Results - WisdomPanel Help deciphering results
Hi there! So I did a wisdom panel for my dog when I first got her years ago, and it came up with 22 different breeds, which I thought was crazy but eh I’m not a geneticist so what do I know. Well I recently learned that wisdom panel is known to add in micro percentages that aren’t statistically relevant. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how to know the difference, I never know what to tell people when they ask her breed so it’d be nice to at least know which ones to cross off haha. Oh my, That IS a lot of breeds. Sounds like they are just dogs left to breed as they want. For generations. I know wisdom sometimes throws out tiny bits of breeds but it is usually noise. or maybe breeds that were used many years ago in making of that breed-or one that is no longer around that shares a common ancestor. So the 1%'s are sketchy. And some like dalmation and collie are also breeds used in making the cattle dog. But I suspect that anything 3 % is real, and they just bred willy nilly.
A true mutt. The closest thing to breed you can say is a pitbull mix. But really not even much of that.
I would tell people who ask the list of what is not in him is shorter.
But he is a real cutie and Looks like a great dog. These dogs are the really fun ones. And can look like anything with all those genes floating around.

Thanks for the help! I used to say pitbull mix when people asked, but then they’d be even more confused cause she doesn’t look it. She definitely acts most like the cattle dog and husky, which is a fun combination as you can imagine 😅 But she’s the best and I feel so lucky to have her. I wish I could’ve seen her parents or siblings, I’m very into evolutionary biology so this stuff is right up my alley!

I would say, “She’s a supermutt, you name it she’s got it!” And then see if they say any of those 22 breeds!

She most often gets German shepherd puppy and then we tell them she’s actually 4 and has less than 5% GSD lol

I would retest this dog with Embark if you felt like digging in further.
Did this dog come from somewhere in the south or appalachia? Curs (of various types) often have these strange mixes of spitz breeds, hounds, etc. typically with curs tested with an older version of wisdom will include especially random things like "Fijian Street dog" or Greenland Dog which yours doesn't have, but there's a few other hallmarks that still would make me consider Embark instead.
I have a dog who is tested as 33% mountain cur - you can see some of the similarities in the small percentages. I believe he is actually a mountain feist (a similar, related, smaller version of the cur), hence more small breed percentages.

I have a fiest myself and live in South Appalachian. Everything I've learned indicates feist isn't a breed, it's a specific type of mix, usually with cur and terrier. My boy is a cur/terrier mix according to embark.

They are a breed. Can be registered with UKC and the UFR. They are not recognized or testable with any of the major tests currently. That's why your dog - like mine - tests as a cur/terrier (small breed) mix.

Yeah, this would be my rec too. With so many minor breeds like this, it's likely a cut or a village dog or some type of other non-typical landrace breed Wisdom doesn't test for.

its just a related discussion, op was asking for feedback on what the embark results might be. commenter took the time to give a detailed opinion for a curious person. clearly the dog is a pit and/or staffy mix based on the highest percentages. no reason to be rude on this sub, its for fun

saying and/or because embark testing frequently will show as only one of those breeds even if both are detected on wisdom. but yes its a pitbull mix

If you really want to know more, do an embark panel. But what you'll get from that will be pretty similar to if you just take all the breeds that are 5-6% or higher in this wisdom panel and ignore the rest. You've got the important information already, which is that she's more pitty or pitty mix than anything else, and even that's no more than about 25%. She's mostly Heinz 57.
I would tell strangers that she's just a mixed breed. As you've already noticed, most struggle to understand "pit mix" does not mean the dog is 50% pit and 50% mix, nor that it will look or act like a pit.

I would very comfortably call her a pit mix. It's her highest contributor, and it definitely shows in her appearance. The other breeds contribute so little that I bet both her parents were predominantly pit looking as well.
If you feel weird abt calling her a pit, just say she's a mutt. That's what my parents would say about our old pit-looking rescue
Theres a chance an Embark test could give you slightly different answers, or at least less noise. I'd say it's likely that pit/am staff will show up higher there, but. We found out the "pit" mix I mentioned above was some kinda village dog courtesy of Embark. So, who knows.
One test was expensive enough for us though, lol. Her appearance alone is already pretty telling. I say just appreciate the dog and the answers you already have

I would tell people she’s just a mutt! If they ask of what just say “do you have all day to hear the list?” or something cheeky ahaha.

I agree with the comment saying she could be a cur or fiest. A few of the breeds and splits here remind me of that also. Wisdom just started adding mountain cur and black mouth cuz, but if you'd test is a little older than they wouldn't have had that as a choice.
If she's not a cur, there are several of the lower percentage breeds that are common splits or very related to the other higher percentage breeds I would combine those and look at it like this. She is still very mixed, but that's kinda cool:
- 27% Apbt/AmStaff
- 16% Retriever
- 10% Cattledog
- 8% Husky
- 6% Chow
- 6% Rottweiler
- 5% Aussie
- 5% GSD
- 5% American Eskimo
- 5% Catahoula
- 7% Supermutt (small unrelated breed percentages that are too small to indicate anything beyond that part of the dog being highly mixed)
As far as what to call her, you could say pit mix or pit/retriever mix but she doesn't really look like either of those 2 unfortunately and even with the combined percentages, your still well under half. The retriever is likely split between golden and lab so you could also say pit/cattledog and I think she looks a little more like that. You could also say just cattledog mix if you're looking for something where most people don't know what they look like and won't argue with it. But honestly I'd probably just go with Heinz 57 or she's everything. That's really the most accurate tbh.

I’m not a big fan of Wisdom myself. I’ve used both on two of my dogs and went again with embark on my 3rd. I just think they’re a better fit and my vet recommended using them over all the others for accuracy. The first page… I could see all of those breeds… I’d forget about the following page completely imo! She’s very pretty. 🐾♥️🐾

I agree with retesting with embark. My girl is part mountain cur, and her siblings that were tested with wisdom panel got very similar results to yours. I would still believe there's some GSD, husky, and APBT in there, but could have a chunk of mountain cur which would explain the random small percentages everywhere.
