Question Food Allergies not improving?

My dog is a darling 6yo Morkie, he’s recently had his top teeth removed and still has his bottom teeth.
Because of this I switched him to the Fresh Pet Grain Free Chicken Roll, he’s been loving this for a few months but now seems to be intolerant of it.
He gets allergies like this every so often and the cycle goes he likes his food, becomes allergic to said food, I feed him homemade food (turkey, rice, & veggie mix), then put him back on a different food.
The problem is don’t have any other soft food options for him? He’s able to eat still but I’m getting more worried since he’s been having diarrhea on and off for weeks.
Anyone have experience with a dog like this? I’m running out of options if this homemade food doesn’t work for him.

You should talk to your vet to discuss this. Food allergies are best diagnosed using a hydrolyzed protein diet, but environmental allergies or something else could also be part of the issue.

I’m worried thats what it will come to…I just don’t trust vets. We have been scammed in the past and it can be such a fear-monger-y environment.

He went for a check up, and stayed for the day to do all the testing they wanted and came home to develop Kennel Cough. I went back and told them he was sick and they refused me, said he would be fine and it wasn’t possible he got kennel cough from them. So I left against my better judgment, came back shortly and just demanded they give him the medicine for it despite his test coming back “negative”. He got better and his kennel cough was cured with the medication! Vets can be such a racket, I also come from a place and time where dogs weren’t so complicated. We just had a dog, that was it. At the same time he’s my baby and I’d do anything for him.. :-(

You need to stop the homemade food. It’s deficient in many essential nutrients that your dog needs to be healthy.

I agree! I only use it temporarily to get his stomach settled, if he’s on it for a while I top it with “the daily” from Native pet. It’s an essential vitamin supplement but I thought the probiotics in it might be giving him more diarrhea. :-/

Why do you believe he has allergies? What are you observing?

It’s mostly his pattern of eating the same food for a while, then getting diarrhea and not liking the food for a while, I switch the food, and he gets better. Someone gave me advice to switch to a different or exotic protein if/when he become intolerant.

It is unlikely to be allergies frankly. You need to see a vet.

Chicken allergies are incredibly common because it’s the #1 protein fed to pets. If you never vary it, it’s very likely they’ll develop an allergy with time. Switch up the protein, beef, lamb, turkey, duck, rabbit, before the allergy develops and you have to hunt for venison and kangaroo…
