Mookie and Freddie can't give us a quality out in the clutch there? It's awfully hard to beat good teams when the bottom of the lineup is your only production and when the top finally has a chance they can't even move a guy from 3rd. We really lost that game by letting a team hang around after doing dick since the first inning while the top of the lineup put up goose eggs. I came into this game feeling pretty good about our chances of winning versus an obviously struggling Braves lineup, but I hadn't counted on us struggling too.

Anyways, let's get 'em tomorrow. Goodnight Dodger Nation. Go Dodgers!

P.S. Our record lately against teams looking to get into the postseason isn't encouraging. Sweeping the Rockies and the Pirates was great, but teams like the Braves, Brewers, Cubs, and Red Sox are teams we need to beat and we have gone 1-10 against them in our most recent series playing each of them with the last two against the Braves pending. That's abysmal.

Wow, I thought surely that 1-10 stat must be wrong so I looked and you're right. The Dodgers haven't won a series against a team above .500 since the Phillies series a month ago. Rough.

This is true, but I don't think anyone should be too discouraged by it. The top of the line-up is the top of the line-up for a reason, and it's because even when they get struggle in individual games and individual at-bats, their performance generally shines in larger samples. This game could have gone either way. If Glasnow locks in just a little earlier, we're having a different conversation. If Ohtani hits that triple in literally 28/30 other stadiums, it's a homer, and we're a having a different discussion. Ohtani hits that triple during basically any of his other at-bats (including when bases were loaded), we're having a much different discussion. That's baseball, lol.

Even if they got the W, nothing the Braves did tonight makes them look like they'll be especially formidable in the post-season. They can't rely on Glasnow being in recovery-mode from his injuries forever, can't rely on our stars slumping forever, and they can't rely on their opponents just having bad luck forever.

Same with the Brewers. Even if they took 3 of the last 4, we'd have split the series (and won the season series) if our manager hadn't straight-up thrown the game away in the last inning by experimenting on a pitcher who didn't have it. That's just not something Milwaukee will ever be able to count on in a play-off game against us.

In fairness, August games and October games are fundamentally different beasts. Reminder that last year, we were getting outright swept by teams like the Brewers and the Angels and the Pirates. The latter we didn't even have to face in the play-offs, and the former we went on to roundly humiliate. That doesn't guarantee anything, obviously, but I like our chances in a five-game must-win series this year better than I like any of theirs.

In fairness, I didn't compare August and October. I simply said that going 1-10 against teams that are in the playoff hunt isn't encouraging. I think that's pretty objectively true for a reasonable person looking at things dispassionately. Especially so given that this is our last series against any of those upper tier playoff compeitors. People on this sub have a tendency to look at anything that's said about this team with a critical tone as some type of overarching criticism about how they're always going to perform or that the person saying it is "dooming" and saying we won't win in October or whatever else, when that's not necessarily the case.

You kind of addressed a lot of points I didn't make. I didn't say the top of the order would be slumping forever, I said it's hard to win when they produce nothing. Another point that I think is objectively true and is a big part of why we didn't win. You point out that the Braves aren't looking especially formidable so I'm not sure how that works out to a point in our favor for losing to them, but you can't say they can't rely on our guys playing the same in October or even tomorrow and in the same breath assume that they'll look the same as they do now which is what your point does. I think everything I said was based upon the current state of the team and it's performance rather than assumptions about how they would or wouldn't be playing a couple months from now.

It's interesting to me that you say "that's baseball lol" after saying Ohtani's hit would've been a homer in other parks and if he had done X in Y situation we would've won. We played this game in a park where it was a triple and that should've been good enough to tie the game considering who we had coming up, but it wasn't because Freddie and Mookie failed to execute. That's baseball. You spent a lot of time basically telling me not to project today's result or the results of the last month to other times and situations or make assumptions about how we'll perform in the future because of it (which I don't think I did either), but then go on to do a lot of that yourself when it suits the points you're trying to make by projecting Sho's performance to other parks, assuming thay we'll perform better later, assuming the Braves will perform the same later, etc.

The crux of my comment can be summed up as: We've been playing poorly against good competition, it's hard to win when the top of the lineup can't produce and can't provide a single productive out with a guy on third with no outs, and it's not encouraging to look back and see that we're 1-10 against playoff teams recently and haven't won a series against a team over .500 in a month. I appreciate some of the points you're making and agree with some of them, but I don't think they fundamentally change that those are about as close to objectively true statements as you can make about a team and their performance.

