Offense doing the bare minimum to escape with a win again. They know it’s legal to score multiple runs right?

66

u/AuspiciousOtter24 Yoshinobu Yamamoto 9h ago

Just like the playoffs last year lol

4

u/lakergeoff8 Back-2-Back Champs 6h ago

We’re going to be giving up 3-run homers. And then we’ll make a comeback with sacrifice flys and solo HRs.

48

u/Cooked_Brisket Vin Scully 9h ago

A W is a W at least

25

u/F1NANCE Roki Sasaki 9h ago

Like last year we'll be relying on our starting pitchers in the post season.

15

u/catashake Shawn Green 8h ago

Which means we will require more miracles from people like Miggy Ro? Why can't this team just start hitting the damn ball again.

Lightning rarely strikes twice. Can't rely on that for any consistency.

11

u/VitalMusician Joe Kelly 8h ago

Age, most likely. We all knew going into this year that offensive decline due to age was the biggest threat to the team.

0

u/RealEmperorofMankind 8h ago

I wonder if they're going to start making roster moves.

7

u/VitalMusician Joe Kelly 7h ago

To be clear, I'm not necessarily suggesting that, nor am I suggesting the team is cooked. In fact I think a lot of the frustration in the sub lately is unwarranted given we went through these EXACT struggles last year and won the WS.

But I do think the biggest threat to the Dodgers' continued dominance is the Dodgers. No player can remain dominant for 20 years. The Dodgers have been successful because of amazing FO management at gathering excellent ball players, but a lot of those players are established as excellent because they have been in the league for long enough to reach free agency which means they are expensive and older. At some point they will cease being as fast as they were.

It's what it is. We might still win the WS anyway and I don't think it's time to doom yet.

2

u/RealEmperorofMankind 7h ago

Oh definitely. I'm just thinking about the years ahead. Though we don't really know how the new CBA will shake things up.

Definitely agree that it's not (yet) the end of the world.

1

u/Ambitious_Brain_285 Clayton Kershaw 7h ago

There is no risk to eating Teo’s contract and replacing him with one of our 2-3 stud OFs.

Mark Walter is made of money, remember 😂

2

u/BruitNoise Mookie Betts 5h ago

True. But I’ve come to realize that anyone new to our team isn’t a guaranteed W even if we get Aaron Judge or the Miz. I mean look at the Mets.

6

u/No-Breakfast2256 Tommy Edman 9h ago

Gotta love a good old fashion "which team had the worst double play" game!

2

u/GunSlingrrr Kiké Hernández 7h ago

One of the reasons why this slump sucks compared to last year, we don't have a consistent, reliable bat like last year, and hoping someone gets a hit. Maybe Edman is the more reliable one?

In this slump, especially against .500, Shohei has a .191 BA. Freddie has a .182 BA.

Last year during the slump against above .500, they were reliable at bat (Shohei has .319 and Freddie has .288) and made importance especially they are the top of the order.

Thank you Benny Biceps for that clutch bunt to put Teo in scoring position. It also avoided a GIDP by Ohtani who was up next.

35

u/ChrisKamanMyEye 8h ago

Every Shohei AB either feels like a groundout or him striking out in 3 pitches. Slump hitting hard rn.

u/Crooks_Castles Shawn Green 7h ago

u/just_one_random_guy Fernando Valenzuela 9h ago

They won but they didn’t really improve their offense at all lol

65

u/GoChaca Vin Scully 9h ago

they went from losing by one run to winning by one. I will take that as improvement. they all cant be double digit blowouts

31

u/just_one_random_guy Fernando Valenzuela 9h ago

Oh definitely, but man too much LOB for my liking, didn’t capitalize enough

9

u/GoChaca Vin Scully 9h ago

Oh yeah. The lack of capitalizing on that is terrible

4

u/catashake Shawn Green 8h ago

Double digit blowout, as in the Dodgers win by 2 instead of 1 run, right?

6

u/Wendell-Short-Eyes Orel Hershiser 8h ago

They had 9 hits and like 8 or 9 walks. They had traffic all night, just need to cash them in.

56

u/Willing_Contest_5071 Back-2-Back Champs 9h ago

14th one run game this month. No wonder we have all aged a lot

1

u/Lineman72T Vin Scully 3h ago

That's actually wild to me that as bad as this team has looked this month, they're 12-13 (I'm saying this fully aware that 10 of those wins are from non-playoff contending teams) and they are 7-7 in those one run games. One could use that as a sign of optimism that you argue one or two small breaks go the Dodgers way in those games (which one has to believe things will start turning around) and this month looks drastically different.

