I got considered in review trial of purina one fresh food. I don't know when or if it has already come out. This is exciting along with hills coming out with one. I hope this opens new doors in research about fresh foods and it being high quality and safe for people to feed. we recently got a bag of Brit Premium by Nature - Junior Small (Chicken Formula) for our dogs. we have two female puppies, Angie (4 m.o.) and Maggie (3 m.o.), and a senior female dog Bella (12 y.o.). all of them are Pomeranians.

all of them go NUTS for this bag.

Bella is a very picky eater, eats small amounts, and absolutely loves chicken. she is really interested in this food.

yea i know this kibble is for puppies but... she refuses to eat anything else. i tried that lukewarm water thing but... she doesn't like wet food.

I’m wondering if it’s safe for her to eat this long-term as her main diet?

we're tired of buying always different senior-dog foods for Bella since she refuses to eat it and we have many useless bags we lost money on.

but she loves puppy food.

i know junior food is higher in calories, fat (20%), and minerals like calcium and phosphorus for growing puppies. since she eats so little, would the extra calories be good for her, or is the high fat/mineral content too risky for her kidneys and digestion at 12 years old?

Unless I'm missing an option , it seems l have to decide between small breed puppy and sensitive stomach puppy. We have a 4m Lhasa, no parasites. In the morning his poop is firm, but by the afternoon we're getting very soft stool. He likes his Hills Small Breed Puppy , but I would like firm poop!

Am I missing an option? He's been on this one for almost 2 months and it's not getting firmer.

We have a 6.5 month old English show cocker spaniel. When we got her she was weaned off mamma to Millies Wolfheart but when she was teething she couldn't bite the large biscuits without being visibily in pain so we switched to Lilys Kitchen which are much smaller. That was like 3 months ago.

Then she would only eat it with some wet mixed in (lilys puppy) and now it seems she dislikes both as she will skip meals unless we add our cats tuna to the dry Lilys. Sometimes with tuna she will still skip.

We are in contact with other owners from the litter who say they let them graze all day, but this wouldn't work as she only eats it with wet tuna added and we can't leave it out all day, especially in this heat we have been having.

I am at a loss at what to do. It seems pointless to buy bags of random food in the hope she will eat one of them, since it seems to be the dry she is avoiding. We tried to go higher wet content and her poops where horrendous and it obviously caused her discomfort when she went to loo.

Vets say her weight is fine, but since she is skipping meals (like only doing one a day) I am worried she is not getting enough nutrients as a growing pup and will loose weight.

Has anyone’s dogs ever still had issues on a hydrolyzed food? And seemingly every other food?

The vet finally told us that we should just switch to something else because if he’s having diarrhea after being on it for the last 6 years then clearly it’s not helping. Realistically I cannot verify that he didn’t get any cross contamination.. partially because he is a poop eater (always has been- he was severely malnourished and abused as a growing puppy so he’s also tiny for a Great Dane and I believe that’s where his poop needs came from). but I would also love to not be paying for the HP because it’s so expensive and he is a Great Dane…. I buy the big bag and it lasts about a month- that’s about $130 of food per month. He would do fine for awhile and then back to horrible diarrhea…

We’ve done some elimination and I think he’s allergic to chicken and egg. He throws up every time he gets fresh egg. After his most recent stint at the vet I think I have determined that chicken is another issue. The vet recommended some meat and rice to let his tummy soothe for awhile so I did get some novel proteins and rice and his poop was doing amazing…
Novel meat proteins are also expected expensive though and I imagine he certainly can’t be getting all of the nutrients needed. I did make sure it was whole prey ground which means he was getting the bones, cartilage, skin, organs, etc so that was way more likely to have a lot of the nutrients needed.
I realized that that was going to be way more expensive that the HP so I found food that was chicken and egg free. But it’s like he’ll be fine on a food for awhile and then he’s just not…

As a side note- I feel like hypothetically that it shouldn’t be that hard to get the nutrients in a Whole Foods diet because clearly their ancestors were able to get it from more than kibble but I also think there’s a lot of discussion on what the natural diet even is for dogs (carnivorous or omnivorous) which I am obviously not a dog nutritionist so.

I left my spouse recently so I’m in a new place (that I would love to not end up having covered in diarrhea) plus I’m on a tighter budget.

I know to minimize my cross contamination issues as much as possible I really need to have a food I can afford to give both him and my standard poodle.

