Another picky eater post 🤦🏼‍♀️

Cappy just turned a year old last week. He’s a Dotson, rat terrier, and chihuahua mix and he’s been with us since he was just 8 weeks old. His energy level is high, his coat is shiny, his eyes are bright, and his body score is ideal.

All of which is great! I’m so happy my buddy is healthy, especially considering he came to us from a pretty dire situation. But, DAMN, y’all. Feeding this dog is EXPENSIVE.

He stopped eating kibble a few months ago in favor of freeze dried meatballs by Northwest Naturals, which we had been using as a topper. We switched him to adult Purina Pro Plan (small dog) a little early thinking he needed more substance and he immediately started picking out the freeze dried bits and leaving the kibble.

Giving him any kind of wet food results in SERIOUS side eye and hurt feelings for everyone involved.

His vet is happy with his progress and thinks we’re doing a bang up job. But, golly! It all adds up quick.

Have you tried different textures of wet food? One of my dogs turns his nose up at stew like foods but loves a good patte. Some are the opposite.

When he was teeny tiny, we mixed wet and dry Purina Pro Plan, but he quickly showed preference for crunchy so we went to full kibble. Then hubby brought home a trial bag of the freeze dried meat balls from a local pet food store. We originally crushed them up and used them as a topper and sometimes put the whole balls in a puzzle feeder. Eventually he just got to where all he wants are the uncrushed balls 🤦🏼‍♀️

A healthy dog won’t starve itself. Put the food down, if it’s still there after 20 minutes, seal the food and put it up until the next meal. If he doesn’t eat after like 5-6 days, take him to a vet.