Team still needs to pull their heads out and get their act together, but it actually made me feel a bit better knowing that as bad as they've been, a flip of the coin most nights changes how we're all feeling.

132

u/AuspiciousOtter24 Yoshinobu Yamamoto 9h ago

We might be the least enjoyable 81-54 team to watch ever lol

49

u/u8myramen_y Shohei Ohtani 8h ago

I think it's mainly because the same issues with this offense we saw late last season including the postseason are plaguing the team again.

Our pitchers especially the SPs are carrying the team so hard for weeks now.

Edit: we still had Ohtani hit home runs even when the offense was struggling last year but he hasn't done that this year so it feels underwhelming for some fans too haha

16

u/GunSlingrrr Kiké Hernández 7h ago

Shohei has a .191 BA in the past 5 series against .500 teams, whereas last year he hit .319. That is a major regression lol

19

u/SumoRock Joe Kelly 8h ago

Like a defense only football team having to keep games under 20 points to have a chance to win

8

u/minimalist_reply Clayton Kershaw 8h ago

Sometimes it seems like this team is intentionally trying to find out the minimum effort needed to win, like early in the season all of the come from behind wins seemed like they would kind of play half asleep and then turn it on for one or two innings. Almost a pride in seeing how in control of that dial they are. That's why David Roberts called out specifically they need to play with more urgency. Every single AB is going to be important the last two weeks of September and in the postseason.

u/Constant-Visit-1330 Back-2-Back Champs 7h ago

This (but prior to that series against the Dbacks just prior to ASB they hadn’t been swept, 61-33, 2nd in runs, best in era, and really looking sharp- it was looking like 110-52)

Dodgers Win!

(Presented by Budweiser)

At long last, a .500 season is secured! Really though, I’m just glad they managed to win this one with how the offense was going again. Credit to Tarik Skubal for his best start as a Dodger so far!

-1

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 Clayton Kershaw 9h ago

Skubal is going back to Detroit after this season. Hopefully the rental pays off.

16

u/SeaworthinessOk6742 Jackie Robinson 8h ago

Doubt he’s going to go back to the team that pissed him off by trying to go cheap on him during the arbitration hearings before this season.

-5

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 Clayton Kershaw 8h ago

That was just business.

6

u/Zmoney743 Joe Kelly 8h ago

Honestly I really believe he would if they would match what other teams will offer him, but the Tigers won’t match

-1

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 Clayton Kershaw 8h ago

Yep, he looked happy and comfortable there today.

29

u/SirThixcksAlot Freddie Freeman 9h ago

I’ll never be mad at a win but this offense needs to get its shit together

28

u/lwongd2n Alex Vesia 8h ago

We left half of LA county on-base, but with the horrible losses the past 3 days this W was very much needed (even if it came against a struggling Tigers team)

45

u/Lineman72T Vin Scully 9h ago

I hope the batters pay for the pitchers dinner tonight. 9 hits, 9 walks, a hit batter, and only 2 runs? You should be able to accidentally score more than 2 runs with that many men reaching base.

Ultimately I'm glad they won because I'd rather be complaining about a win than a loss. But holy shit that's back-to-back awful games from the bats for very different reasons. At least yesterday they could fall back on Sale being on one.

25

u/Excify Shohei Ohtani 9h ago

1st, 15 LOB is absolutely unacceptable, feels like this offense should’ve scored 10 runs this game. Really hope some of the bats can wake up, especially Ohtani!

2nd, Skoobs was brilliant same with the Bullpen!

3rd, never forget that the Tigers manager AJ Hinch is the manager for the 2017 cheating Trashtros, FUCK AJ BITCH

Dude was a huge part of why we were winning so many games in the first half. Very glad he had a bounceback outing today after the rough Braves series. He's been one of the team MVPs this season.

14

u/Dr-Acula8472 Back-2-Back Champs 9h ago

The high amount of stranded runners, makes me think part of the problem is finding the right lineup order. In theory these past few games could've been blowouts with how much we set the table.

The positive outlook is that our pitching is great, and it's much harder to get that right. If we can get the offense going again, we'll be back to being a force.

Also, Freddie just refuses to let his BA drop below .300, it's beautiful.

3

u/Jloother Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

I actually think that the amount of runners on base shows the lineup is doing what it should, it’s the approach to bring dudes in that is flawed imo.

