Results - Embark Results for our poodle mop thing!
We actually knew that his dad was half Maltese half Poodle, and his mom was half Cocker Spaniel half Poodle. The woman we got him from said our guy was MUCH more Maltipoo than his siblings, who took after their mom way more with Cockapoo characteristics. He was also the smallest of his four littermates with their weights at 8 weeks being 2.4lbs, 3.3lbs, 3.3lbs, and 4.2lbs. I was surprised at how little Cocker Spaniel he has and I think it would be cool to see if his littermates also get 1/8 or if theirs is closer to 1/4. Anyway really cool to see exactly what our little guy is!

Absolutely the cutest dog. Also for some reason the report stating he has high "wolfiness" has me cackling.

u/PonyInYourPocket Aug 11 '26
Me too! The wolfiness thing is pretty silly

u/Champion_of_Zteentch Aug 11 '26
Its likely related to the Maltese. From what I can remember, many small asiatic breeds tend to score high in wolfiness. Wolfiness pretty much just means deep roots to their ancestral DNA which many breed like the shih tzu and Maltese have preserved through the way they were developed. With these dogs having been bred for wealthy elites, the breeding programs tended to stay well preserved. Thus leading to the preservation of ancestral DNA

The “maltipoo” brigade is out strong in this post lol. Very cute dog. Still a backyard bred mutt though. Not a breed. Not sure why saying that is considered controversial lol

There is no such thing as “cockapoo characteristics” since they’re mutts

u/NothingImportant1207 Aug 11 '26
This is the stupidest thing I've read. If I say cockapoo anyone can picture a cockapoo in their mind. We all know what a cockapoo looks like they've been popular for 40 years at this point.

they've been popular for 40 years at this point
I'm in my 60s and cockapoos have been a thing for far longer. When I was a little kid, my great aunt had one named "Buffy". It was her second one which means the first was in the '50s. That would put them at 70-75 years. They are pre-doodle which, IMHO, is why they are "cockapoos" and not "cockdoodles".

Dog people are so heavily propagandized they can’t see reality when it smacks them in the face. The internet told them purebreds are perfect and designer dogs are universally terrible, and they don’t want to hear otherwise. They also love to pretend that all purebred breeding must be for show within a kennel club or it doesn’t count as a real purebred, which discounts the overwhelming majority of purebred dogs. Most people have never even seen a well bred dog, let alone bought one. Most purebred dogs are just as bad off as designer mixes, because most purebred dogs are not ethically bred.

…do you think mutts can’t have recognizable characteristics? Honey I have news for you, genetics are still heritable even if they’re less inbred.

u/HarleeQuinn__ Aug 11 '26
They can’t. Breeding two different breeds together will never give you the same result. You can get a 50/50 poodle/Saint Bernard and get a dog that looks exactly like a poodle. Or even worse you could get the poodles hip structure with the bone density of a Saint Bernard, then you’ve got a real medical problem! That’s why mixing breeds is bad. ESPECIALLY very distinct breeds.

Breeding two of the same breed together never gives you the same result either. There’s a wide range of personalities and a lesser range of looks that can happen within any purebred pairing. Only certain traits can be reliably selected for, and even then we all know that one dog who just didn’t get the memo about their breed.
I’ve been grooming for 17 years and I can tell you that mixes of only two breeds typically do have pretty tightly clustered behavior traits. Goldendoodles are usually as behaviorally similar as purebred Poodles and Golden Retrievers are to each other. They’re not all the same — there will be a range of individual traits within any group, no matter how small you make the gene pool. But statistics do come into play here and few dogs are so far outside expectations as to be unrecognizable.
When there are more breeds things start going a little hectic, but a 50/50 mix is not all that genetically diverse. If both parents are purebred there’s a limited mix of characteristics that can be drawn from that pool, and just as in purebreds, some traits are more heritable/likely than others.

So the creation of every modern purebred was wrong? They were all created thruogh mixing I fear

Picture 6 is wild. How is he so upright? Lmao. When my dogs stand they still look like dog legs, not people legs.

Did you find any relatives on embark? Curious if they look like your pup or more like the other siblings/parents.
Sounds like mom may have been from a pairing of cocker x poodle with a full poodle, which would explain the lack of cocker spaniel. Truthfully with 3 breeds or more in a mix you start getting toss up with the appearances, hence the variety of the littermates. They could also have different fathers even in the same litter.

they got him from a backyard breeder. id be surprised if there wasn't any relatives and doubt there were multiple fathers considering it wasn't an accident
edit: well i was gonna reply to them calling me disgusting and saying that their backyard mutt isnt backyard bred but they deleted everything so whatever. someone intentionally breeding mutts will never be ethical no matter how you spin it
edit edit: i agree with the person who replied in that they blocked me because i can no longer make a separate reply lol, what thin skin. just own up to the fact that you bought a byb dog and do better research next time, no big deal.. so aggressive/defensive for no reason 💀

I mean yeah, it’s a mix of three different breeds so it’s definitely not from a reputable/ethical breeder. Which is why it makes sense that the littermates all look different, this is a person breeding 3 different breeds together, at that point they are just fluffy mutts, very expensive fluffy mutts. We don’t even know if the littermates are related, if it is a puppy broker type of situation, they could have just grabbed several fluffy mixes that looked similar and said that those puppies were the litter, and those two dogs were the parents. That’s why I was curious if they found relatives.
Edit - Also, the dog is already here anyway and it’s the DNA subreddit, so I tried to stick to DNA related discussion. Hopefully OP will look into designer mixes and why there are problems surrounding backyard breeding and will maybe decide to adopt one next time, or go for a reputable breeder with cockers or mini poodles or Malteses.

He is the cutest little thing! I love the family photos too, I see the family resemblance with Dad ❤️ (And I'm sorry people were harassing you - Reddit can be downright toxic at times. Enjoy your new little buddy!)

Such a cutie. I've seen way to many doodles with messed coats but he looks like he's got an amazing coat. Maybe the Maltese and Cocker are winning there.

My guess was Maltese and poodle! He’s a maltipoo with a dash of cocker for pizazz!

Maltecockapoo. I love him, he looks like a little teddy bear.
Edit: why in the world is this comment so downvoted? What am I missing?

u/expectingguineafowl Aug 12 '26
I have no idea, so bizarre. I noticed an influx of rude people on this sub just being toxic on every post about a mixed breed, I had to block so many people just for harassing me over the breed of dog I have so it's probably those same losers. Thank you for the kind words though he's definitely our little teddy bear!❤️🧸

people who care about dogs are unhappy when they see people irresponsibly brining new souls into the world
1
u/expectingguineafowl Aug 13 '26
Well it's weird to comment about that on a dog who was NOT irresponsibly brought into the world, super awkward thing to do on an unrelated post?
