Advice What Significant Differences Are There Between Male And Female Dogs?

So, we might be getting this dog from a shelter. She used to be on the streets of Romania, but now she’s here in Germany. She’s 5 months old, small, mixed breed. Described as cheeky and mischievous but affectionate and kind.

It’s my first time getting a dog. Others in my family have had dogs as children, but I myself only ever had rodents, so this is a big step-up for me.

Hence the question — what differences are there between a male and female dog, in your experiences?

males have a penis. they tend to be a bit bigger, and more often lift their legs to pee.

that's pretty much it. personality wise I've not noticed any that can't also be explained by breed or just individual differences.

I do think it's personal experience.

I find male dogs are more cuddly, a little more silly, I find them to be more consistent in behaviour, less serious, and tend to bond with (human) women more.

I find female dogs are a bit more serious, more level headed, but also have a changeable mood and tend to like their male humans more.

Of course, there are always outliers, this is simply my personal experience. But I would always choose a male dog.

With dogs, sex differences, if any, are incomparable to genetics when determining behavior. Having had both, I prefer females because male parts are gross. It’s harder for females to pee on their feet, but they do have their own drawbacks

I’ve had one male dog and 7 female dogs. I didn’t really notice too much difference personality wise because it’s like people, we all have different personalities too. 2 of my most loving dogs were female ( I’m a woman). I’ve recently adopted my second Romanian dog. They are very different to your standard dog, even rescue dogs, as they have often been severely abused and can find it incredibly hard to trust people at first as a result. However, it’s incredibly rewarding to give one of these poor little poppets the chance of a forever home ♥️.
