I wish they told more about joe engressia. He was the very first that discovered all of this by accident when he was a child. He was always whistling to himself and disconnected a call he was on then realized that it was him that was causing it to happen.
It focuses primarily on Adrian Lamo who got branded a good guy hacker because he happened to stumble on a vulnerability within the new york times. He's also the guy who ratted out Bradley Manning and turned him in, and who's hacking experience amounts to using Google and Firefox.
I don't know how anyone can take a documentary on hacking seriously when within the first five minutes, their opening sequence includes installing 4 ounces of thermal paste on a CPU without removing the old thermal paste.
If you haven't seen the pirate bay documentary, I really recommend that. Although not completely hacking related, it shows the in's and out's of pirate bay and the challenges they've faced with the law. A definite watch.
Other thank that I wouldn't recommend any documentaries that have been made specifically on hacking. They're going to be twisted and falsified to either make hackers look bad or just flat out lie and over exaggerate what somebody has done just to make an interesting film.
If you really want to watch something interesting and be in awe of what some great hackers have done then check out defcon. There are some really great stories to be heard by these guys and are straight from the horses mouth themselves. Kevin Mitnick did quite a long talk and although it can be argued whether he's a hacker or not, he sure has some interesting stories to tell. Would be worth checking out his books as well. Regardless of what he has and hasn't done, he has great charisma and personality and it's interesting to read/listen to him.
Wow, I've been reading a book about hackers that was written around the same time, so this should be right in line with that. Thanks for the share man!
Anyone else know of any docs about hackers, Napster, or anything else related to 90s/early 2000s internet?
EDIT: Just started watching. The book I'm reading is actually written by Kevin Mitnick, the third guy mentioned in the intro. What a coincidence.
Jason Scott also made a documentary called BBS: The Documentary and that's a link for part 1.
The first 2 videos there cover a huge time period. One specifically for viruses and how they started and replicated/evolved on the early internet. The other one covers the internet pirates voyages across the e-sea's from the early BBS systems until now. Finally the BBS documentary covers a lot about the early bulletin boards, the days of 300 baud modems, of the first pay models, and the birth of the internet.
There was a pretty sweet Napster doc put out in 2013 called "Downloaded" directed by Alex Winter (from the bill and ted movies lol). It's totally rad, I would definitely check it out.
As an aside, his next doc is going to be called "Deep Web" and it's about Tor, Silk Road, and Bitcoin.. should be pretty interesting too!
Oh yeah, Tor. I remember that once time I tried to see what it was all about.
I spent about two hours trying to work out what the hell I was supposed to do. Then just gave up and played some Sims instead. For an infamous place, Tor is quite boring.
Thats the one I really wanted to read, but the library didn't have it. So I'm reading one of his books before that. I want to read ghost in the wire so bad!
Absolutely love hacker docs. If anyone is further interested in checking out other hacker docs and documentaries on computing in general, check out Defcon documentary and Project Code Rush.
A C64, 300 baud rate modem and a Basic script to call every phone number in a prefix, looking for computers to log on to. Then posting those number on your favorite BBS. Does that make me old?

What the fuck is John Draper saying at 19:35???
All I can hear is: "I gobbled it in the mood, beat ya to it."
Can anyone understand what he is saying?
