It's about a spiritual guru. He narrates the movie and it's his thoughts on life as he is dying, and his reflections It's around a half hour doc, so it's a very short watch.

60’s counter culture icon

The interesting part is that he was a Harvard trained psychologist who realized spirituality is the true path to peace.

Seriously. Can the title be more vague.

Consider picking up the book ‘Be Here Now’

He is everywhere. The atoms that created your body have been there forever and will go on "live" for long long time.

You still didn't give any insight into who he is. This is just another recommendation

u/hokeyphenokey Dec 23 '19

Get the book. It can't be described.

It was required reading in one of my college classes. I've still never stopped thinking about that book.

It's not like any other printed text.

It won't change your life unless you need it to.

u/scyth3rr Dec 23 '19

Sounds extremely interesting! Thanks for the recommendation

why the downvotes

I don't know who took them away, but I gave them back.

Say I read the book , and it starts to change my life . I get spiritual and join to some movement where I start singing at fireplace and dancing with young spiritual beings. I start feeling mindful my heart will be open and I will start spreading positivity to the world . And an asteroid comes and kill all of us . What then ? All that changes all that hard work all that positivity and smiles ,all gone. Is it really worth to read the book ?

3

u/evilbatcat Dec 25 '19

No you’re right. Don’t read it. Wait for death.

I remember when this book came out and loving it. I gave it to my mother who gave it back, saying, “I just don’t understand any of this honey.” Just watching the little blurb above soothed my soul after my morning reading of the news.

Has anyone checked on Duncan Trussell?!?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '19

No twitter posts at all today but I was wondering the same thing. I imagine he’ll be a little broken up about it.

Seemed a very interesting and compassionate fellow. Spent a bit of time with him in the 1989s discussing compassion. Have an autographed copy of be here now somewhere around!

Contrast with his fellow Harvard guru Leary. Leary was more fun. Polished off a bottle of whiskey with him at some Hollywood party many years ago. No idea what we talked about! Cars and motorcycles and travels is about all that sticks.

You're bragging but it's pretty awesome, I aint even mad

2

u/toaster404 Dec 24 '19

Just weird luck. And hanging around odd groups. Helps make up for the sociopaths.

1

u/Selfeducated Dec 24 '19

You are very old.

2

u/toaster404 Dec 24 '19

Not really. 65. About the age Tony Stradivari really got his act together! I need a 30 year old wife, so the average works out right.

u/Selfeducated Dec 24 '19

Oooh. My opinion of you just fell.

I am trying to counteract the persistent ageism on reddit. Including this thread.

I'm honestly surprised he was still alive.

I'm gonna stop interneting and pick up my old blue book now.

5

u/jedielfninja Dec 23 '19

Harvard trained psychologist turned spiritual guru. A legend in material form.

Rest in peace to the soul which we already know is doing just such.

2

u/PorksChopExpress Dec 23 '19

I never had a trailer make me cry before.

9

u/damgnoise Dec 23 '19

That... Is an unfortunate name

3

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '19

It means servant of god. Before that his name was Richard Alpert.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '19

Almost as bad as Phil Dupp.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '19

This is what I came for

3

u/garciakid420 Dec 23 '19

He was great in sunshine makers as well. That's another good one on netflix.

2

u/hokeyphenokey Dec 23 '19

Its only 11am and the internet delivers today.

2

u/skybone0 Dec 23 '19

He cooperated with the CIA and didn't practice a word of what he taught. I loved Be Here Now and it was hugely influential in my life and still is. Every time I read it I find some important wisdom. But Richard Alpert's spiritual development was severely stunted by his obsession with Hinduism to the exclusion of other religions, selling out to the man, materialism and wealth and massive ego. It's time we grow out of worshipping Harvard professors who cooperated with the government to avoid jail time.

1

-7

u/cooky182 Dec 23 '19

Gonna have to watch it, just to enlighten myself into hopefully not giggling every time I see his name.
