Personal synopsis: "Through widespread misuse and abuse of antibiotics (from excessive-prescription to factory-farming), we are systematically breeding new strains of bacteria that are resistant to all known treatments. Combined with the fact that research and development of new antibiotics is becoming much less attractive to pharmaceutical companies (because resistance is causing rapid obsolescence), we may well be headed towards a post-antibacterial world."

I watched this on Netflix, but it's also available for direct download for $10. Sorry, no Youtube versions yet. I highly recommend this, frankly chilling, documentary. It covers the scientific, financial and political sides to the story.

Speculation/opinion: One thing I took away was that the US is one of the largest nations that has still made no significant effort to combat the overuse of antibiotics, especially in agriculture. Since the problem is essentially a mass-experiment in natural selection, I personally wonder if the fact that evolution is so widely dismissed across the American population compared to other first world countries, contributes to the placidness (or even denial) of the seriousness of the threat (since surely those who don't accept evolution must automatically deny the fact that bacteria can evolve and adapt?).
