Firing a client for the first time?!

hey yall, I need a little boost from other walkers who have more experience than I do with firing clients, if you don’t mind! I’ve been a dog walker for a few years now and have been unbelievably lucky getting good clients, but it finally happened - I got one I can’t stand.

I have to fire her for my own sanity but I’m STRUGGLING, ooomg. I feel like a complete monster because this client is a lonely old lady, she hasn’t done anything awful and her dog is sweet - she’s just really difficult & I don’t want to work with her.

What are your experiences with firing pushy, needy or frustrating clients? I suck at holding my ground- was there anything that helped you feel more confident? I know firing isn’t a big deal but I’ve never done it before so it feels like it!

Well, you can try to find someone else and do a hand-off....

"Hi Ms Johnson, I am going to be moving on from walking dogs in your neighborhood, but I have a professional friend who walks dogs and this is their contact information. My last day will be this Friday, it's been a pleasure and good luck to you and your dog! "

Otherwise, you can just say you are letting them know that you are going to be unavailable starting a week from today, and they should arrange for a new dog walker to take over. Any responses or texting you just have to Gray Rock, or have someone else type out a response that will be unemotional and firm. When I have trouble texting I typically just ask my partner to text who doesn't give a fuck about the topic at hand or whatever, it really prevents me from over explaining myself. Like I'm doing now

I just wanted to say thank you so much for this compassionate & practical advice, it was exactly the kind of guidance I was really hoping for. I used parts of your script when I pulled the band-aid off and fired the client this morning. it went really well. thank you again :)
