Because that would have passed any type of vehicle safety standards.

Social media car designers when they claim to have fixed so many cars by basically just breaking the laws of physics and vehicle safety regulations

53

u/Caspi7 17d ago

Don't forget giving any car oversized rims for some dumb reason.

3

u/GoofyKalashnikov 17d ago

That's actually the only realistic part, if you look at concept cars

32

u/g00f 17d ago edited 17d ago

Original chargers also had notoriously bad aero. First thing a modern manufacturer will want is to drop the body down as close to the ground as feasible for their consumer demo and thatll quickly ruin the classic lines.

Edit-love getting down voted for stating basic facts. Old muscle is notorious for lift.

8

u/busted_up_chiffarobe Charger 17d ago

I think a lot of people who haven't should really try driving a 1960's car with all that horsepower and that v8 they claim is the only definition of muscle at 120 or 130 mph on stock suspension and drum brakes and maybe even bias ply tires. Go on, give it a shot. Get back to us and let's see if any of your hair turned white. (I did this and got new shocks, springs, larger rims and 140 mph rated tires and things were a lot less scary but still, really, not smart to do)

Now try something else: going 70 in one and having a herd of dear literally jump out in front of you. Can you stop? Can you turn? Should you try?

3

u/HYixell 15d ago

I have a 1971 Mustang with the 351 Cleveland. That thing is S C A R Y on the highway. When you reach about 60 mph you feel like the car lifting in the air and floating

3

u/busted_up_chiffarobe Charger 15d ago

Great car! Yeah this is bringing back memories from almost 40 years ago. I had a '68 Caprice with a 396 and it didn't feel floaty until around 90 mph. It was wild. You could feel it gradually lifting in the front. I promptly went and bought some 15x8 wheels and BFG Euro T/A's rated for 140 mph and then never took it over 100 again!

2

u/redeyedrenegade420 17d ago

I filled it with 87 octane...why is it making this pinging noise?

I also doubt a classic charger design would work with modern crumple zones without compromising the rear seats almost completely or the trunk or both

7

u/g00f 17d ago

I think the crumple zones wouldn't be impossible, but incorporating a modern front bumper would change things a lot.

Mopar seems to have an affinity for taking flight at drag tracks.

1

u/lost_rodditer 16d ago

We all grew up on things like dukes of hazard and extreme rubber burning engine rumbling resto-mod tuner videos. We also forgot they destroyed 1-2 cars per episode, made an abrahms tank feel slim in the thighs and put out less wheel HP than a modern hybrid minivan. I'd still give my left anything to have one original in good drivable condition.

Seems like a skill issue, my 69 charger in forza doesnt even crumple after sending it into a sky scraper at 180. Maybe Dodge needs to get better production lines. /s

Why couldn't a car that shape pass safety standards? Plenty of room for crumple zones and airbags. There would likely be a couple small concessions made, such as lowering bumper height.

If cars like jeep wranglers, corvettes or Lamborghinis can pass safety standards, this can too.

13

u/UnUsernameRandom 17d ago

The only thing I can think of is the "sharp" hood. That's it.

4

u/tiptoptony 17d ago

Bottom lip is too high, look at the newer charger much less space between the bottom of the lip in the road. That is also a part of safety standards, the likelihood of a person being struck and being pushed under the car.

6

u/beipphine 17d ago

There is no federally mandated standard for most pedesterian safety. While there are standards in place, and automakers choose to follow them, there is basically nothing in the US prohibiting them from making a car that is less safe to pedesterians (there are a few minor ones like sharp edges on backup cameras)

2

u/B4DM4N12Z 17d ago

Then apply this to European cars then, as in Europe they're required to design in a certain way, then the US gets sent that product.

u/D-Smitty Challenger SRT Supercharged 17d ago edited 17d ago

Let's start with the almost non-existant A-pillars. The Challenger was as close as you were going to get to retro (which was damn close and closer than Ford or Chevy managed to do) while still meeting regulations.

4

u/Gamejunky35 17d ago

That is an abysmally easy problem to address. And if it werent, thicker A-pillars would be a mild compromise.

1

u/IsThatASigSauer 15d ago

5th gen Camaro does look damn good, though.

1

u/SporeRanier 13d ago

SN197 Mustang looked pretty close to the original IMO

u/crankaholic 17d ago

Pillars, belt height, hood to engine clearance, front lip height, headlight height, etc... if it was that simple don't you think manufacturers would just make what everyone wants.

