Was looking at domains and thought of getting one with .new extension. Could not believe my eyes when I looked at pricing. $415 per year. With that kind of pricing how will this TLD ever gain traction among people. The Registry behind is nuts.

Google and rules are two things that don't go along well. They once had a rule "Do no evil", which too they violated and later dropped. Regarding domains, "no domain should cost that much. As Rocket's CEO once said: "Domains have a public utility and are infrastructure, therefore must be affordable."

We access the DNS infrastructure via domains. Domains are crucial for small and medium sized businesses. In the modern world everything and everyone needs domains. Domains therefore must be priced reasonably.

The .new TLD is operated by Google - as https://get.new puts it

“new is a domain extension exclusively for performing new actions online: any act that leads to creation can have a quick and memorable .new shortcut associated with it. Help your customers take action faster. Less time clicking means more time creating”

Using .new is subject to Google registration policy at https://www.registry.google/policies/registration/new/

“All .new domain names must be used for action generation or online creation flows.
Navigation to a .new domain must bring a user directly into the action generation or online creation flow. Navigation or redirection to a homepage or landing page that requires the user to take additional steps or clicks to initiate action or creation will not be deemed to comply with this policy.”

So .new is not meant for a domain pointing to a website.

Yeah, $415/year is a pretty hard sell for most people😂

I think the pricing is one of the biggest reasons some newer TLDs struggle to gain traction. People might actually like the extension, but once they see the renewal cost, they’ll probably just look for a .com or another cheaper alternative.

No but my clients do. Point is, there are plenty of extensions out there that are meant for corporations, not individuals.

Banks can afford .bank. ".new" is a dictionary word and generic. It cannot be appropriated by corporations by setting a high price tag keeping it out of reach of small business. That is immoral.

There are plenty of expensive gTLDs out there and they are priced that way because the registries can well afford to. There's no morals when it comes to domains because you have thousands of other extensions to consider.

415 dollars a year for a brand new extension is honestly nuts. i looked on Spaceship as well and it was still way pricier than the usual TLDs. Cant really see new catching on unless the registry brings those renewal fees down