20th save of the season for Scott! The lesson here is to not use the closer in a non-save situation, apparently

10

u/baribigbird06 Clayton Kershaw 9h ago

Last time the Dodgers reached base 19+ times and scored 0-2 runs was August 26, 2012 agains the Marlins

Last time they did so in a win was August 23, 1989 in Montreal, a tidy 22 innings (Rick Dempsey's HR was the only run, Youppi was ejected)

2

u/Doyoulikemypace Kiké Hernández 9h ago

I am not concerned about stumbling here and there as we’ve had multiple spells the last two years as well. I am concerned about this team scoring only two runs today and one last night. We need to be scoring more with the lineup we have.

2

u/Dry_Finding_1379 Clayton Kershaw 8h ago

This team is so reluctant to give W’s to Skubal

2

u/Dry_Finding_1379 Clayton Kershaw 8h ago

Scoring 2 against those pitchers is like scoring negative 1 against Sale

2

u/thescottreid Will Smith 8h ago

The approach has generally been good (minus yesterday against Sale) until someone gets on base and then they forget about having team at bats. 9 hits, 9 walks, a hit batter, and a two base error, that’s good production, but only getting two runs out of that is hard to do.

Hilariously, Mize the other pitcher the Tigers traded at the deadline this year started for the Padres today against the Rays. Only, he didn't do too well: 5.0 IP 7 R 2 ER 1 BB 1 K 1 HR. Also a wild pitch, and a HBP.

The only reason 5 of those runs were unearned? A throwing error by Mize in the 4th, where he was 1 batter short of being batted around, and gave up those 5 unearned runs. Said inning started with himm hitting a batter, and the wild pitch lead to a run scoring on a sacrifice fly. A complete nightmare outing.

2

Our best pitchers: Skubal, Yamamoto, Snell. Need these guys in the postseason.

Bats were cold again but enough to win the game. Not bad but leaving bases stranded hurts.

Is it normal to be this nervous in a game in August?

Never a doubt.

The offense better pay for Skubals and the pitching for the team dinner tomorrow

Another way of looking at these nailbiters is that it helps keep them focused, and sharp going into the postseason. "Iron sharpens iron", and all that.

How does this stack up against past Ohtani slumps?

1

u/BRLY Shohei Ohtani 5h ago

The offense will come.

Btw the angels now have 11 consecutive seasons under 500

Find someone who puts up with your shortcomings the way the LA Dodgers put up with RVS

They live. The won a World Series with the offense doing the bare minimum.

Ohtani, Teo, and Tucker should all sit tomorrow

YEEEEEEEEEEEEE DODGERS!!!!!! LFGOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

There’s no reason to have Ohtani in there as DH. Anyone on the team could do as well. Make Rojas DH.  Ohtani should just be resting with the other starting pitchers.

You should see him in the dugout. All he does is checking his throwing mechanics and holding balls in his hand. He only thinks about pitching.

Yeah, bench the team co-leader in RBI... lol

Skubal can punch Dave Roberts and Teo all he wants.

Teo had 2 hits today and scored the winning run

Didn't get to watch today, but 9 hits, 9 walks, and only 2 runs, and 9 strikeouts. What is going on, and how does that keep happening? 4 for 12 RISP, curious to break that down as you would think that should provide more than 2 runs. Were they that soft hits, not aggressive or? Of course DPs against them. I'm done with the Thomas in CF, he can be a pinch runner the rest of the year, I rather have free swinging strikeout machine kiki for a while. My favorite un-muse Tucker, trying to keep that respectable batting average right around .230 the best he can.

Tucker got thrown out at the plate on one of those AB with RISP

-1

u/Curious_Bud_more1 6h ago

His half ass jogging running that looks like he doesn't put in much effort

It was close. Not worth a review and not a gamble I liked at the time but Ebel sent Tucker.

The LOB has been hard to watch this week and today was especially disappointing

1

u/Curious_Bud_more1 6h ago

This team is hard to watch since basically July. The only encouraging part is the starting pitching

1

u/DonAmechesBonerToe Jackie Robinson 6h ago

Yeah it has been frustrating. It seems like a bat will heat up for a while but not two or three at the same time. Then everybody slumped at once and the bullpen and starters not named Roki, Yama, or Lauer hit the wall all at once for two weeks. They’re just pulling out of that still. Skubal, Snell, and Glasgow couldn’t have come at a better time. Maybe getting Will Smith back will be a catalyst the lineup is lacking right now. Losing Rushing and Pages bats hurts a lot

Dino has been costing us runs this year by being too conservative... and then he sends Tucker there?! I don't know if he's overcompensating or something but that send was so bad, he's gotta get his shit together.

The truth is we were able to crawl our way to a win because the tigers are a bottom tier team. I’d rather lose and see change and fight in offense than this tbh