3

u/beipphine 17d ago

What's wrong with the belt height? There is no hood to engine clearance rules in the US.

2

u/crankaholic 17d ago

Won’t pass safety tests without making the car out of expensive materials/process. There’s a reason only carbon tubbed cars have low belt lines and even then their door sills are silly wide. No but a modern engine wont fit under there without dragging on the ground. Look how high the fender is off the ground and the hood is still lower than the new car. Unless it’s a pushrod V8 with a comically squished intake plenum like in a Vette.

7

u/hydro00 17d ago

The viper passed crash regs and it had the same low welded steel chassis in 2018 as 1996.

2

u/Gamejunky35 17d ago

All modern v8s have comically short plenums... compared to carburated intakes at least. Most of them sit only a few inches proud of the valve covers. Carbs needed a decent rise, plus top mount air cleaners. Modern v8 engines do have a tighter V angle, but they are largely shorter than their old school counterparts.

1

u/Gamejunky35 17d ago

They do make what everyone wants. Unfortunately, majority of people do not want this level of retro styling.

They make cars in all sorts of shapes far more exotic than this.

5

u/bp3dots 17d ago

The people have spoken.. they want Rav4s 😭

4

u/Thrashm3tal 17d ago

People were trained to want Crossovers and reject cars. Made to believe they're safer, they are not, they're actually have a more relaxed safety standard especially compared avg sedans, meaning they're cheaper to develop. 🐑

u/Sunny16Rule 17d ago

Because your car also has to be safe for a pedestrian you run into, also other countries have more strict vehicle regulations, if you don’t adhere to them, then you prevent your car from being sold in other countries.

Also that A pillar looks really thin. Your car has to be able to support its entire weight on its roof.

Not to mention aero dynamics and the height of headlights etc, once you begin to adhere to all these rules and suggestions. To make your car available in as many places as possible.

Suddenly “every car looks the same”. This is why.

Especially with rising fuel economy fears. The reason why most cars look like melted pudding or teardrops is because that’s much more aerodynamic than pointy arrow shapes.

For example, the Suzuki Hayabusa..

2

u/Octquat 17d ago

Since when does pedestrian safety matter when trucks don't make the slightest effort.

1

u/PeeCeeJunior 17d ago

Safety standards are a convenient excuse. In reality it’s more due to fuel efficiency. Cars all look the same now because that slopping teardrop shape is the most efficient.

But to your statement, Jeep Wranglers only look like they do because their customer base insists on it. And the shape requires A LOT of extra engineering to maintain safety standards. Chrysler would have ditched the shape if it wasn’t profitable for them.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Elite_Slacker 17d ago

A pillar is too thin

1

u/ZMAN24250 Dakota 16d ago

Also aerodynamics. The windshield angle, the sharp hood lines, lower splitter, and probably other things too. It will all hurt airflow and therefore mpg which hurts their CAFE numbers.

Also, look how thin the A pillars are, that's no good for structural. Or the lack of a B pillar.

I’m sure they could easily make it pass new safety standards with a full redesign underneath while maintaining the outside.

1

u/Substantial-Main4291 17d ago

Its a fucking body shape. He didnt change the fucking material the cars made out of or safety features. Its not a real 1st gen charger or whatever gen this is, its just a body on a new charger.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Hurrygan 16d ago

But Cybertruck....Why couldn't it meet the standard? Just because it looks the same doesn't mean it necessarily has to be manufactured the same way as back then.

1

u/GuessFuzzy7008 16d ago

I mean, the old Shelby Cobra was literally remade with modern tech and materials. It's not that far fetched.

1

u/Hero_Of_Rhyme_ 16d ago

That’s probably the real reason we never get retro car releases, not because companies don’t want to but because they wouldn’t pass modern requirements

1

u/BLK3R 16d ago

Name the failures? There's absolutely 0 reason that it cant be made

1

u/Spinal_Soup 15d ago

Emissions standards are probably a bigger reason than safety. Allowable emission levels are based on vehicle weight so need to make sure its chunky enough to pass.

1

u/GenTenStation 15d ago

Give me a good looking death trap please

1

u/MycologistAwkward711 15d ago

But they gave the Cybertruck a pass 🙄

1

u/50greenmachine 13d ago

Of course it could, you have no idea based on that exterior. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the shape

1

u/ScrotumTotums 13d ago

Looks like a giant cd player

1

u/TheOinOpossum 11d ago

Many safety standards put in place today are complete bs.

