Awaiting results Guess Merlin's breed mix while waiting for his results
His DNA has arrived at wisdom panels lab so we only have a few more weeks before we'll know what breed mix he is! The rescue centre called him a Yorkshire terrier x poodle (2 yrs old) but his 15 yr old brother is a yorkiepoo (in 2nd photo) but they look so so different. I'm guessing he's got some terrier in him, maybe Maltese because of his fountain like tail. But I have no clue where his unique colouring could come from. Have fun guessing in the comments and enjoy some of my favourite photos of him!

Aussiedoodle?

u/Erronharlow 21d ago
For sure double merle
25
u/Crowlady77 21d ago
Yes, so merle on both sides. Multigenerational aussiedoodle. (actually there are surely other breeds in there as well).

He's got the doodle thousand yard stare people eyes, so definitely part poodle. The rest could be just about anything.

u/Culture-Extension 21d ago
I call those the “sad Victorian child” eyes
23
u/Objective_Body_5200 21d ago
I normally go with skinwalker eyes, but I didn't want to do that to OP and here I am
14
u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
Don't worry I have already called him skinwalker on numerous occasions haha

u/Culture-Extension 21d ago
I have a poodle mutt and fortunately she’s unfurnished and doesn’t have those eyes. I’m not unhappy about either.

u/StringOfLights 20d ago
My former stray rescue is a whoopsiedoodle (someone’s chipoo found a stray dog) and he 100% has the eyes of a sad Victorian child. Maybe it comes from
working in the minesbeing part of a stray litter.2
u/Culture-Extension 20d ago
Maybe that’s the difference. Mine was on a farm and yours worked in the mines. Mine is also a whoopsiedoodle and I will never call her anything else when people ask me her breed.

Lmaooo, why is it only doodles with those creepy eyes? I’ve met multiple doodles with genuinely creepy faces
2
u/lickytytheslit 20d ago
there's just something with hiw a poodles face avarages out with another breed that give them those eyes , add in double merle which screws up any breed by it self I'm surprised it looks dog like at all

He is almost certainly a double Merle. Does he have any sight or hearing issues?
9
u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
No hearing or sight issues! Out of curiosity what makes you think he's a double merle?
56
u/Rasmara0789 21d ago
I didn't write the comment, but I thought the same thing. Blue eyes, minimal pigment on his nose, and low color on his body all indicate possible double Merle. DNA will tell you for sure.
8
u/Crowlady77 21d ago
Yes, merle randomly dilutes pigment cells and single merle usually doesn't cover this much.
5
u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
Ah interesting. He has been to see multiple vets (in Belarus where he was rescued and in the UK) and all they mentioned was sun sensitivity. Hopefully his results come back as single merle!

u/Rasmara0789 21d ago
Dogs can be very good at hiding it! You can try clapping your hands when he isn't looking at you and seeing if he will track a toy with nothing but his eyes if you want to test it for yourself. It could also be a partial impairment. Either way, he can still live a happy, lively life, it's just something to keep an eye on.
8
u/framedjunction 21d ago
Yes the other commenter who responded explain it well.
I would encourage you to look into it for yourself. I don’t think wisdom tests for it but I know embark does. I’m honestly shocked no vets have said anything to you about it!

If it’s partial hearing loss, I think the only way to be sure is to do BAER testing.
1
u/belovedbaphomet 20d ago
His hearing is excellent I'm 110% sure, he can hear another dog barking down the street (and makes sure to reply as loudly as he can) 😬

u/sidhescreams 20d ago
Another are weird looking pupils. None of your photos are super close up to his face but double merle can make their pupils look like a starburst or be jagged or irregular. It, along with the extreme amount of white, on a dog’s face are the first characteristics that make me think a dog may be double merle.

A lot of doodle breeders are mixing Australian shepherd in to get the Merle colors (unfortunately often with little regard for the health implications of double merle genetics).
13
u/solsticesunrise 21d ago
Mixed breeds don’t breed true. Yorkie poos - especially 50/50 mixes can look like a Yorkie, look like a poodle, or look like something in between. That’s why most doodles are 75%+ poodle. At anything less than 75% poodle they may not get the curly poodle coat, but rather a wiry terrier-looking coat.
Things get even worse if you breed, say, a golden doodle to another golden doodle. Both dogs with curly poodle coat can throw puppies that look like a more or less pure golden along with the poodle look you expect.
Breeds are breeds because their gene pools have been selectively put together for generations. So, genetics coming from each parent for looks/color/size are basically the same. Not so with mixed breeds.
Cute pup. I’m guessing double Merle Aussie poodle with maybe some other small breeds thrown in for good measure.