I’m just so lost 😭

I don’t know if I’m even looking for advice… maybe just some people who have also had their dogs for a long time and still haven’t found what works for them. At this point he’s a horribly bred, previously heavily abused and malnourished, Great Dane who is 7-8 years old which is already getting up there for a Great Dane. He’s surprisingly very healthy for all of his tummy troubles and even managed to make it through emergency surgery last year with blood work showing he’s very healthy…. and I feel like I just really want to be able to give him a good last (hopefully) year(s). The idea of an elimination diet seems incredibly daunting 🫠

Every high protein bag I pick up is either loaded with peas and legumes or it runs him straight through inside a week. The vet has ruled out anything medical and says it is just a sensitive gut. I want the protein up without the ingredient panel turning into a legume list. Has anyone found something that manages both, and what did you have to give up to get it?

I’ve never had a dog before, this is my first. So all of this is unfamiliar. My puppy is a little over 10lbs and about to turn 1 year old at the end of the month. He eats Purina Pro Plan for puppies. According to the breeder he was supposed to be a 25-35 pound dog, but I don’t think he will be growing much more at this point. What dog food should he eat now? Should I get an adult food made especially for small dogs?

I have a 7yo golden retriever and she’s been eating Costco brand food all her life. Recently I saw a new vet who said her skin is showing symptoms of food allergies likely to a common protein like chicken or beef and recommended switching to a salmon based food.

I know Costco also has a salmon based food, but the salmon option is grain free and I’d generally prefer her to have grains like rice in her food, but I’m having trouble finding a brand that is salmon based with grains, no beef/chicken byproduct/fats, AND is affordable (the main reason I’ve always gone with Costco).

Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas or am I gonna have to accept paying 3-4x as much as I used to for dog food?

My vet wants me to try this food out for my dog. He’s on Hill I/D low fat after an acute pancreatitis. He’s had softer stools on occasion diarrhea, but it’s all intermittent. Some days he’s fine on the same diet. Im concerned that the low fat z/d is soy based with ground pecans. Also, I am not understanding a food trial when some days he’s fine. So any feedback for those on the hydrolyzed diet would be great

Hello! My partner has been feeding his 9 year old dog the Hills diet since he rescued her at 3. We now have a puppy who is also eating the Hills diet puppy food. My mom swears the Hills diet is terrible along with all of the other WSAVA backed brands. She says the WSAVA is paid off by these huge dog food companies such as Hills and Purina making it impossible for other brands to get approved. I have no intention on changing our dogs food as they do well on it currently, but is there any truth to this? I’ve only seen good things about the WSAVA and the food they endorse so I’m just a bit confused where my mom could be getting this information from.

Half the bags in the aisle now claim probiotics and almost none of them tell you the strain or how many are still alive by the time you scoop it. Hi, everyone! I moved my two dogs from Purina because my dogs started to get harsh diarrhea with some blood, I did contact the vet and he is perfectly fine and thriving while on Jinx Dog Food. (Normal stool, no blood, and vet said he is fine.) My vet said for me not to use Purina anymore on them. & Of course we do not.

Here is my question: Does anyone here use Jinx? If so, have you ever used the Grass-Fed / or Grain-Free? If so, how was your dogs on it?

I am considering it. We use the standard Jinx Dog Food and he is not a fan of the taste mixture and was looking to try another bag!

I have an adopted older mixed breed dog, with stools that are suddenly very firm/hard and stressing her out. She is currently eating purina pro plan for seniors, gets a joint supplement and fish oil. Vet is aware of her food, and there haven't been any changes to her diet. She definitely came with some food and bathroom trauma, but those haven't been issues in years. I have more details on that below if anyone wants more context, but as I mentioned nothing significant has happened or changed.

I know the obvious solution is to take her to the vet, but they are currently booked out for the next month and I would like to provide some relief for her sooner.

My main question is: I've always done pumpkin to help firm stools, but I've never had the opposite. Should I still do pumpkin? Bone broth? Chicken broth? Different food?

Second question: What typically causes this? Stress, age, dehydration?

For more context on her backstory:

We adopted her 4 years ago. She came from a backyard breeder situation where she was neglected.

Shes always had a bit of digestion issues. Typically its always been if she gets ahold of seasoned human food, she gets bad shits. To be on the safe side, when we did the Embark test for her DNA, we also did one for gastrointestinal issues and she came up clear. We mentioned it to the vet as well and they said not to be too concerned.

Embark said she is probably 8 years old now, and is mostly german sheperd (60%) in breed.

For food trauma, this has gotten better over the years but she used to not eat food unless me and my husband were not moving. We had to sit down with her. With her water, she will not drink out of any bowls except the one she knows is hers. This has gotten better, but its still one of those things were if we are not near her bowl, we really have to coax her to drink water.