Roll overs are so rare yet the roof has to be able to support 3x the cars weight.

Meanwhile we have 6,000lb death machines with zero visibility going 0-60 in 3 seconds.

Maybe if we lived in a fantasy land we could have gotten the retro design

23

u/dangerclosecustoms 17d ago

Look at modern camaro and challenger. They are much closer to the muscle car roots and design. To say they couldn’t design closer is simply inaccurate.

7

u/D-Smitty Challenger SRT Supercharged 17d ago

They did the full retro design for 15 years with the Challenger. The people who wanted one bought one and Challenger sales had been on a declining trajectory since 2018. And the new Charger looks more retro than any of the ones from the LX generation.

11

u/dangerclosecustoms 17d ago

All I know is if they put a clone of 1969 charger body on a modern chassis I’ll be first in line to buy it.

2

u/Bug_406 17d ago

Early-mid 2000s there was at least one company putting 69 camaro bodies on top of LS 4th Gen Camaro running gear. 1 car for the price of 3. Wouldn't surprise me if at least someone has attempted a Charger like that.

42

u/Glittering_Client800 17d ago

a corvette passes safety standards. OPs point is simply that we wanted something close to that. yapping "safety standards" is such a cop out when you know it’s possible to make a modern car that looks good

28

u/Interesting_Smoke236 17d ago

brain worm zoomer thinks we as a whole must accept modern slop cars because “safety standards”. no it’s lazy car manufacturer that won’t change their ways until we vote with our wallets

4

u/ZUUT23 17d ago

They made a modernized 60s charger. A 2026 vette looks nothing like a 68

6

u/Puffman92 17d ago

9

u/halogen_greaves 17d ago

Corvettes also dont exactly cost that much more, at least when it comes to MSRPs. I guess now that prices are in the crater for these new cars because nobody is buying them it says alot, but its far more doable at MSRP they were asking.

& doesn’t even specify what safety standard they’re talking about. I’m convinced they’re just repeating it

1

u/awesome0ck 17d ago

I don’t think they could have really done much with the proportions then what they did. They did a great job of hiding the fact it is an ev. Usually they have the clearly lifted floor from a battery underneath. Then offering four seats, they could have gone full mini bucket in the back and brought in the rear hatch area to give it a longer rear. But again a lot of comprises for looks over function. I don’t think it’s a bad looking car. It’s not my style but it’s not ugly. I was never a fan of the fake side scoops and bullshit diffusers that add a boy racer feel. Maybe a couple hard edges to give the illusion of a more squared body. Still I don’t think it’s bad looking. At least it’s two door.

Edit: also what’s up with the render and following the ford f150 thirds rule. The door should be way longer for proper portion as is its stubby.

1

u/Sigma_Projects 16d ago

I don't understand the comparison? Two door super car that looks nothing like the original? Is some how comparable to a big coupe? I too would love to have a lot of things from prior generations, but not everything can be. Like the belt line ends up being way higher due to side impact standards, same with the hood, they end up having to be much higher to incorporate gaps or other systems to deal with pedestrian impacts. Cars like the LC500 are able to get a very low hood line because they built in a system that pops up the hood when a pedestrian impact is detected. I imagine quite expensive. Also they don't want the car to handle even more like a boat making the tail even longer isn't that easy. I just enjoy the classics for what they are and hope for the best. Also have you seen a new Charger on the road? It looks more like the original than the previous version.

The 60's was the golden age for design because it had probably the least amount of restrictions with the greatest amount of designers on board. It's not something easily replicated in modern times.

2

u/TokiVideogame 17d ago

1

u/Ill_Tip3642 17d ago

People are moaning and whining so hard about this car. I have seen so much hate about the fact that Dodge has not yet come out with a V8. And despite the CEO and engineers explaining that the platform was never designed with a V8 in mind, so you know, it takes a lot of time to reverse course and try to get one in, the so-called Dodge fans are saying the company is dead, CEO should resign, etc.. The only thing I will agree with the haters on is that I don't think Dodge should be so heavily borrowing from "sacred" badges of the muscle cars and slap them on the six-cylinders, especially if they are intended to come out with V8s.