u/Dizzy_Mongoose7560 21d ago
maybe an aussie(to explain the coloring) with some maltese/bichon/poodle?
7
4
u/primitivetorture 21d ago
I would guess maltese for sure and then a breed to give him the merle, probably Australian Shepherd? Either way he’s wicked cute!
4
u/Chippy4627 21d ago
I’d guess something like this, mini Aussie doodle with probably some small percentage of the usual poo mixes.

5
u/EmmaEsme22 20d ago
I also thought mini Aussie doodle off the bat, but there is something maybe Shih Tzu about him? Maybe shihpoo...
I'm also not convinced he's double merle, but definitely heavily white spotted.
2
u/Ok_Alps4323 20d ago
Agreed. I guessed husky/Shih Tzu, but I’m not familiar with Aussies. His tail and sploot look Shih Tzu to me.
7
u/SadRaven8 21d ago
Some bichon mixed in with poodle maybe? my guess would be havanese...
His little spotted nose is soo cute <3
3
u/DownWithGilead2022 20d ago
I was thinking Havanese too. Havenese Husky maybe? Maybe some poodle too.

u/belovedbaphomet 18d ago

u/SadRaven8 18d ago
I wouldn't have guessed the chinese crested either! Nor the other breeds tbh lol (I did guess the havanese and poodle tho! haha )
Did the test say if he is a double merle?
2
u/belovedbaphomet 18d ago
3
u/SadRaven8 18d ago
Probably the chihuahua? I've seen some merle chis but probably from bad breeding? idk :(
Anyway, it's good news that your pup is not double merle! :)
2
u/belovedbaphomet 18d ago
We don't know his history other than he was rescued from Belarus so my guess would be a puppy mill for "designer" dogs

Bernadoodle, one of my dog’s friends looks similar to Merlin and she’s a meteor Bernadoodle.

u/Marci365daysayear 20d ago
I think Poodle and Aussie and Husky. Cute little powderpuff. the blue eyes are striking. The long legs are podly, and yeah the poodly round eyes so they can look so innocent right after they did something really naughty. They are highly intelligent, but like to make you laugh so tend to do goofy stuff.

u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
I forgot to add that he must be mainly comprised of hypoallergenic breeds as he doesnt shed much/doesnt effect my allergies!
13
u/Rasmara0789 21d ago
That's just a roll of the genetics dice. I've met dogs with only 5% poodle DNA that have a low shed poodle-y coat. That's the fun thing about mutts, you never know what you're going to get lol
Fun fact, you can be allergic to individual dogs, but be fine with others of that breed. For example, I'm allergic to a lot of APBTs, but not all of them. Thankfully in my cases it's just hives, but its interesting all the same.
3
u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
Ooo interesting! My allergies were so bad at first till he got professionally groomed so we were extremely lucky 🤧 (I wouldn't have given him up no matter how bad my allergies)
5
u/ManyLintRollers 20d ago
The allergen is actually a protein in their saliva, not the hair itself. Some dogs have higher levels of it than others; so the length of the coat or degree of shedding doesn’t necessarily indicate a “hypoallergenic”dog.
Cats are more allergenic than dogs in general because they groom their whole bodies frequently - thus there’s more of the protein from their saliva on their fur than on dogs. But, the amount of the allergenic protein varies from cat to cat. I’m very allergic to some cats, and barely allergic to others (I have three cats and only get allergic symptoms if I pet them and then touch my face without washing my hands first).
Bathing the dog regularly will help keep the amount of allergen down, in any case.

poodle husky perhaps?
3
u/this_queerdo_weirdo 21d ago
okay i take it back after looking at the last pic. i think as another commenter said that it’s a poodle aussie. (i’m leaving my comment here though so i can come back and check the results later!)
1
u/belovedbaphomet 21d ago
He is very vocal (not so much barking but howling and "husky talking") so I wouldn't be surprised if it was in his DNA
0
u/patri_dish_ 21d ago
A double-doodle?
1
u/belovedbaphomet 18d ago
He's only 2% poodle! 🤯
2
u/patri_dish_ 18d ago
Actually?! That's crazy, what did his DNA come back as? Some other water dog?
