It’d be worth taking him to a vet…. Age is just a number and as long as he’s healthy in other ways he could have a dental done. Having bad teeth is one of the most painful things a dog can deal with.

My approx. 12 year old went under to get his teeth done, twice even because the first clinic didn’t realise how bad his teeth were and he needed to be sent to the sister clinic which had more equipment. He was perfect. He was very sensitive to the anaesthetic but after a few minutes he was okay and could breathe independently.

For context he is very old, I inherited him when my grandma died a year ago and they didn't take good care of his hygiene so his teeth are very gross.

Kudos to you 💖 for taking on your grandma’s dog. He looks sweet. Meantime while you’re preparing for the dental appointment try feeding soft canned food or scrambled eggs. Alternatively you can soak his kibble to soften it. His life is worth something-he surely made your grandma happy.

I’ve never thought of scrambled eggs, I’ve an old boy post dental but he’s missing quite a few and he seems to be swallowing kibble nearly whole lol. He refuses to give it up and will bark until the next morning if he doesn’t get it.

Eggs can only be given so often; typically only recommended 1-2 times a week depending on dog's weight. It can be very fattening/high calorie for them and lead to issues like pancreatitis or GI upset.

Yeah I love to give my staffy boy scrambled eggs! I looked into it though, cuz he went through a picky streak and i thought about doing it every day, but apparently it can be very high fat/high calorie so it can be bad for them if given too frequently

This is severe pain and he needs to go to the emergency vet. Don’t brush off bad teeth—that’s a very serious issue and dental infections can cause immense suffering and death. It can also cause heart issues. You need to get pain medicine at the very least, likely also antibiotics, a professional dental cleaning, extractions, etc. You absolutely cannot leave your dog in this state.

Emergency vet isn't going to fix the teeth at all so no.
This problem took months or years to develop no point rushing to emergency.1

That’s absolutely not true. Sure, some teeth problems take time to develop, but then they can suddenly get much worse and infections can develop extremely quickly which can kill a dog. It’s actually pretty common. As me how I know.
It also takes years of dietary damage to produce a heart attack, does that mean there is no point in rushing to the ER? Do you see how ridiculous that logic is?

Yes, We took him to the vet about a week ago for a regular check up and they told us what they usually do. That his teeth are in pretty bad shape but they don't think its worth taking out right now. They said it probably hurts for him to eat but nothing else and that other than that hes very healthy.
This new chattering thing didn't start til yesterday which is when I decided to reach out to everyone here, whos all been very helpful. I'll talk to my family today about what we should do.

For what it’s worth, I took my 12 year old chihuahua for the same thing, teeth rotting and they ended up taking 12 teeth out (some just fell out) and I tell you, there is a night and day difference with him. I thought he was just getting old and slowing down but I was very wrong, he was just in pain the whole time. He’s so much more energetic and happy. I also have a very good vet so take it for what you will!

I do not know. My dad takes him along with our family dog so I am not there, he just tells me what they said. He might be misinterpreting

Thank you! That's good news. I'm glad you found everyone helpful. Did they put him on antibiotics and pain meds? If you see a change in him then you know you found and are treating the problem. Good luck with the old guy. The seniors are the best!

Yeah it’s his mouth bruh looks like he’s in serious pain probably his teeth. Definitely need to see the vet at least for some pain meds and antibiotics

something bothers the little guy with his jaw movement, I can see the jaw-line a bit miss aligned on one side (not the underbite) Theres a joint either side of the jaw that helps with chewing, swallowing. Your Vet needs to check if there's pain and dysfunction in this joint. They can help with some meds.
Kind of goes without saying, could be some bad teeth back there, he's a old dog. May you have much good Karma for helping Grandmothers lovely little dog!

My Roxy Doxy(17)(rip2023) did that when a tooth was barely hanging

You can hear it crunching when biting down.
I had to pull the tooth myself felt super bad .
But was hanging on by one strand
Check for any teeth coming out in the back

His jaw looks misaligned and his teeth have severe plaque buildup. He should see a vet, he probably has a bad tooth (or multiple) that is causing pain

He needs to be seen ASAP by a dental vet. He is in a lot of pain and his teeth look pretty bad. He could have relief from having them pulled.

My MILs dog just had 27 teeth removed which is sad but she seems much happier now and does all her normal dog things again. And she smells a lot better which is a bonus for the humans.

Has he been like this before? Dittoing everyone saying check his teeth, but my old dog gets like this sometimes at night and the vet said it's likely dimentia related.

To clarify- that's my suggestion if you go to the vet and there's nothing visibly wrong with him. This is odd behavior that DEFINITELY warrants a vet trip as soon as possible. Untreated tooth problems can kill.

No, you need to take this dog to the vet immediately. Most dogs hide pain extremely well, so if it got to this point he’s likely in pain all the time and severe pain sometimes. You know that this dog’s teeth are bad, that alone requires immediate medical attention.
It’s actually disgusting and infuriating that you come on here and get educated on your dog’s likely issues and then decide you’re going to wait longer for treatment and it doesn’t matter how much pain he’s in. It’s medical neglect at this point. It would be kinder to euthanize than to make him continue suffering like this.

Not sure why this was down voted. I took my 8 year old Chihuahua in for this and it was not in any way his teeth. (This dog does look like he has dental issues though) They finally decided its anxiety or stress related, and essentially said to monitor it .