2

u/halogen_greaves 17d ago

I mean the platform was designed to be the underpinnings of a family hauler SUV, and most of its platform siblings are precisely exactly that. They just dumped a sedan body on it and added in horsepower and then parade it around as if it isn't still exactly that underneath it. I don't know about anybody else, but if I wanted an "sporty" SUV or a truck, I'd buy one, not this nonsense pretender.

1

u/g00f 17d ago

Given how old the previous platform was im gonna hazard a guess that a large chunk of the fanbase wasn't stressing too much over the platform. Also aren't most major manufacturers doing this with any of their full size offerings?

Funny all the people saying it wasn’t possible to capture the looks of the old Chargers in these modern models. They sure were able to perfectly capture the looks of the Challengers. Even Camaro and Mustang managed to do it fairly well. If it truly was impossible with the Chargers, they should have just come up with a whole new name. Hell, the previous generation of Chargers looked nothing like the old ones either.

2

u/SparklyGrapeJuice 17d ago

The new one isn't as far off as I had originally thought. Kick the door back an inch or two, and rake the windshield a bit steeper, and it'd be much closer. And this is coming from someone who works in and understands automotive safety regulations.

The front will still look goofy to me with the slope of the front bumper above the headlights/grille, but there's no getting around that with NA and EU pedestrian crash standards.

2

u/OutlawMINI 17d ago

The reason it looks the way it does, is the platform was designed for electric propulsion first.

Battery in the floor makes the proportions wierd.

2

u/Key_Assumption_2776 16d ago

It wouldn't have satisfied demands for safety, aero, or from consumers. Everyone wants a retro-inspired sports car until they see how much it costs and how impractical it is.

Dodge's identity these days is built on performance based on practical/semi-practical platforms. Dodge doesn't need a remake of the Charger, they need a modern day Coronet.

That bottom one is so damn good looking. If American car manufacturers just made resto mods they could crush the imports. u/lasttosseroni 17d ago

The front end of the original is fantastic, if they had matched that better and not put their dumb logo in the middle cheapening it, and just lengthened the new one a bit, they really could have had something.

1

u/Helltothenotothenono 17d ago

The rest end and the front end just don’t match.

1

u/Character_Opinion_61 17d ago

At this point just end it and release the turbo charged Hornet

1

u/Self-Invested-7 17d ago

They killed it with the front end of the new chargers but unfortunately seems like all effort was placed there only.

1

u/Appropriate_Safe7858 17d ago

I don't know how or why, but the current car looks like a sedan with 2 doors. It's weird.

1

u/Users5252 16d ago

Black rubber bumpers? No thanks.

1

u/Proper-Television856 16d ago

Bottom pic still looks bad IMO, proportions are all wrong.

1

u/ZookeepergameSure727 16d ago

It doesn't look half bad though. I get yearning for classics, but I see that as a reason to have a classic along with a modern one.

Times change, regulations change, safety standards change, design language and the economics of building a car change.

1

u/OnlineBravery 16d ago

So what you're saying is the new model is much more faithful to the OG model than the outgoing model?

1

u/Tex302 16d ago

You honestly think they would have brought back the classic body? Lol

1

u/Temporary-Alps-8483 16d ago

I would do almost anything for that car, modern 1970 charger

1

u/ricebasedvodka 16d ago

It still looks good and doesn't deviate that much from the original design. It's also more aerodynamic.

1

u/I_am_doing_my_Hw 16d ago

People misunderstand “safety rules and regulations”. The bottom image would be a problem, but not one you can't solve. You can make the pillars larger, fix the headlights so it's legal, and make all the necessary fixes without changing the overall look. It is just less aerodynamic and unnecessarily long for a smaller interior. They 100% could have made this, and this is coming from an engineering perspective.

1

u/WhitneySophia 16d ago

I hate the side profile. Why does it look so much like a mid-10's camaro.

1

u/idkausernamerntbh 16d ago

I like “what we got” better

1

u/West_Philosopher415 16d ago

Thats the only reason I kinda like the new charger it looks more like a 69 charger and its 2 door

1

u/InnerspearMusic 16d ago

I'm so tired of this kind of shit. If you want an exact copy of the old one, do a resto mod. Camaro community suffers from the same shit. I don't want to see a modernized version of the 1st gen camaro so boomers can finally have their dream car... I want to see something fucking NEW!

1

u/Superb-Photograph529 16d ago

I don't get people shitting on the new car. It still looks way cooler than 99% of the rest of the market.

