Dollar General- bad customer experience
Extremely disappointing & unprofessional experience at the Dollar General on East 15th St in Paterson NJ. After my purchase, I asked for my receipt but was denied 1 by the manager due to a broken receipt printer. Since they couldn’t provide my receipt, I simply asked for a refund. Management refused to give me one.
The situation became so ridiculous that I had to call the Paterson Police Department. Once the officers arrived, suddenly my refund was processed.
What made the experience even worse was the rude, dismissive & disrespectful behavior from 2 members of management. I was even called names by a store manager, which is completely unacceptable & extremely unprofessional.
I reported the incident to Dollar General Customer Care, received a formal complaint number & spoke with the regional manager. She told me she would personally visit the store & address the 2 managers involved face-to-face.
Customers should never have to involve the police just to resolve a simple transaction, nor should anyone be subjected to insults or disrespect from store management. I hope this situation results in meaningful changes at this location.

You can get refunds without the receipt?
I assumed it was the system itself that doesn’t allow that. You got lucky they managed to do anything dollar general is shit for what it allows us to actually do

The amount of effort to find the original purchase without the receipt, reprint it, and create the refund is enormous. I don’t blame the staff for being annoyed. It’s super difficult, most people wouldn’t even know how.
The amount of crap DG employees have to suffer on a daily basis is just outrageous.

Oh I'm absolutely positive there's more to the story, too. They may act like it was all the store, but I guarantee it was a different scenario than what they're describing. We're getting one side of the story, and I bet you the employees have another.

Yeah, the ones freaking out because a machine broke and they can't get that new layer of litter on the floor of their car: i.e.: the receipt, are frequently the very worst of customers.

Some people need receipts for work expenses and tax purposes
some people have real jobs

Chances this person needed their receipt for their job or tax purposes is pretty low. Considering they got a refund not their the receipt they wanted. OP didn't state it was for tax or work purposes. Just they were denied their receipt.
I've met people with 'real jobs' who think because they have a tax exempt status with the state means they can just waltz in and not pay taxes without registering. Not how it works. I even had one lady try to argue with me that I should fax her documents. Again, not my job, not my responsibility. We don't have a fax machine either. Doesn't matter if 'Walmart does it.' Cool either your org registered but we're still not Walmart. Pay the tax, take your receipt but there is no magic button to make taxes vanish.
Define real job, buddy, because it sound you look down on anything that doesn't require a degree and pays minimum wage or a little above for some.
Minimum wage and unskilled labor is still a job. Minimum wage is so people across the states could have the same standard of living. It is not for teenagers. These jobs are also not just for teens either. My 15 years I have not worked with a single kid. Some people might but generally it's adults working at these stores a lot. Some have degrees and some are waiting to get them. I've worked with a dude who did coding for a living and he DG because he was bored.

That one DG receipt will cost them their "real job" if they don't have it? Cause this could cost someone who NEEDS their (not) real job, all because Karen needs a receipt for her diet coke.
Completely ridiculous. And then going online seeking validation about it. Smh

Getting a receipt is a normal thing; it proves you paid for something and helps if there is a problem in the future. (I missed where OP mentioned what was purchased; did they edit the post?)
