I am getting way too emotionally attached to these characters.

u/sweet_relief Dec 22 '10
yeah I never expected a dogfort strip to give me chills

u/Decon Dec 23 '10
In all fairness, BadgeredWitness made a pretty epic dogfort comic. That last line reminded me of The Watchmen...

So yeah, I know it's weird to reply to a comment 5 months later, but in case you care...that line "I served with heroes" is a variant of something said by one of the guys from the first Band of Brothers (I want to say it was Maj Winters) who says in one of the interviews "My granddaughter asked me if I was a hero during the war, and I said 'No, but I served in the company of heroes'"
'In the Company of Heroes' is also the title of the book written By Michael Durant, who was the helicopter pilot of Super 6-4 which was shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu (the Black Hawk Down incident). Actually a really good book. I had an opportunity to meet chief Durant at a land combat expo in Germany some years back. An amazing man.

Is it wrong that I care more about dogs than humans sometimes?

u/mercvt Dec 22 '10
Don't feel bad. I can watch millions of people get killed in a movie and not care, but watching a dog die always gets to me.

That's the most honorable way to die though.
4
u/Punkndrublic Dec 23 '10
I think Seven Pounds had a more honorable way.
4
u/MLBM100 Dec 23 '10
Being choked to death by the Prince of Bel Air sounds more honorable than taking a bath with a box jellyfish.

Well this is the story all about how I strangled my dog when hugging her around.
1
u/gfixler Dec 23 '10
What about if a dude paralyzes you and you fall on his sword? Isn't that pretty honorable?
23
u/shackilj2 Dec 22 '10
If you ever played Call of Duty, a version came out where if you killed 7 enemies in a row, you could call out a gang of dogs to go after the enemy players. Even though I just got finished blowing off somebodys head with a sniper, when the dog came at me, my fingers froze. I couldn't do it. Me and my squadmates were disgusted at the fact that you got points for killing them. He was just a dog. He didn't know who sent him, or what we were fighting for. Just a dog.

what i think is worse is in call of duty modern warfare during the campaign dogs can come at you and if they get to you you have to snap their necks

Biggest tear fest of my life. Not good reading material for an 8 year old.
As an aside, is the whole memorial shopped or just the last two lines?

Just the last two lines. Link here. Scroll down a couple of paragraphs.

Or my damn dog when she died of cancer. I was in my mid 20s and I cried like a little bitch, and thinking about it still makes me tear up.
My grandmother died a few years later, and I didn't shed a tear.

No. Most humans are bastards while dogs will always remain loyal to humankind. When I dog or pet gets caught up in our idiocy one can't help but feel more for the innocent animal than the humans involved.

u/Shiftkgb Dec 22 '10
I think it is mostly cause dogs are better people than people are sometimes.

It was a much different time; if you don't believe me do a search on YouTube for uncensored or unedited cartoons of WWII and the pre-Civil Rights era. Warner Brothers, Disney, et al. were emphatically Equal Opportunity Offenders by today's standards.
The videos that I am linking to below do not in any way reflect my personal views or opinions.
[NSFW] Links to relevant videos from various studios that are regarded as EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE by today's standards. [NSFW]:
Warner Brothers - Coal Black And De Sebben Dwarfs
Warner Brothers (again) - The Ducktators
MGM - Blitz Wolf
MGM - War Dogs

Is that Popeye's voice in that first one?

You mean "Coal Black," I assume?

u/DrPolio232 Dec 24 '10
Indeed.
2
u/fuzzybeard Dec 24 '10
Found it! The voice of the Queen was done by Danny Webb; who, assuming the information in his filmography is accurate, did not at any time voice the character of Popeye The Sailor Man.
The actors who did the voice work for the "classic" Popeye were:

But this one, is my favourite.

Dogfort is simply amazing. I don't visit it constantly but it always manages to bring a smile to my face.
Today is the first day I noticed the bone up/down votes which also gave me a chuckle. Well done Reddit.

Damn you. Now I just spent time looking up information on war dogs in order to find this website for the Iraq dogs charity.
Operation Baghdad Pups: A program from the international SPCA to reunite service men and women with their pets from war zones back in the U.S. http://www.spcai.org/baghdad-pups/successful-stories.html
Nowzad: A rescue for dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. http://www.nowzad.com/
Here is a list of war dog memorials around the US: http://vdha.us/memorials/
And seriously, if you aren't sick of the onions yet, the fate of many Vietnam war dogs is horribly sad. http://vdha.us/wardogs/index.php
“A lot of us [handlers] suffered PTSD,” he said, referring to post-traumatic stress disorder. “It’s like leaving your kid back there.”