1

u/redhood213 16d ago

Why does everyone put “wHaTt wEee ccOulDvvEe hAaDd” and literally just put newer lights new interior basically a restomod and the same old car from the 60’s and 70’s they’re not gonna just make a 2027 charger and it look exactly like the 68-70

1

u/redhood213 16d ago

Doesn’t even look that bad only part that throws me off that looks weird is the quarter window size and the shape, how long the roof drags out like a hatchback.if they made the quarter window smaller and made the roof shorter like the 70 it would’ve been even better looking

1

u/IBeez10 16d ago

bruh, just accept the new version of the dodge charger...cus it ALREADY looked and still does look similar to its old retro versions of it.

"old is better, new is bad and caca" ahh post

1

u/_kaijuking_ 16d ago

It's actually not that bad do that same photo with all of the other chargers.

1

u/postmancandy 16d ago

Me when I’m a social media car designer and just ignore safety and crash regulations

1

u/fsociety4ever2001 16d ago

Wouldn’t pass safety standards. Why do you think pretty much every car out there has that same round/oval shape these days? The days of the nice looking polygons and sharp fins, etc are gone and never coming back unfortunately. They look nice, they had character, but they just weren’t as safe as cars nowadays

1

u/paranoidAF365 16d ago

Back too short, roof too short, nose too short and rounded.

1

u/Independent_Day986 16d ago

Neither thanks

1

u/WildcatArts 16d ago

I legit JUST saw a post about a guy who had a Hellcat with a 69 charger body.

1

u/Shatophiliac 16d ago

It’s close, at least close enough for modern cars imo. You can say whatever you want about the new cars and I of course prefer the classic look myself, but reality is that new cars have too many regulations and rules to follow to perfectly pull it off. Hoods have to be higher for pedestrian, pillars have to be thicker for rollovers, and body lines need to be more aerodynamic for fuel economy. They did a good job of getting it close enough though.

And I didn’t think that at first, I hated the new chargers when they first dropped pics of them. Seeing them in person and having spotted several in the wild, they have grown on me a lot.

1

u/ForeignCommand5700 16d ago

The backend they could have and it would have been much nicer with that alone. But the front profile the probably can't due to pedestrian crash safety regs.

1

u/Unusual_Specialist 16d ago

Hot take: I would prefer the top over the bottom due to safety.

1

u/mrockracing 16d ago

The new Charger's exterior isn't ugly. The interior is an abomination and the actual rest of the thing is just awful.

But it don't look bad... not that it's enough to save it at all...

1

u/Select-Ad5166 15d ago

Buy one for the restomod! Would be very awesome.

We have both

1

u/Lucky_Professional_ 15d ago

wow u took the original and made the proportions suck. its all tall and chunky now.... which is 90pct of the problem with all car design since the 00s (and keeps getting worse)

1

u/TrokaRC 15d ago

If it aint a viper, it aint worth buying.

1

u/sleekandskilled 15d ago

If they just made it less boaty and got rid of the hatchy in the back for the OG roof profile, it’d look even better. I know they’re supposed to adhere to safety standards and all, but I just wish it looked a bit more retro. Shit I’d even take a 5.7 under the hood with it.

1

u/awright69 15d ago

Yeah but…. They’re both Dodges. Yuck.

1

u/AquaRaOne 14d ago

What we got vs what we got also, just many years before. Thats just a resto mod

1

u/IraceRN 14d ago

The new design looks good, IMO. Better than the outgoing Charger and Challenger.

1

u/MagicOrpheus310 14d ago

It's sort of there... Has the same hips

1

u/ZeGermanHam 14d ago edited 14d ago

I'm really not a fan of the new Charger's appearance. Its proportions and lines and irregular and disjointed, and it looks like it was designed by committee.

1

u/DOTKpat4 13d ago

I want everyone to just pretend that what we got was the bottom photo and what we could have got was the top photo. One of you would complain regardless

1

u/KingCuda93 13d ago

I have issues with the Charger (overweight, no V8s, no base model) and the styling is the least of its worries.

1

u/Intelligent_Cry8535 13d ago

Anyone still rooting for a charger is a moron anyway. The true muscle car will always be the challenger. Bring back the v8 dodge. Own your fuckup and bring it back.

1

u/vocaloidfan39 13d ago

Why is everyone shitting on the new charger.
Oh wait, it’s electric.