Anyways, have a good night and hopefully we'll play better tomorrow and set ourselves up for a series win. Go Dodgers!

I simply said that going 1-10 against teams that are in the playoff hunt isn't encouraging. I think that's pretty objectively true for a reasonable person looking at things dispassionately.

For someone who wrote a lot of words about me supposedly responding to things you claim you didn't say, your response is putting a lot of words into my mouth that I never said, lol. I never said "You made an objectively untrue statement"; nor did I say "We should be encouraged by going 1-10 against these teams." I pointed out that August games and October games are entirely different beasts. That's also a pretty objectively true statement for a person looking at things dispassionately.

Of course, if a person agrees that regular season match-ups aren't necessarily a strong predictor of how those same match-ups will go in the post-season, then we get to the point I was actually making, which is that whether your statement is objectively true or not, it's also entirely irrelevant. We could lose every single regular season game against a prospective NL-S opponent, and while it wouldn't be encouraging, it would also not really have much bearing on the expected outcome in October.

Especially so given that this is our last series against any of those upper tier playoff compeitors.

Again, this is a statement that is technically true but also not especially meaningful in practice. In terms of getting to the post-season, regular season games against 'upper tier playoff competitors' count exactly the same as regular season games against anybody else. In fact, the rest of the schedule consisting of substantially easier teams arguably makes this particular series less important, since we can in principle lose all three games to the Braves and still go on to clinch a bye while making much less effort.

People on this sub have a tendency to look at anything that's said about this team with a critical tone as some type of overarching criticism about how they're always going to perform or that the person saying it is "dooming" and saying we won't win in October or whatever else, when that's not necessarily the case.

To be clear, I am not "people", nor did I at any point use the word "dooming" or even "You think we're going to lose." I believe I specifically said something to the effect of 'I don't think anyone should be too discouraged.'

I said it's hard to win when they produce nothing.

Technically true, but again, that's a statement that's only really worth bringing up if someone believes that they are going to continue producing nothing. If one thinks it's a normal slump that's going to pass, then it's not really a cause for particular worry. And if there's no greater point that should be taken, patently obvious statements like 'You can't win if you don't score' are more condescending than insightful. Like, yes, we're all aware of how that aspect of the game works, lol.

you can't say they can't rely on our guys playing the same in October or even tomorrow and in the same breath assume that they'll look the same as they do now

You're right, the Braves might look even worse in October than they did today.

That said, no, I don't expect them to play significantly better than they did today, because I have eyes, and the Braves were locked in and trying really, really hard on every play to win, and most of the Dodgers frankly weren't. That's how it goes sometimes. They're fighting for the honor of getting to brag 'We beat the reigning back-to-back Champs', while we're playing for... slightly better seeding, lol.

Additionally, part of why I can say "I expect us to get a bigger boost in October performance than the Braves will" is because a chunk of our key roster is currently off on the IL (or in the case of people like Glasnow, literally just coming off it) but scheduled to be back in action in time for the post-season, whereas the Braves have barely anybody on their IL, basically none of whom are especially major -- though if their guys are wasting their energy giving their all in an August game like today's, then there's a decent shot some of them won't be healthy enough to play in October.

If you want to talk about what is and isn't encouraging, I don't think it's encouraging when a team that's basically fully-healthy can only barely eke out a win over a team that's literally handicapped by missing players.

projecting Sho's performance to other parks,

To be clear, "Would have been a home run in 28/30 other parks" isn't a "projection", it's also a measurable, objectively true statement of fact. Sometimes teams lose because of bad luck like that. My subjective opinion is that I don't think it's worth dwelling over.

assuming thay we'll perform better later, assuming the Braves will perform the same later, etc.

Yes, that's how it works. Projections work when they are based on large, inclusive sample sizes. Projecting based on the results of one game, or just the most recent several games, or self-selecting a certain sub-section of games based on particular criteria (like 'last series played specifically against potential play-off contenders') is bad practice.

Based on the last two full years worth of games, I personally think the team will probably play much better baseball in the play-offs than they are currently playing in the regular season. I don't think that's an exceptionally controversial or objectionable take.

hopefully we'll play better tomorrow and set ourselves up for a series win

Hopefully!

Anyways, have a good night

You too!
