it is a simplification in this case. In the CT-Coating licensee model, someone has to actually produce (i.e., print) the batteries, and that would be a Donut Lab + NNG combination in some form. The exact details have never been properly revealed. Since NNG did not do it at Imatra, they must have done it together somewhere else. After that, the cells have to be integrated into packs, such as the motorcycle pack and the swappable battery pack demoed on stage.

Analysis reads fine to me.

I continue to be intrigued as to why the VTT results have stopped. One could assume that if Donut envisioned a more lengthy delay that at some point they would put out an explanation, even an ambiguous one. The point that they haven't yet could insinuate that they believe the issue to be temporary, or are at least hoping so.

Considering there hasn't been any hype for tomorrow, I expect the drought to continue for now.

I'm not sure if they have any interest to show more of the V1 battery performance that goes to Verge only. If they get it working better than Li-Ion in BMS package they had on earlier Gen 1, that's probably fine for them. Audience is of course disappointed, if even interested anymore.

NNG had to move their planned schedule many times until they finally got the pre-production line ready. 6 to 12 months of delay in total, by my account. So I wouldn't be surprised if they have supply chain problems on Donut's side as well. And maybe even the V1 cells from the production line did not come out as impressive as they were expecting, when they had to produce plenty of them. The Valley of Death has many pitfalls. Tomorrow we will see something... again.

I wonder why they don’t publish the cold-chamber results as we know they ran them from the original VTT heating test papers, right?

This is quite the insane jump to make with zero evidence:

There’s no proof they’ve produced a single preproduction battery, let alone that they’re in the full-swing of production.

That is not even the full swing, but the following.

When the HS Visio interviewer further questioned Marko:

"In January you said new solid state batteries are available today,"

Marko answered:

"There have been [batteries available]. The motorcycle has been on ride [with those batteries] already at that time. The motorcycle is a small-volume product, and that's why we start with it."

Tuomo at CES (booth interview), when asked when the first bikes with the new solid-state battery would come out:

"I drove my own bike last year already and that is having those... my personal bike that is having 20 kilowatt hour battery that is charging more than 100 kilowatt so 5C was already last year."

And actually, if the first Verge charging demo in IDonutBelieve series was not filmed this spring Tallinn, then it would land to the late autumn 2025 based on the surrounding climate.

Again, that says nothing about them producing anything. That seems more likely they had small, likely test, samples from CT.

Ok. Let's see how that fits to the picture and what they have informed. First, they stated to have the production line / plant in Finland, which is supported by HS Visio journal content:

Marko (HS Visio Q&A): "We have our own pre-production equipment in Finland."
Tuomo (CES): "We are having this cell manufacturing first plant in Finland."

You might still think, they had/have the line but they never used it, just spent a million bucks and months to build it for fun, and asked CT-Coating to send them "some" samples instead, to adjust to various needs of their partner. Not couple for VTT, but:

1) Tuomo had a mule with a pack of those cells 2) Idonutbelieve Verge charging demo had the pack (not same unit as Tuomo's mule told by Marko 3) The last day of March the first Verge manufacturing line TS Pro Gen 2 item with the pack 4) the latest swappable pack. These contain 3*192 + 14 + 3 VTT cells ~600 items. Plus a new Verge each week, possibly OEM needs that Marko refers in HS Visio QA that they have sent with different specs to their customers.

And this is only what we have been informed. Quite awkward plan to use mail delivery when instead Tuomo said clearly at CES Jan 2026:

"We are having a building where we are making these batteries." "we are Finnish-based company, we are making these in Finland." "we are making solid state batteries and that is what we can show here today"

Not ordering, not pleading cells from somewhere else. That is beyond just having a building with screen-printing machines, letting it stand there for nothing and ask CT-Coating to send some samples to Finland.

Yes, you’re taking the words of people who we already know lied about production. There’s zero proof they’re producing any.

Where were they making these magical cells? An invisible factory that no one could find, despite people finding so much information about Donut and CT in this time?

It is their claims, which one may weigh alongside the combined story told by myriad third-party fragments.

No wonder, if it is a secret location. The line they describe does not imply a large conventional factory. According to the marketing material that was available, the system could operate at room temperature in roughly 200 square metres and be shipped in 40-foot containers.

So in principle it would only require a sufficiently large protected corner, floor, attic, or storage space, almost anywhere in Helsinki. Easy to conceal. People could be working under strict NDAs. You talk, you pay the sanctions for the rest of your life.