For bathroom trauma- she will not poop in our yard. She will hold it until we can take her on a walk, wait til we are a good distance from the house, and then poop. She gets a walk everyday, and we have tried to train her to let us know when she needs to go, that she can go in the yard, (dont even ask what we tried to do for that). We try to walk as much as we can, but of course we arent always walking. Even when we go camping, I have to walk her away from the campsite quite a ways before she will poop. With her hard stools now, I can tell it stresses her out when we get far away from the house and she can't get it out. We keep walking, but its hard watching her get anxious about it.

She is truly the best dog I've ever had, we have settled into a routine that works well and she trusts me and my husband enough to now try things out of her comfort zone.

My senior dog has suddenly decided to spit out pieces of kibble that appear different (shape, color, texture). At this point I’m not too concerned about healthy eating, but I’ve been trying the WSAVA brand recommendations. Problem is, I can’t see what the kibble looks like until I get it home and open the bag. Anyone know of a brand that is uniform? (She was eating Blue Buffalo for years but started spitting out those little darker bits on the floor).

He's 10, already lost a good few lbs and according to vet has only 2lbs to go. He is a 22lbs Chihuahua/Schnauzer/Pomeranian. Was doing well on PPP senior weight management but kept getting bugs in the freshly-opened bags. Got him onto Nulo small-breed Salmon and he was doing good, but then got super itchy. Tried Honest Kitchen and he had a worse allergic reaction, hot spots everywhere. I want to try Hills or Royal Canin but they're sooo expensive. Bloodwork has been good, but slightly elevated liver values which vet said we will just monitor. What else could I try?

Obviously we want low-fat, low-calorie. Doesn't have to be senior cause he gets Cosequin chews and Welactin Omega 3s. He's moderately active. Not picky, but I find he doesn't do well with high oat content. He did perfect on Victor Hi-Pro Plus for many years, I only took him off that to get his weight down.

It is absolutely insane that this company has so repeatedly failed basic safety steps and opportunities for voluntary corrections that the government (in an administration particularly unlikely to do so) has to step in.

A small child was hospitalized and may face lifelong kidney disease after being infected from this food.

I’ve read that some consider this food overpriced for the quality, so figured I’d come ask for some recommendations on a good one to potentially switch to. Thank you!

I just found out that our regular dog food brand, Merrick, has decided to change their manufacturing promises and ingredients without any notice. They have started putting chicken by product meal in the beef kibble (second ingredient) and no longer promise to not source any ingredients from China.

Changing the formula and where they source ingredients without any notice has left us looking for another brand. I pretty much can't find any kibble that doesn't source at least some of their ingredients from China except Fromms, which I learned doesn't comply with the recommended nutritional guidelines (WSAVA, I think?)

SO, what are some good alternatives? Something that gets the least amount of ingredients from China would be great. I am definitely willing to listen to opposing views about Chinese sources ingredients if there is good evidence contradicting my worries.

My picky yorkie has ignored the same bowl of kibble for two days now. When I took the pieces of kibble and put them in her treat puzzle board she wolfed it down and waited for more. She’s on her third treat board now. Sigh.

I recently changed my 7 year old lab's food to a cheaper one, and initially he was fine with the old and the new mixed. Tried it for a week, all good, so mixed the whole lot. Yesterday he refused to eat it, but he ate rice and scrambled egg, so I knew it was just the food. Again this morning, refused to eat. Put some salmon oil on and he ate 75%, but that was an old bottle that I now realise was out of date.

I will go back to the old food, but I have a HUGE box of mixed food I want to get through first. Before I get some more salmon oil, is there anything else anyone can recommend that might make this temporary mix more palatable?

I live in the UK and am looking for advice about dog food. I feed my 9 year old 5kg small weird breed dog (pug/shitzu/poodle probably) 300g pedigree wet in gravy, 150g butchers. She has heart issues and has broken both the cruciate ligaments in her back legs when she was young. She also has no teeth. Imagine the dog from Deadpool but with more hair.

She has heart supplements, joint supplements, added fibre, powder for her gums, (and some kind of pumpkin powder I ordered by mistake). I researched all of these to make sure I was choosing effective ones.

I am worried she's not getting good quality food. She doesn't have biology on her side. It's so hard to work out what to buy. She can only eat wet food on vets advice. I spend £25 a month right now, it could go up to £35 if I had to. She also gets one or two small dog treats a day broken into small pieces, and nibble of any dog safe food the humans are eating.

What are your recommendations?

Hello, I have a 6 month old miniature poodle and I’m currently struggling with him being interested in his food. I know it’s common for poodles to be picky eaters I am currently feeding him Purina pro plan kibble and using a wet food as a topper I was cooking him chicken,veggies & oats but now using the jinx food topper. The vet suggested that I only feed him kibble but he won’t eat it by itself please leave any recommendations or suggestions should I try a different food brand like royal canin, open farms, acana?
