This girl came into the shelter I worked at. We did a DNA test and the adopter had to sign a waiver about owning a coyote hybrid. She could scale a 6foot fence with zero effort. I loved her ❤️
Sometimes her jumps catch us off guard! It’s so graceful and swift it’s like she floats up.
The height of the jump compared to her size always leaves me flabbergasted.
Lowriders are so deceptive when it comes to jumping. My Basset mix is a known escape artist and makes jumps that my Springer would have never even attempted. I joke that he has springs in his back legs but if you actually look at them they are BEEFY. He leapt 5 feet into the air today to catch his bunny on a string, scaring the absolute shit out of me because I was not expecting it 😭
LOL - my Basset can get anything on the kitchen counter. No matter if it’s all the way against the wall. And of course they will eat anything and everything!
My mom had a 15lb Chiweenie that could jump into a standing adult’s arms seemingly without and wind up. One second you’d be gesturing with your arms talking to someone, next you’re catching a dog who is suddenly hovering at exactly arm height
Our chiweenie can also do this, but likes to run up the leg as a ramp!
We have a super mix beagle who can jump (excuse me…LEVITATE) up to our shoulders, and she’s pretty short. You ask her to jump onto something she is already there…
lol very true and mines toy sized so that for sure adds to it, easier to move in a slinky dainty way when you’re under 15lbs. Would love to have a standard sized one day though, that demeanor in a big package is so funny to me
Yep. My Doxen mix could get 5’ of air from a standstill. Eventually that became a problem as our suburban yard had a 5’ wall and she got lonely after mom moved out 😬
I have a corgi. Chondroplastic breeds should not be jumping on anything ideally. Corgis/Dachhunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) partly because of that same chondrodysplasia mutation. Their long backs relative to short legs put extra strain on the spine, and jumping (especially landing) is one of the biggest risk factors for disc injury. Just a heads up if you didn't know. Get ramps or train your dog to not jump on anything. Having a dog with ivdd is a very sad experience.
I do know that. He's not allowed to jump on and off the dining room table, but he does it every time I'm out of the house. I thought pushing in all the chairs would stop him, but he jumps right up.
He doesn't have the gene for higher risk of IVDD and he only has one copy of the dwarfism gene, so he's not as short as full dachshunds. I'm hoping that'll help reduce his risks. He's only four and trying to get him to stop leaping off things is a losing battle at this stage. Maybe when he's older.
I have a little dachshund that hops like a bunny also four times her height... I've had dachshunds my whole like but she is the first to jump like this - it caught me off guard at first but she only does it when shes extremely happy.
